Special Olympians To Take Part In End-To-End
A group of Special Olympics Bermuda athletes will take part in the Convex End-to-End charity walk on Saturday [May 2].
Special Olympics Bermuda, sponsored by Athene, are regular participants in the event and will walk from Beacon Hill in Somerset to Dockyard as part of the three-mile Fun Walk.
Some of their athletes will also take part in the Middle-to-End route from Point Pleasant Park.
Chandra-Lee Bascome, the Special Olympics Bermuda director-treasurer, said she expects more than 30 athletes, along with family and friends, to participate.
“Our athletes really enjoy the atmosphere of the event,” Ms Bascome told Bernews.
“We will be wearing our Special Olympics Bermuda training gear – the females have pink shirts with blue writing, and the males have blue shirts with pink writing.
“It makes us easily identifiable. Our support team will be wearing the official End-to-End shirts.”
Ms Bascome said the group’s participation also promotes inclusion and awareness of people with intellectual disabilities.
“We take part in these events so our athletes experience joy, but also so they can be included in what everyone else is doing,” she said.
“It’s also a way for the public to become more aware of us. We don’t focus on our disabilities but on our abilities and what we can do. Our athletes can be involved in almost anything.
The fun walk starts at 2pm and is suitable for families with young children.
Athene is sponsoring the Special Olympics Bermuda team for the fifth consecutive year.
This year’s event will benefit nine local charities. Four organisations will receive grants of $50,000: Coalition for the Protection of Children, Dementia Bermuda, Knowledge Quest Ltd, and SkillCraft Bermuda.
Five additional charities – Care Learning Centre, It Takes a Village, Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association, Performance Pathways, and Future Leaders Bermuda – will each receive $10,000.
