Special Olympics On End-To-End Experience
Special Olympics Bermuda athletes were took part in the Convex End-to-End last weekend, joining walkers, runners and cyclists in the island-wide charity fundraiser.
The 39th annual event drew thousands of participants across Bermuda as the community turned out in support of nine local charities.
Special Olympics Bermuda, sponsored by Athene, took part in the three-mile Fun Walk from Beacon Hill in Somerset to Dockyard, while some athletes also joined the Middle-to-End route from Point Pleasant Park.
More than 30 athletes, along with family, friends and coaches participated, with the group using the event to promote inclusion and public awareness of people with intellectual disabilities.
For Special Olympics Bermuda, participation in the event was about more than reaching the finish line.
Their presence underscored the organisation’s message of inclusion and ability, while also giving athletes the chance to share in one of the island’s best-known community traditions.
As the event concluded in Dockyard, the athletes’ involvement added to the day’s broader show of unity and support for charitable causes.“All our athletes were very excited awaiting the arrival of the Convex End-to-End.
Chandra-Lee Bascome, the Special Olympics Bermuda director-treasurer, told Bernews: “It’s always a good when we come together from our different training programmes. Its like old friends catching up.
“National director, Karen Woollery, mentioned that she is always in awe of how the spectators respond to us passing them by.
“Lots of applause, laughter and high fives. And the joy shines through on the beaming faces of our athletes.
“I always have to think that no matter how many challenges we encounter to make things happen for them, the reward of the internal emotions outshines it all.”
