BCHC Earns Full Mammography Accreditation
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre announced that its mammography services have achieved a significant milestone, with both mammography units now accredited by the Canadian Association of Radiologists’ Mammography Accreditation Program [CAR-MAP].
A spokesperson said, “This follows the re-accreditation of the Centre’s established mammography service in 2025 and now extends to its newer mammography unit, confirming that all mammography services at the Centre meet rigorous international standards for quality and safety.
“The CAR-MAP programme is a nationally recognised quality assurance framework designed to ensure excellence in mammography. Established in 1994, it sets benchmarks across equipment performance, image quality, staff qualifications, and quality assurance processes, grounded in internationally recognised best practices.
“For Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, this dual accreditation reflects not a single point in time, but a consistent and deliberate commitment to maintaining a high standard of care across the entire breast imaging pathway.”
“Accreditation is an important external validation of the care we provide every day,” said Dr Paul Risk, DI Clinical Director, Radiologist and Breast Specialist at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. “It means that every patient coming through our doors can be confident that their mammogram is being performed, interpreted and supported to the highest standards.”
The spokesperson said, “The Centre has long played a leading role in breast imaging in Bermuda, introducing digital mammography in 2008 and 3D mammography in 2017. Today, its fully accredited service is supported by two state-of-the-art mammography units, enabling both screening and diagnostic imaging within a structured, accessible pathway.
“Mammography remains the gold standard for the early detection of breast cancer. Early detection not only improves outcomes but also expands treatment options and reduces the need for more intensive interventions.
“At Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, this is supported by a coordinated breast care pathway. Should an abnormality be identified, follow-on imaging and biopsy procedures can be arranged within days, with specialist consultation available on island.
“Importantly, access to this level of care is not determined by a patient’s ability to pay. Through the Centre’s Equal Access Fund, supported by corporate and community donations, breast services [mammography, ultrasound and biopsy] are provided with no co pay, ensuring that anyone who needs screening or diagnostic imaging can access it.
“This approach reflects a broader commitment to reducing barriers to care and encouraging individuals to come forward earlier, before symptoms progress or concerns become urgent.
“Alongside clinical services, the Centre continues to invest in education and awareness, including its ‘Know Your Lemons’ breast health programme, helping individuals better understand the signs and importance of early detection.
“With both mammography units now accredited under CAR-MAP, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre continues to strengthen a breast imaging service that is not only high-quality, but also accessible, responsive, and grounded in the needs of the community it serves.
