Five Students Earn France Scholarship
Five Bermuda students – Maya Bean, Alexandria Crippen, Naomi Crofton, April Cherry and Ava Moorghen – have earned the opportunity to travel to France this summer after winning L’Alliance Française des Bermudes’ annual French Scholarship Competition.
A spokesperson said, “L’Alliance Française des Bermudes offers students the opportunity to travel to France for a three-week educational trip through its annual French Scholarship Competition. Open to students studying French in Bermuda, ages 15 to 17, the program has been sponsored by the Christian Humann Foundation since its inception in 2001.
“This year’s winners are Maya Bean from CedarBridge Academy, Alexandria Crippen from The Berkeley Institute, Naomi Crofton and April Cherry from Somersfield Academy, and Ava Moorghen from Mount Saint Agnes Academy [MSA].”
“Our charity was founded 60 years ago to promote the French language and culture. Our annual competition has been very popular and is becoming our most important charitable endeavor, with more than 120 students having participated so far,” explains Frédérique Compain Nappée, president of L’Alliance Française des Bermudes.

A spokesperson added, “For many of the students, this experience is transformative and helps guide them in their future studies and careers. The trip gives them an opportunity to grow personally and expand their horizons, in an environment that fosters friendships across schools, cultures, and borders.
“After spending three weeks in Cannes, the students will enjoy an additional three-day stay in Paris before returning to Bermuda just before Cup Match. This cultural tour of Paris was made possible through the generous offer of one of L’Alliance’s members, a dedicated teacher who volunteered to be their guide.”
Frédérique Compain Nappée continues, “All of our educational programs are managed by our dedicated team of volunteers. It is rewarding to see such support from our entire community. In addition to the French Scholarship Competition for our teenagers, L’Alliance Française des Bermudes also offers the option for French and Francophone families to enroll their children, from age 4, in our Saturday French classes – a program also run entirely by our volunteers.”
A spokesperson added, “L’Alliance’s members come from the Francophonie all around the world, as well as many Bermudians who love to join in for an evening of pétanque, wine tasting, or the monthly French film night.”
