The National Museum of Bermuda is inviting students ages 7–18 to enter the seventh annual Grundy Youth Photography Competition, “Through Your Eyes on Bermuda: Our Island Roots,” with winning entries to be exhibited at Commissioner’s House and top prizes including a Canon DSLR camera kit and school award.

A spokesperson said, “The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] is inviting all local students to take part in The Grundy Youth Photography Competition, Through Your Eyes on Bermuda: Our Island Roots. Established in memory of Dr. Reg Grundy, AC, OBE and Joy Chambers Grundy, the photography competition honours their deep passion for Bermuda’s natural and historical environment and supporting local students.

“Now in its seventh year, the competition is open to all Bermuda students ages 7–18, and challenges young photographers to explore and celebrate Bermuda’s cultural and natural heritage. Using a smartphone or digital camera, students are invited to capture one of three themes: Wildlife, Heritage and People.”

“What makes Bermuda feel like home to you? Is it the animals you spot in your backyard, the old buildings you pass every day, or the people who make your world special? This year, we want you to show us Bermuda through your eyes! Grab your camera or phone and capture what makes our Island unique.” states Dr Deborah Atwood, NMB Curator.

A spokesperson added, “Entries will be judged across three age groups: 7–10, 11–14, and 15–18. Students may submit up to one photo per theme, following the technical requirements of JPEG format, 1–50 MB file size, and minimum 300 dpi resolution. In keeping with Dr. Grundy’s signature style, all images must be submitted straight from the camera, with no digital edits or enhancements.

“This year’s judging panel includes Dr. Deborah Atwood, NMB Curator, Chinni Mahadaven, Curator of the Reg Grundy Photographic Libraries along with local photographer Nicola Muirhead.”

NMB Executive Director Elena Strong shared: “We are deeply grateful to the Grundys, whose generosity and vision continue to inspire Bermuda’s young people through this competition. Each year we are amazed by the creativity and talent of our students, who remind us of the importance of seeing the Island through fresh eyes. The competition develops close looking and artistic skills, as well as nurtures curiosity, confidence, and a deeper connection to Bermuda’s cultural and natural environments and a desire to protect it. We can’t wait to see how students capture Bermuda in 2025. I’d also like to thank our committed sponsors Clarien Bank, Pheonix Group of Companies and AF Smiths who provide the prizes since the competition started.”

A spokesperson added, “Winning photographs will be exhibited in Commissioner’s House at the National Museum of Bermuda, featured in MARITimes [NMB’s annual magazine], and published on the NMB and Reg Grundy Wildlife websites.

“Prizes include:

  • Iron Kids accounts from Clarien Bank
  • Gift certificates from Phoenix Stores
  • Best in Show: a Canon DSLR camera kit [camera, lenses, filters, memory card, and case]
  • Plus, the school with the highest percentage of student submissions will win a $1,500 gift certificate from A.F. Smith.

“Submission Deadlines:

  • Ages 11–14: October 30
  • Ages 15–18: October 31

“Submissions must be made online at www.nmb.bm/RG-photo-competition. An award ceremony will take place at the National Museum on Thursday, December 4.”
