May 24th Float To Honour Murder Victims

May 23, 2011

The newly formed ‘Stand Up Bermuda’ group has been hard at work over the past few days preparing their float for tomorrow’s Bermuda Day Parade. Over this past weekend members of the group met up at Sousa’s Landscaping in the Camp Hill area to work on the float, which will contain the name of all the murder victims over the past few years.

Members of Stand Up Bermuda, as well as friends and families of murder victims will walk with the float. In addition, Ralph Burrows – who was paralyzed as a result of a shooting five months ago – also intends to come out and participate..

The group also hopes the float will help to promote the upcoming ‘Stand Up For Change Peace Rally‘ on June 26th. The evetn will see two groups marching from both Dockyard and St.George’s starting from 12 noon. The march will end at City Hall, where the group will be addressing the Government, listening to motivational speakers as well as anti-violence themed music from local artists.

The newly formed organisation seeks to work in a community based manner to help stem the rising crime. Members of the committee include Jahma Gibbons, Gaynell Hayward, Jeff Sousa, Shawnette Sommer, Ray Charlton, Deb Lewnondowski, Juanita Leshore, Channing Seymour, Alexis Swan, Antonio Belvedere, and Scott Smith.

Jahma Gibbons, one of the Stand Up Bermuda organisers, previously spoke on the group’s formation saying, “The reason for it is to unite Bermuda as a whole. We want to get every charity group, business, and church to come out and stand up for Bermuda, as we feel that will be the only way to stop the violence thats going on in our island.”
