Three Arrests After US/Bermuda Investigation

June 2, 2011

[Updated] Following a joint investigation between both Bermuda and U.S. agencies, three men were arrested yesterday afternoon [June 1] for offences relating to the importation of a significant quantity of controlled drugs.

In addition, what the Police term a “substantial sum of cash” was recovered. The arrests came after a prolonged investigation by both the Bermuda Police and U.S. law enforcement. Bernews unofficially understands the alleged incidents that are under investigation may have included airline employees both here and overseas.

A Police spokesman said, “Around 4:00p.m. on Wednesday 1st June, 2011 a combined H.M. Customs and Bermuda Police Service team arrested three men in the Shelly Bay, Hamilton Parish area for offences relating to the importation of a significant quantity of controlled drugs.”

“The arrests were the result of a prolonged investigative effort with partner agencies in the United States. At the time of the arrests, a number of evidential items were seized, including a substantial sum of cash.”

“The three persons arrested remain in custody while the investigation continues.”

Update: A statement from the U.S. Consulate said, “On June 1, 2011, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)/Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), DEA, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS), HM Customs and US Airways Security successfully dismantled an organization that exploited commercial aircraft to smuggle narcotics into Bermuda from the United States via Philadelphia International Airport.”

This coordinated investigation identified corrupt current and former airport/airline employees in the U.S. and Bermuda who utilized their positions to circumvent airport security and federal inspection procedures to smuggle narcotics.

ICE/HSI has and will continue to utilize its broad investigative authority to target those individuals that pose direct threats to our communities both in the U.S. and abroad.

U.S. Consul General Grace Shelton said, “Law enforcement is an area of excellent cooperation between the United States and Bermuda. Bilateral collaboration between allies can yield strong results, and I am pleased that working together we have been able to shut down this smuggling operations.”

    • W.T.F.??? says:

26yr old black male is thinking like a 26 yr old black male

      • Me says:

And what’s that supposed to mean? What are you trying to insinuate about young black men?

        • James says:

He is trying to insinuate that some young black 26 year old boys (quite a few these days) are not using the organ that is on top of their shoulders and are making very stupid decisions and then trying to escape the consequences of those decisions! I’m not insinuating it, I’m actually saying it!

By the way I was once a young black 26 year old boy myself but I decided to actually use the largest organ in my body to “DO” something with my life!!

          • Me says:

And SOME 26 year old black males, as well as SOME in all other races do not make wise use the organ on top of their shoulders. However, this comment did not say SOME, it said 26 year old black males, which gives the impression that it is a blanket statement about all young black men. Had WTF made the distinction between SOME and ALL, I would not have had a problem with his comment.

Also, how are you saying quite a few these days? Yes, it’s true, too many young people in general are choosing not to channel their abilities in a positive way. However, instead of criticizing the small number of black males that are making poor decisions, why not praise the thousands that like you, have made use of the skills they have and are DOING something?

            • Think about it says:

Because it isn’t a small number of black males making poor decisions, it is a high number of black males. I don’t get why people get so outraged when people speak the truth. All I see are black males making stupid choices, black males on the news for murder or for theft or for drug smuggling. If it were mostly white men, then I would say it too, but it’s not. It really isn’t. For every 1 white or Portuguese male that gets caught up for these things there are probly 100 black men that get caught up

              • Ganja mon says:

Closet racist!! First of all There are more black people on the Island. So if you look at 26 year old people across the population of all races, Theres probably 70% black people in that age category. Majority of these 70% are on the borderline of Poverty, Unlike the white/Portuguese people that are more wealthy and dont have to take part in street organizations or criminal acts to make money.

People like you are part of the problem in Bermuda and why Black people, The “majority” wont vote for the UBP/ OBA. Because you friggin white people still have a racist attitude. SMFH @Think about it..

                • Think about it says:

                  @ Ganja mon

                  Ummmmmm, I’m not white Lol.

I have specified that numerous times on Bernews that I am not white. It doesn’t matter if 70% of men in that age range are black, it doesn’t mean that 70% has to be ignorant and do ignorant and ghetto things.

And where are you getting your facts (or lack of facts) from? I know that most whites in Bermuda come from money, but I know a lot of Portuguese that are on or near the poverty line.

Cry me a frigging river. My black mama and her black family came up with nothing, and guess what? They didn’t grow up to be like the youth are now. They got their education and got good jobs, and weren’t lazy.

                  • Ganja mon says:

Your lying !! You say your black..Your probably a Uncle Tom! Grew up around white people, went private school. You know nothing of the street or its lifestyle. You probably live Southampton on South shore road or Some where on the South-side of the Island. If you are black (which i doubt) you dont want to be black.

                    • Think about it says:

                      I am black ass.

I went to Dellwood primay, clearwater and Cedarbridge. I grew up in Tills Hill (court street) and Hamilton Parish.

Also, black people live in Southampton fool, the island is only 21 square miles, black people live everywhere. Now if you were smart with your attempts to disprove my blackness, then you should have said, “I bet you grew up in fairylands, or tuckers town.” But I guess you’re too stupid to even know where wealthy people live in Bermuda.

                      Dummy.

                    • Let's Think About This... says:

So let me get this straight. Because one person refuses to use their race as an excuse for their behavior, they aren’t really black? They must have come from the privileged “black” people that assimilated into the “white” world and were allowed in because they didn’t act black and lived in the privileged areas (aka Sptn, South Shore, Paget East, or Hamilton Parish) of a predominately black country? Oh and they’re light-skinned with loosely curled hair as well. Are you serious?! Do I get to be a true black person for living up Khyber Pass, White Hill, Ord Road (Paget West), and West Side Road? Do I get black points because my parents came from Somerset and Camphill? Nah, the points probably got negated because I went to a (predominately black) private school. I lived up Collector’s Hill. And I can speak like a white person aka grammatically correct English. I’ve always had a roof over my head even though my family has been threatened with eviction…my parents are still together…I don’t have to watch my back and neither does my brother nor father…they haven’t been arrested for “being black”…have no idea of life on Bermuda’s hard streets…yup, I’m definitely not black.

Stop using your race as an excuse. We live in Bermuda for crissake, not Haiti or Atlanta or Cuba or Compton or the Bronx or any other truly hard country/city/neighborhood. Yes, life is hard, but get used to it. You don’t automatically get a harder life just because you’re black. Yes, you can be born into hard situations, but that’s no excuse to stay like that. You don’t have to work the streets, you choose to. I don’t care what your parents/neighbors told you about all you’re ever going to be. Pull yourself up, be an adult like you claim you are, and stop blaming fate for your situation.

And “26 yr old black male” asked for race comments when he identified himself as black then made a comment like he did. Not all 26 yr old black males sound like him. Thank God for that. I am 200% behind every 26 yr old black male that has made a good name for himself and handled his responsibilities. Well done for overcoming the “damming fate” of being black.

                    • Global Citizen says:

So sad that EVERY discussion people have on here LEADS BACK TO RACE … Bermuda you have some issues to iron out … 2011 is waiting for you to CATCH UP!

                  • J says:

@Think about it: you are so educated that you are stupid… I in no way condone criminal acts, but believe it or not, YOU and everyone else is only a product of their environment. These environments produce positive and negative results–some produce more good than bad and vice versa. In your eyes you are one of the “good results”. Congrats. But if an equation is intended to produce a negative result, and you want positive results, then the equation itself needs to change.

What are the results of this equation:
1 black male minus a father
                    Minus money
Plus the high cost of living
Plus society’s perception that I have already done something wrong
Minus a sophisticated education system where 30% is a pass
                    Minus opportunity
                    (potentially) Equals?

This is the equation that society has offered several people.

There is another equation that eliminates most if not all of the negative variables above… then you ask them to choose an equation to live by…

                    • Think about it says:

                      @J

Everything you listed above is just an excuse that “back males” use to either explain why they can’t succeed or why they turned to a life of crime. “Black males” all over the world have it 10 times worse then ANY black male in Bermuda. I am willing to put money on that. If they just sucked it up and got a job, any job, and worked their way up, they would be fine. But Bermudians have this idea that they should automatically start at a high paying position, which is lazy. Hence the stereotype.

I didn’t have much growing up, when I wanted something, I had to go out and work for it.

                • Think about it says:

Also, to address your comment, “Unlike the white/Portuguese people that are more wealthy and dont have to take part in street organizations or criminal acts to make money.”- Are you serious? No one has to take part in criminal activity to make money, NO ONE. These “young black men” do it because it is fast money and they are lazy. That is the ONLY reason.

p.s. How do you expect me to take you seriously when your screen name is “Ganja mon?” I bet you think the government failed you too, and that the white man wont give you a break. smh.

                  • Ganja mon says:

No actually! Im quite alright & my screen name is Ganja mon because im not brainwashed to think Weed is bad for you and I support it 110%.

The government almost failed me if it wasnt for my parents. I went CBA when the passing % was 30%. I didnt finish high school but still went abroad and graduated. It was hard as hell to get a job and after waiting 8 months finally started to work. So your assumption of me falling into that category you obv. hate so much is WRONG !

“ps” – IDC if you dont take me serious, at least i know you ignorant ass read my comments..& I think you hate to look in the mirror. Especially if you black like you claim..

                      LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I never said you failed idiot, I said you think the government failed you and that the white man was keeping you down. And guess what dummy? YOU PROVED ME RIGHT! LOL

The government almost failed you? You didn’t finish CBA when the passing % was 30%?! Then you really are stupid. How can you have an excuse for failing high school when that is the passing mark, seriously?

I also went to CBA, and it’s not the best school, but it’s not bad either IF you do your work like you’re supposed to.

Your the Dumb one! I bet I’m mor educated then you! You think because your a COP your smart? And what you didnt understand when I said the graduating percentage was 30%. Meaning if 100 people was in s4, 30 people would graduate. Your too dumb for basic maths.

                    • Anyone says:

                      @ Ganja mon

You did not specify what you meant in your comment, so how am I dumb? Lol

If if you meant the GRADUTATION RATE was 30%, what is your excuse for not graduating? You still don’t sound smart at all, so please stop talking.

what do you mean lol you don’t know if that person was white or black so okay they used a poor chose of words now look at you and what you just wrote look in the mirror homie I am sick of people trying to justify these guys street crime with being poor before the hard times hit there where job out there and those same guys had chance to get jobs. during that time the where singing the same song (no job out der) but yet when they get caught and have to go court they seem to find jobs so they can trick the judge into letting them go cause “Your honor I just started a new job cause I am trying to change my life and stay off the streets” lol

                • confused says:

Race has nothing to do with social class these days. Historically yes, white equaled wealth but now not so much. I am white, went to public school for the majority of my life, luckly had 2 paresnts that where willing to take second jobs and send me to private school, got the degrees, got the diplomas and you know what, still struggling. Life is hard, white, black or other and yes, the wealth devide in bermuda is crazy but trust ne, there are as many wealthy blacks now as whites and as many poor white bermudians as black bermudians and with that i stress and put emphasis on bermudians. The CEO of an insurance company who is white and “foreign” does not equal white bermudian! We as Bermudians are becoming poor, not just financially but ethically and morally! Its a struggle. What we need to do is unite and bring this amazing island with so much potential up and stop being dictated to by a messed up government and a messed up church sect! Bless up bermy and all bermudians, we are onions and we are a rare breed, now lets make off aboyut it (as we like to do) and garner some interest in some of the most unique, loving and REAL people around.

            • James says:

Hey Me, even most of the young black males that aren’t breaking the law, just going through life, are NOT making the best decisions for themselves. This is true because I SEE them, I hear them, and I work with them! The aspects of life that should be important to them (even at 20-30 years old) are just NOT important, hence they find themselves where the DO NOT want to be.

Nobody wasted more time, more money, and drank more than I did when I was in that age group. But here is what I did eventually, I grew up!! I realized that I needed to work hard when I was younger so that I can have what I wanted in these years I find myself in, and it works out pretty well.

I have no problem praising the thousands who are doing well, but you know what they KNOW they are doing well so they actually praise themselves. And that is the best type of praise.

My point here is to make my fellow young black males take a honest look at themselves, kick themselves in the butt, and change their circumstances. Help is available to those who help themselves. If we help to change the mindset of most young black males we will have even less of the “small number of black males” that are doing really stupid and breaking the law these days.

Just an opinion from a once young black male who awakened one day a long time ago. A lot of our black males are still asleep in their momas beds, time to wake up guys!!

              • Me says:

Hey James, you hit the nail on the head! You are right, too many are making poor choices; but there are sevearal that are making excellent choices! My problem was simple: I did not appreciate WTF’s comment because of the wording which gives the impression of a blanket statement that insults all young black males. From reading your last comment, it sounds like we are on the same page. My passion is young people and I have been working to help them for over 15 years, full time and part time, and with lots of personal sacrifice! Many young people need to wake up and do what is needed to get ahead, but there are also several who are doing just that.

                • James says:

Ok, it seems we are on the same page.

I’d like to help them as well, as long as they want to help themselves. But I’m not the coddling type, I’m going to go the tough love path and tell it like it is. Problem is, young people will probably perceive this as disrespectful, but its not. Its the TRUTH, and sometimes we ALL have to face the TRUTH and deal with it.

          • J says:

            i am a 26yr black male too…
@James (former 26 yr old black male): first of all, the largest organ on your body is your skin. I don’t know how you are using your skin to “DO” something with your life (unless your doing Neutrogena commercials), but good luck with that…

And for all you other ignorant people who apparently believe that all young black males are up to no good, thank you for confirming what I thought your thoughts are when you look at me.

Yay! A new dummy to take on.

                    Ok dummy, pay attention.

You see all these young black men and women who are getting into trouble with the law, or not doing anything with their lives? How old would you say they are. Between 17 and 25 years of age? Ok So when you factor in the PLP’s 13 years of being in power, those youth were between 4 and 12 years old. Now I strongly believe that between those ages are some of the most important in a childs development.

So with that being said, you mean to tell me the PLP still can’t be blamed? I don’t see any black folks that grew up in the pre PLP years acting like this, I wonder why?

                    • Ganja mon says:

Your the only dummy! You said to one person their a Kool-aid drinker? Only a racist white person would say that.

Like I said before! (if you black) You are a mutt, and hate the black side of youself..

                    • Think about it says:

                      @Ganja mon

                      Woooooooooow!!!!

Do you not know that kool-aid drinker is a term used to insult PLP supporters right? Do you even know why they say kool-aid drinkers? It has nothing to do with race dummy. It is based of of how cult leaders will have their followers drink spiked punch so that they can ascend to their made up fantasy land. The followers believe their leader so blindly that they never question him/her and do whatever they are told (like the PLP and their supporters)

                      See, I just educated you.

                • Me says:

If someone calls me ignorant, I will reply and let them know that they are the ones who are ignorant.

The silly PLP, kool-aid drinker got upset I was talking about his failure of a party and started calling me names. I don’t get how they can still support a party who seem to do everything in their power to fail.

So the packages come through and there are more addicts on the island. There are more people broke because they just can’t get enough of their controlled substance. There are more break-ins because these broke addicts need money or some other good they could have had if the packages did not come through. There are more crimes because the drug dealers cannot get money from broke addicts. Government has to implement more programs to subsidize these broke addicts because the package came through. More police are need because the package came through.

That is just a few of the basics ripple effects of the package coming through. These packages might support some but they do have a bad effect on the nation as a whole. Stop the packages, sober up! Look for a place for Bermuda in the future for the future!

British Columbia, Canada, makes over 2 billion dollars per year from the marijuana trade and its not even legal. They have also seen significant drops in pot related crime. Bermuda could be the amsterdam of the east coast and the government could cash in and not only make revenue, but increase tourist spending, hotel occupancy and increased jobs. Its a win win. Look at Portugal, they turned all narcotics to class c drugs, laxed the laws and in turn made alot of dough for the government, got rid of a large amount of organized crime (gangs), increased the employment market and invested more in social programs. Sure the church groups won’t like this comment but at the end of the day its gods seed and it is the only narcotic that is 100% natural, no additives, no bs. The only reason hemp/cannabis was outlawed was because the governments could not figure out how to tax something u can grow in your garden. LEGALIZE IT, MAKE MONEY, LETS GO!

another stupid 26 year old black male

    • Me says:

No need to insult him. He just expressing a simple fact about supply and demand, when the supply is low, the price goes up and causes more problems. Our gang and drug problems have many more factors than just this, but it is a factor.

  8. Bryan says:

Percival sums up the mindset of Bermuda’s power brokers instead of engaging with the youth and trying to understand how they think etc… they denigrate the youth. No wonder youth man bussin shot….they are not being heard. Like Tupac said ” Nobody notices a n%$ga/( young black man ) unless he’s clutchin on a 45″. Mediate dat!

    • Malachi says:

What’s with the references to Tupac like he was some sort of black hero? From what I can remember, he was a thug. Same thing with that “Snoop Dogg” moron.
Why do us blacks denigrate ourselves by gloryfying people who are the scum of the earth?

      • Notorious says:

Oh shut up. He’s done more for blacks than you ever have I bet that.

      • Dude says:

Denigrate – From Latin dénigrātus, the past participle of dénigrāre (“to blacken”) from dē + nigrare ‘to blacken (< niger (“black”))

Because Tupac was a contemporary representative of the struggle for equality that was proudly fought by our forfathers*~

Because he chose to fight that struggle through the highly regarded and deeply rooted art form of spoken word and poetry*~

For a lot of reasons, quite frankly… you choose your heroes based on the good they have done, despite the fact that they have also done bad…

        So can we*~

        • Think about it says:

End the end of the day, he still was a thug that did drugs, got in fights and just did everything that a hooligan does. It is stupid for black men to look up to him. They might as well look up to Ol’ Dirty B@stard.

          • bermy guy says:

i guess we mite as all well look up to someone like Dr. Ewart brown who had an education but yet look at his business practices yeah he was much better the a tupac or snoop dogg

Find the nearest roof and jump …Think about it

      • J says:

Tupac was a legend, an activist and a thinker: I suggest you watch any interview of this man. You only “think” he is a thug because that’s how the media portrays any young black male who is seeking to shake things up. Do some research before you regurgitate what the TV has programmed you to think and say.

        • Think about it says:

          @ J

How about you shut your mouth before and stop assuming I don’t do my research. Only asses assume, are you an ass?

I have seen every documentary about Tupac that is available. I have read about him and seen tv interviews. I even listen to his music and have a few favorites. But guess what? That doesn’t change the fact that he was a thug. I can look at, hold, and smell an apple all day, and at the end of the day, no matter what anyone tells me, I know it is an apple.

If you think that hanging out with thugs, carry weapons, drinking and doing drugs, flipping off and swearing at the media isn’t “Thug” behaviour, then you are an idiot.

The man had “Thug Life” tattooed on his stomach for Sh*t sake

          • Notorious says:

Yeah he actually admitted he was a thug….

            • Ganja mon says:

THUG LIFE means – The Hate you Gave!

If you dont understand what he means by that. It is the Hate the White man gave Black Americans. They had a plan for us to hate each other. They took us from Africa, raided villages and stuck em on a boat. Took them to Plantations to work, raping women and children, destroying the Black families 200 yrs ago and their still doing it today. They ended Slavery, stuck them in Ghetto’s and left them poor, knowing full well that we will keep a primitive mentality that will take another 200 yrs to realize we were tricked.

You white people dont know what you done which has crippled our race. Now you think because shit is supposed to be equal it is? Only 40 years ago we were fighting for equal rights. The shit still aint equal !! F*ck you stupid ignorant white people !! You think after 40 years we going to be playing on an even playing field..Its ignorant !!

              • Think about it says:

                @ Ganja mon

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do some research before running your big, stupid mouth.

Blacks were not the only race to be enslaved, they weren’t even the first. Almost every race on the face of this planet has experienced slavery, either being the slave or the slave master. Almost every race has had to deal with atrocities toward their people. Did you know that the Portuguese were some of the first slave owners? They enslaved Africans as well as their poor Portuguese brothers and sisters.

And why are you talking about African slavery and history like Bermudians went through that? What happened to Africans 200 years ago does not excuse the youth of today? How much time do you need? Would you like a millennium to sort yourselves out?

                • Ganja mon says:

You are not black ! Your a brainwashed mutt! We just won equal rights 40 years ago a$$ and its still not equal..You only understand what you want to comprehend.

                  • Think about it says:

Wow Ganja mon, you have reached new heights of stupidity. How do black people IN BERMUDA not have equal rights? The WOMAN who runs the country is BLACK dummy! Most of the real estate in Bermuda is owned by who? Black people. Most of the businesses (other than international) are owned and operated by who? Black people. How can people say that black people don’t have equal rights here? It is mind boggling to me. Did you just copy and paste your argument from an American civil rights website or something?

How can a country that is majority black, not have equal rights for black people?

Just shut our mouth because your stupidity is giving me a headache.

p.s. Weed kills your brain, I don’t care what you say, it has been proven to destroy brain cells. Just like alcohol

Big Contruction Companies: D&G, Island Construction, – this avenue is on lock by Portugues.

                      Landscaping too?

The only person who can sell milk is Dunkley.
                      You have Barrit selling Water.
                      Gosling Selling Rum.

These are all white Markets. No black business owners in these markets because they been in control of the Island economy for a real long time.

You to asinine to know anything !

I bet you can even name a Black owned Business in these IMPORTANT fields. YOU ARE BRAINWASHED. REALIZE THAT

So what’s stopping you or any other Black Bermudian from starting your own enterprises within these industries?

@Ganja mon. Do you only understand what you want to comprehend? What are you doing for yourself legally to better your chances to even the playing field in your favor? College? Are you planning to open your own business so that you only have to work for yourself and not answer to anybody else? We can’t keep blaming others when we are doing nothing to better ourselves. When we can’t talk without flinging insults it just shows what kind of cloth we were cut from! Could you imagine Johnny Barnes cursing someone out? Let me give you a quote. “A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” (Charles Darwin) So while you’re maybe sitting on wall drinking, smoking and selling drugs without really making a worth while difference in your life, you are wasting your life crying about the white man. Your elders at least in America or wherever fought and died to help give you the little bit of extra freedom you take for granted. If you think you have it bad now I gaurantee you would not like to go back 40 or 50 years and have it like they had it.

                    • Ganja mon says:

You got me all wrong buddy..NO, im not sitting on a wall drinking, smoking and selling drugs without really making a worth while difference in your life (WOW, great assumption)..

Actually, IM AT WORK, doing things in my life. I’ve graduated college already (thank U)! Working with a white guy who has less education then me, and he makes more money..That equality for your ass!

So before you go ASSuming Im some piece of shit not doing anything and because I have Ganja mon as a username that Im worthless, read other posts.

Im not blaming others, I just hate when people say things and know nothing. I’ve written 20 posts on here obv. read one and decided to add your 2 cents. Someone once said, “Read before you write, its much like Walking before you run.” (ME)

                    • Think about it says:

Dont waste your time, Ganja mon is clearly not intelligent enough to understand what I am saying to him. The fool names major businesses in Bermuda, when I was talking about businesses in general. There are a lot of black owned stores and businesses in Bermuda, but all he can see is Dunkley’s and and D&G. smh.

                    • Think about it says:

                      @Ganja mon

What do you do? What was your major in college? Has this white man you mention been there longer than you? Does he have more experience? Becuase you know these things will determine why some people get paid more than others.

Or did you expect to be fresh out of school and get paid the same as people who have been working in that field for years before your arrival?

Only you can change your miserable situation. Who wants to do business with an angry black man. I bet you would be the rudest business owner. You went to college so act like it. Ganja mon is clearly lying. How do you work as a computer software engineer with a bachelor’s of science? I really don’t think you have the job you say you do. If I was an employer I wouldn’t hire you simply for the fact that you cannot speak proper english.

Also, if you are “getting paid,” then why complain about the white man getting paid more? Lol

                    • SOMERSET OG says:

@Ganja’s reply below! Now I will fling insults. You are an angry little man. I’m in America now driving an Audi Q7 with a house and a driveway to park it in, in a nice neighborhood. I spell better than you. I speak better than you and smell better than you with your ganja dragon breath. “Trust me, You are have NOTHING OVER ME !!” YOU…ARE… HAVE… NOTHING…OVER…ME???? I definitely have better grammar over you! Cheese and rice! We all make mistakes but from reading your posts you always make mistakes. If you are getting paid why are you so angry?

          • J says:

And what good do you speak of? Winning a grammy or making a lot of money?

Or are you talking about the foundation that his MOTHER started after he died? He probly did more in death than when he was alive

              • J says:

Tupac was asked what his goal is in life and his music. He said “for people to think”. Here’s some quotes: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Tupac_Shakur

It’s not going to stop until “we” stop it. And it’s not just white man that’s doing this to Brenda. It’s not just white man that’s keeping us trapped. It’s “black.” And we have to find the new African in everybody… But before we can be African, we gotta be black first.

What I want you to take seriously is what we have to do for the youth.

It’s not just about you taking care of “your” child. It’s about you taking care of these children.

It’s not like I idolize this one guy Machiavelli. I idolize that type of thinking where you do whatever’s gonna make you achieve your goal.

You have to work from one point to go to another. So I admire work ethic, I think it should be re-inforced through out our neigbourhoods, that everybody should work hard, practice makes perfect, you have to be diligent with what you want, you have to apply your self, you have to motivate your self. You have to do for-self by your self, and then you can do things for other people. But that’s what I had to do, I had to do for-self.

I don’t feel like what I did was so evil, I just feel like the way I was living and my mentality was a part of my progression to be a man.

                Sounds like a thug init?

                • Think about it says:

Are you serious? So he wanted to help black people progress by acting like a thug?

                  Sounds stupid to me.

          • J says:

and so, in your eyes, a thug can’t change right?? Once a thug, always a thug?? I used to live that life because I didn’t know any better. But I have changed. But according to you, I can’t. I hope I don’t find out who you are and you end up in jail or something. Because you are talking as if you have perfected being a human… like you have done nothing wrong in your entire life.

And go ahead and call me an ass kid.

But I’m not… I am educated and I’m going down a path of success right now, and you and everyone else who thinks like you wants to see me fail just so you can say “I told you so”.

            • Think about it says:

No dummy, I like people like you, you aren’t making an excuse. You are going out and getting an education and seeking a better life for yourself.

The same cannot be said for OUR peers. I’m not perfect, I never said I was. I ran is some of those circles when I was younger, but like you, I sought to better myself. I now work in law enforcement, and I can promise you I will not be going to jail unless they start sentencing people for parking tickets Lol.

A thug can change his was, but come on. The guy was what, in his mid to late 20′s when he died? How much time did he need to change? Late 30′s, early 40′s? I knew at 19, 20 years old that I could not be doing this forever. So what excuse do “26 year old black men” have?

              • Ganja mon says:

oh that comfirms it for me! Your the POLICE.. NO wonder you talk like you do. Anyone can be a COP, it take no skill or knowledge! They teach you everything they want you to know. Just like a dog! You think your high and almighty already, I know you were picked on as a youth and chose that route to make yourself feel big and bad. But deep down, your only friends are Police or the private school people you went Warwick Acedemy with..

Now I see why you talk the way you do..

                • Think about it says:

                  LMAOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I am not a cop ass. I said law enforcement. Do you not know what law enforcement can be? Do you not know the definition? And even if I was, how does being a cop not take skill and knowledge? I’m guessing your job as a trash truck driver, laborer or wall sitter takes more skill than being a police officer. Jeez, you really are stupid.

And what do you mean “talk the way you do?” Do you mean because I spell my words correctly and I display proper sentence structure that I must have went to private school? You, poor fool, are truly lost. Please put the weed down, and go and educate yourself.

                • Let's Think About This... says:

Someone’s bitter because they had to go through the public school system. Hey, smart, productive, well-spoken, in control, intelligent people come from public schools too. Don’t go bashing the system because you couldn’t/didn’t make it work for you. And non-productive, poor speech, skill-less, spineless, average drones come out of private schools too. Just so you know, the school you go to only does a portion of the work in shaping who you become. Still no excuse for laziness…

                  • Think about it says:

                    @ Let’s Think About This…

            • Somerset OG says:

@J! A Thug can’t change if a thug is dead like Tupac! Wow! Why go down the thug road in Bermuda of all places? No food? Go fishing! No home? Live in the trees. I know people who have done it. It’s not like it snows in Bermuda and you’ll freeze to death. Some people’s homes are so dirty that they might as well live in the trees. It’s good that you changed for the better but why did you want to be worse in the first place? You changed from probably good to bad and back to good because bad is stupid! It’s never the right solution when it harms others. I can replace a chain or a television but I can’t replace a brother. A kid can’t replace his biological father! A woman can’t replace that husband or boyfriend that was taken unexpectedly. Congrats on the change you made. We just wish more people would see the light like you!

      • The mon says:

Okay I am with you on the Tupac but I got to say Snoop has done a LOT for his community youth programs, putting kid threw to college you got to give him his props.

    • Mikia says:

I fail to see where my peers are actually struggling and how they think as well.

If you have food to eat, clean water to drink, clothes on your back, clean air to breath and someone, whether a friend or family (or possibly government) to house you, what needs to be heard? Aren’t you basic needs already satisfied?

Do the youth want more? Are programs in Bermuda not suiting your needs? Are the youth not finding jobs which they can come to work on-time and put forward 110%?What is it the youth want? Are the youth trying to tell the rest of Bermuda they don’t have their basic needs to survive?

      • Geza Wolf says:

        No, they just have choices.

Working hard from the bottom in a company that looks at you as a resource not a human being, where you fight for higher wages well your bosses fight to cut wages.

Or you can sell cannabis and make an insane amount of money seeing as cannabis is more expensive here then anywhere in North America…$150 for 7 grams.(which makes Bermuda a promising country to get your drugs into)

All you have to do is get the cannabis on the island, and since the incentive is so great people will continue to punch holes in the gates to push product into bermuda. You can not win a war on supply and demand. If the demand is always there, someone will be there to supply and reap the profits, using them to by allies and weapons.

      • Think first says:

Young people & elders have been stuggling for years on this island. There are thousands of people on this island trying to make ends meet. Sleeping on the street, eating others left overs, cannot go the doctor because they have no insurance, and the ones that do, cannot cover the balance of what the insurance doesnt pay. Some having jobs that are paying their employees b.s. Stop comparing your life to others. Take a better look at whats going on, before you speak nonsense of everyones basics needs being taking care of. The government?!?!We can count on your hand what programs they actually have available to assist young Bermudians. There are hardly any jobs available on the island! People going to university getting their Masters in different programs arent even able to find jobs. So how are they rest of us suppose to find a job, which can provide us with what we need to live a healthy lifestyle?
& The government is useless, they are not concerned about the well being of its citizens.
A couple of years ago they started a program called the hustle truck (Helping Unemployed Sustain Temporary Legal Employment). Which was put in place to give people work until they could possibly find something better. They assisted the elders, handicap. They had 3 trucks each with 12 workers, now they are down to 2 trucks with 5 workers each. WTH is that? Whats the reason for such a drastic downsize.

I do not agree with people doing illegal stuff to make ends meet. However, if they are actually trying to do the right thing to maintain a healty lifestyle legally, and still cant survive, ofcourse they are going to resort to something more drastic. IE…distributing illegal substances, stealing, etc. Its bound to happen!

    • Think about it says:

What do they have to say?! All I hear people say is that no one is listening to the youth! Tupac was a stupid thug. He didn’t start out that way, but throughout his life, he started gravitating toward that lifestyle, and he got killed for it.

  9. So sad says:

He isn’t trying to insinuate anything, he is making a factual statement. 26 year old black male is his profile name and that’s how he is thinking, bottom line. And this isn’t a race issue because I’m a 39 year old black male!

Many young black males, as well as many people make poor choices. My point is simple; the way the comment was written gives the impression of a blanket statement that insults all young black men. Maybe that’s not what was intended, but that’s how it reads.

  10. Unbelieveable says:

Old ass people dont like listening to nobody thats why guys do what they do….sit up here and say ppl like tupac sum of the earth…come on now be for real….ppl listen to guys like tupac and biggy cause some of us can actualy relate to some things that they say…you may relate to some other artist but because they dont sing wa you like its sum of the earth. You old ass people are really stupid thats why it hard for the younger ppl to have respect for you cause all you do is look down on everybody like ya high and mighty and aint got no skeletons in ya closet. Wish sometimes in stead of judging everybody you would try to understand and see where people are coming from. Sit at home behind close doors drinking your coffee dont have a clue wats outside cause you believe the Bulls$#t in the news paper every day.

    • James says:

Well, if we “old ass people” are to try and understand you “younger ppl” then we have to take a course I guess. Because it took me about two reads to actually understand what you were trying to say. Maybe we “dont like listening” because we can’t understand what the hell you are trying to say!

So now that this “old ass” person (me) understands how you communicate, can you express to me where you “younger ppl” are “coming from”? What is going on? What are your problems? How can I help? BUT, do you first want to help yourself by changing your mindset and WORKING?!! I can help but only if you want help and are willing to put in the work.

      Make me a believer, Unbelievable.

      • Think about it says:

Thank you James. Unbelievable sounds like an idiot, and I am not surprised he couldn’t even spell his screen name.

How in the world do these young black males relate to Tupac or Biggy? Did you grow up poor, with a mother addicted to crack? Did you not have food on the table, or have to fight for the scraps when there was? Was your father dead or missing from your life? Do you live in a project building where people are killed everyday and you have to fight for survival?

I’m guessing not. I’m guessing that you grew up in a two parent household, both parents worked, put food on the table nightly, were in your life, were not on drugs and you didn’t have to look over your shoulder every day.

And to address your comment about “Old ass people” and them looking down on you, I am a 24 year old black & Portuguese male, and I look down on you too. Stop making excuses. Get a damn job, show up on time, be courteous. Stop reproducing like rabbits when you know you cant afford to. Stop smoking yourselves stupid. Stop riding up and down the road like you’re invincible, because you’re not. Once you do some or all of these things, maybe people would stop looking down on you.

        • @Think about it – Your ending paragraph articulates something that I think many of us are trying to articulate.

Just because someone is articulate and poised/successful does not mean their life was easy. And just because someone else’s life was difficult, does not mean that their negative is excused as being acceptable.

There are struggles in EVERY SINGLE race. Seemingly unbeknownst to many of these young men – there are people who do much MORE with MUCH LESS.

Just because you have been through trials does not give a “get out of jail free card” for negative behavior. YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO ANY MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE JUST BECAUSE YOU CAME FROM A SH**** BACKGROUND.

You have the SAME opportunities as everyone else so long as you are LIVING and BREATHING and have a functioning mind – YOU HAVE A CHANCE to make things better.

Or, you can sit there still in teenage angst whilst moving through your 20′s and 30′s and 40′s.. waiting to blame everyone else for the things you did not have the courage to attempt and accomplish.

I GUARANTEE you “Unbelieveable” {sic} that there are “Old Ass People” who have come from ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and made something of themselves.
And, there are “younger people” (probably even younger than you) who have been where you are and decided not to be victimized and consumed by it.

Not to mention the kids who grow up in the slums of some eastern nations, where they are ridiculed because of the color of their skin, the caste they were born into, the fact that they have no money, the fact that they are orphans, their lack of education, good clothes, et al… Kids that live in ABJECT poverty, who raise themselves and their siblings with NO parents and NOBODY handing them opportunities left right and center.
Yet somehow they manage to rise above and get out and do something meaningful with their lives.

There will always be someone out there who has had a harder knock life. TOUGH

You may not be able to change where you came from – but you can sure as hell change the direction you are going in.

          That is all.

            • @ think about it

Thank you. I’m SICK and tired of people acting like victims on these forums.

Take the Bermuda National Library – just one example of a place where ANYONE can go and pick up a book. Education is within reach. If you’re out of work (as many of us have been) and need to fill your time between searching for a job – go READ something. You will expand your vocabulary, have meaningful insight to conversations, and may even learn something new. It’s amazing how many guys sit off in the very vicinity of the library and moan and complain about how they can’t get work, the public school system cheated them, the government hates them, blah blah blah.

–Learn to articulate your thoughts intelligently instead of cursing the world. Find peers who share your thoughts and present them logically instead of kicking beer bottles around and hitting on all the women who walk by.

It is FREE for Christs Sakes! There are TONS of books in a building that are FREE for you to read. There are FREE computers to use. And FREE internet too! There aren’t any racial restrictions on who can go in there – that is a golden opportunity RIGHT there that so many people pass up.

BETTER yourselves people. For everyone succesful who had it “easy”
there’s someone there who had it hard.

We didn’t all have a silver spoon in our mouths – but I for one am not going to sit around waiting for one to fall out of the sky for me either.

                • @Think about it

                  I thank you too.

The problem is that some of the people who NEED to read it will skip over the first unfamiliar term. Or call me “white.” Or make some other asinine irrelevant comment.

As a well known master once said:

“The music is nothing if the audience is deaf.”

I know you’ll understand this too – I see you getting frustrated at some posters on here.. but remember what an unknown genius said some time ago – and realize the futility of engaging in a battle of wit with someone who is unarmed :)

                    • @think about it

I’d agree – but then we’d be called elitists! Imagine that, the “mutts” (same breed as well!) of the world having the edge on articulation.

Some things I read on here do make me queasy because they are so glaringly ignorant. But of course every once in a while I have to add my two cents :)

Sleep well knowing that all your effort does not simply blow between the ears of the masses.

@ Think about it and Experience comprises illusions lost, I really like your comments. The truth is always best, even if it hurts. I think if SOME of these young black males would just take a honest look at themselves and start to make better choices for themselves, they would take their rightful places in society, workplace, Government, and even globally!!

Keep your heads up as well, I think what we all write is being read by those who really need to read it. Acting on it, is a totally different story. But we have to start somewhere.

I AM VERY OFFENDED BY SOME OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS ISLAND JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE LIVED A SHELTERED LIFE THEY WOULD NEVER UNDERSTAND WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE US OR BREAK US AND THAT REAL TALK NOT FROM NO GANGSTER BUT JUST A YOUNG MAN THAT KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT BERMUDA AND HOW SOME BERMUDIANS TRULY LIVE AND ARE RAISED ….. BUT I CAN TELL THAT IM REALER THAN YOU JUST FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT YOU CANT ACCPET THE FACT THAT THIS IS THE STATE BERMUDA IS REALY IN …. AND WHEN YOUVE BIN RAISED LIKE THAT FROM YOUNG IS DOES HAVE CERTAIN AFFECTS ON A PERSON AND QUITE FRANKLY YOU CAN SAY O WELL THEY ARE JUST WEAK MINDED BUT HOW STRONG DO YOU EXPECT A CHILD TO BE ????? CAUSE THIS IS WERE IT STARTS FOR ALOT OF THESE GUYS …. FORTUNTELY FOR ME I HAD I FEW GOOD STROKES OF LUCK ON MY SIDE AND THATS HOW I GOT BY AND ITS A STRUGGLE TRUST ME WHEN I SAY SO

          • James says:

Life is a struggle for everyone mate, it never stops, trust me when I say so! We’ve all had tough lives in one way or another, see my latest post below. But the choice is always yours.

It would seem you are going on through life and taking licks, well just continuing working hard, take your licks, and keep on trucking mate. Perhaps try and go back to school (I did at age 30) to get more skills to put you in a better position to earn more money, it can only help.

And here is just a thought, if you are old enough to KNOW that you weren’t raised in the best way and this may be the reason you act/talk/live the way you do. Then you are also old enough to KNOW that it wasn’t right, you can change how you act, and do what you NOW KNOW to be right. What happened during your upbringing isn’t (and never was) an excuse. You know whats right, 99% of know what is right. We just make choices to do otherwise, usually doing otherwise is just easier.

Keep your head up mate. If you need help/advice, ask away. I can help anyone who is already helping themselves.

      • J says:

        i am a 26yr black male too…
@James (former 26 yr old black male): first of all, the largest organ on your body is your skin. I don’t know how you are using your skin to “DO” something with your life (unless your doing Neutrogena commercials), but good luck with that…

And for all you other ignorant people who apparently believe that all young black males are up to no good, thank you for confirming what I thought your thoughts are when you look at me.

But which came first? The chicken (young black male that commits a crime) or the egg (your negative thoughts about young black males)?

Ever thought that we as black males already know what you think of us. Some may internalize your thoughts (subconsciously) and then become exactly who you already think we are… a self-fulfilling prophecy

        • James says:

@J, thanks for the Biology lesson, however you know what my point was and is! Playing with words isn’t going to get you far mate.

I, for one NEVER said “all black males are up to no good”. If you actually read what I said you would see that I said “SOME”. “…. a self-fulfilling prophecy” is what you think I and most people think?! No mate, I actually see the potential in ALL (yes I said all) young black males, simply because we all came from very strong people who came before us. There is no blame to be placed anywhere else except on the man in the mirror. Everyone, especially young black males, is in charge of their own destiny. All it takes is honesty, hard work, self-discipline, and a plan. It isn’t easy, it isn’t pretty, and it isn’t the popular thing to do. But the rewards are what you want them to be AFTER you put in the work.

You state that: “Ever thought that we as black males already know what you think of us. Some may internalize your thoughts (subconsciously) and then become exactly who you already think we are”. I have felt that way myself but my train of thought was “oh ya, you think that I’m so limited and ignorant, I will show you, I will show you all”. That was my catalyst/driving force, I then developed my own plan and NEVER looked back. Nothing special about me, if I can do it you younger guys (who are a lot smarted than I am) can surely do it.

I grew up and went to school in NYC in the 70s-80s. There were times after school where I had three choices: 1-Fight my way home through the mob of Italian boys shouting “n*gga” 2-Run away or 3-Do both. Usually for me it was both. We also were very poor in NYC, I KNOW the meaning of looking in a cupboard and there is nothing there. I also KNOW what sound a bullet makes as it goes by your head, on Rockaway Blvd. in Queens. Very few of our young black men today has ever experienced what I have, or perhaps they have. Either way, the choice to bury your head and just do stupid is NOT the way to go forward.

So forgive me if I don’t have a lot of coddling for SOME of our young black males as they try and give flimsy poor excuses as to why they can’t do what we all KNOW is already resident in them. There are bad choices SOME of our young black men are making and then they are spending most of the rest of their lives paying for the consequences. The choice (as they say) is ours, it always was!!

So as I tried to say earlier to young black males, as I once was, get your act together, stop your ignorance, find out what you want to do, go to school and get educated (creates options), develop a plan for YOURSELF, and then get to just DOING it! (Plan your work and then work your plan!) Once you start to help yourself you will find that more and more people will want to help and they won’t “look at you” the way you’ve been thinking they are looking at you.

  12. Kathy says:

Reading these comments above makes me very afraid for Bermuda. What have we created? We have created a youth that is so completely uneducated and ignorant that it will take 30 – 50 years to fix. Remember, ignorance breeds ignorance!

If you like gang banging and drug smuggling, carry on. One day it will catch up with you and you will land yourself somewhere you don’t want to be. If you can’t choose right from wrong at 26 years old, then we need to start your life over again with basic education (rewind back to preschool).

I am sorry the Bermuda government system failed you and the education system failed you. I am sorry no one understands you, but it is never too late to turn your life around and become educated. What ever happened to educating yourself to better yourself? I guess it doesn’t exist in this fast paced society we live in today.

Good luck with your next package arrival. Remember, someone is watching!

    • Ganja mon says:

Blame the UBP for that ! The man is 26 years old and ignorant. The PLP only been in power for 12. Who do you BLame?

      • Tired of nonsense says:

Always someone elses fault right ganga mon?

I blame the parents for not taking more interest in his education and forcing him to better himself. I blame people like you that seeks to justify their personal failures on everyone else but the actual person. The Govt’s (UBP and PLP) provide the platform for bettering yourself via public education. They cannot force someone to learn and they cannot force parents to act liek parents. Stop expecting everyone to do something for you and go out and do it yourself.

On top of that you state that equal rights were only achieved 40 years ago. The poster in question is 26 years old and thus has had equal rights his whole life, but yet you blame the UBP.

I will tell you one thing the white people, who are racists, that you hate so much love people like yourself. Always blaming everyone and everything underneath the sun for your own personal failures in life. Sitting back b*tching and moaning instead of seeking to transform your ways and your lot in life. All it does is leave one less black person out of the running for the workforce, business owners etc. And that is something that the white racists love as all you are doing is perpetuating the stereotype that they hold in their minds of you. So in the end you are the best friend to the people that you claim to hate so much. How ironic…

Call me a racist all you like my friend. I have been called and treated alot worse by some black Bermudians. So you’re pitiful words will not do anything except waste your breath.

        • Ganja mon says:

technically! I didnt say anything to you, so I didnt waste my breath!

With that said, Im glad your white racist ass loves what you see unfolding in BDA. im not sitting back or wall sitting or any of that stereotype thing you may assume. Im at work wasting time on a nice Friday at my desk in my office. So I am not one of those type that you LOVE to see fail. sorry

          • Tired of nonsense says:

            I never said I loved it…

i said that the whites who are racist (i.e. not all white people are racist) love people like yourself…never did I say that i get joy from watching it…

but it doesn’t matter because you stereotype all white people into one pretty nice package so you can rant and rave and shout racist and other not so nice terms about white people at the top of your lungs…just so you can say it is not me that is racist…

continue on with the hatred my friend…

            • Tired of nonsense says:

And I bet if you were caught “wasting time” by your boss today and reprimanded for wasting their time it would somehow be racist…

              You are a little predictable…

  13. SOMERSET OG says:

@Unbelievable. Old ass people have been around longer which would mean they know more than you about most things. Most old ass people have been there and done that and are trying to tell you it’s not the way to go. If you ever live long enough to be an Unbelievable old ass you will see what these old ass people were trying to tell you. You can’t sell drugs forever because some youngster like you will think it’s Unbelievable that someone as old as you should be selling drugs and then they will muscle you out of your spot. Then you will be thinking it was Unbelievable that you are old and broke and being disrespected by young people who don’t know half as much as you do. Bermuda is nowhere near dirty and grimy compared to every other place in the world. When you talk stupid peole think you’re stupid. that wasn’t directed at you. That was a general statement. I like Tupac and Biggie but they are not role models. Tupac had a way better message than Biggie but he still acted like an ass. Look where both of them are now! Why don’t you check out some Gil Scott Heron. He was saying what Tupas was saying way before Tupac was born. Why don’t you read some Maya Angelou? Stop being angry and open your mind and your ears. If someone tries to talk to you respectfully at least listen to what they’re saying for a minute. Everyone that wasn’t born with a silver spoon in thier mouths doesn’t have to resort to selling drugs and killing each other. Slow down and smell the flowers.

    TO: Bernews,

This debate has been deep and thought provoking and the understanding of our youth and mentality of Bermuda – the old and the new. Just imagine if drugs were freely allowed to enter the country! MMMM Scary I’d say just like some of the negative comments read here today! We need to wake up people and stop blaming the UBP…PLP…WHITES…FATHERS because if you are 21 years of age you need to make the bed you choose to lay in! If your father or relative used drugs doesn;t automatically give you permission to use. Get a job no matter of the level and start living a clean heatlhy life and than you will see HOW PROUD YOU WILL BE OF YOUR COUNTRY, BERMUDA! No DRUGS, THEFT, AIDS, MURDERS, ETC. You may find out that it is possible to be HAPPY IN YOUR OWN SKIN WITHOUT LOOKING FOR APPROVAL FROM SOMEONE ELSE. YOU CAN DO IT…TAKE CARE OF YOURSELD AND WHAT BELONGS TO YOU…YOUR CHILDREN!

  17. About time says:

Surprise surprise I would have never guessed there were “corrupt current and former airport/airline employees in the U.S. and Bermuda who utilized their positions to circumvent airport security and federal inspection procedures to smuggle narcotics”. Thank you for finally catching some but let’s concentrate on convicting them!!

SMH that THE ISSUE always turns to a race argument but am thankful that there are strong black men out there that are not afraid to admit reality or call a spade a spade (hopefully the racists don’t read that wrong, it’s a saying). Everyone knows right from wrong whether you are white, black, pink, or purple; whether you are poor or rich; whether you have parents or not; whether you graduated from high school or not….. some just CHOOSE to use it as an excuse if they aren’t living the perfect life that actually does not exist!

    Enough already!

  19. Opinion says:

I am not taking sides or anything like that but I do believe that everyone has an opinion and thankfully Bernews give us (the viewing public of ALL RACES) a chance to do that through their site so please be mindful of everyone on the site guys!!! I hate reading comments when people are calling other people (of the same race or different race, really doesnt matter) names when it doesnt have to go that far. I agree with certain parts of both sides of the spectrum.

Yes some of these guys (black and white) use excuses as to why they are the way they are and everyone on the Island does…male and female, Black, White and Portuguese but it is up to the individual to change what they are going through and become better people.

I am a young black female and my parents did not have everything in life and nor did I and my children probably wont either but I try my best and that is all that should matter….my parents are very successful, I am successful and I wish success on my children. I say this to say that we need to get back to the days that my parent and grandparents used to talk about.

I hope my post doesnt generate any more confusion as that is not my aim…have a great weekend everyone :)

    • Think about it says:

I’m glad that you’re doing well, however I just want to address one comment you made- I have never once heard a white or Portuguese male use or make an excuse for their current situation. I cannot remember onve having ever once seen or heard of white or Portuguese males getting caught up in crime or gangs. And I don’t care what anyone says, you cannot tell me that there aren’t struggling people in both of those communities. So why is it that the white and Portuguese males suck it up and do what needs to be done, and the black males look for an easy way out or do nothing at all?

  20. confused? says:

I feel that everyone is coming hard on this 26yr old he made quite a dumb comments but there is truth in some of what he has to say. i am 32 now and growing up was not no joke I grew up in bermuda.

I grew up with both parents at home but it was disfunction i had many of days with out lights, didnt know what i was gonna eat, didn’t have any clothes on my back i had to dip water from a hole in the wall with a bucket and extension cord there where 5 of us and my dad would abuse my mom my sister(not sexually) he used to drink alot what we need to look at is how in the eighties the streets were flooded with drugs and alchohol mainly to the poor which caused disfunction in households I’ve seen crackheads with needles sticking out of there arms cuz they cant move (in Bermuda) it is real my mom had to end up working three jobs she couldn’t keep a eye on us because prices where skyrocketing at that time she had to work all a plan and design it’s hard to pull yourself back from sufferation. Some of us made it out and some just didn’t it’s so easy to say just do it but it’s a lot of factors surrounding the demise of our black men. My dad ended up dying becuase of drugs in the end thinking that this was the only way to make ends meet you wanna talk about black owned business there are some but there will be very few who make it to the top i was once a black business owner. every corner i turned was a checkpoint cuz the truth of the matter is it is about control. BUT IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE IT OUT. IT IS HARD THO UM SPEAKING FROM POVERTY IN BERMUDA

    • Playinggames says:

      Real Talk!

    • Applying for green card says:

I hate to sound insensitive to you brother but there are some glaringly clear-cut reasons why you grew up in poverty; that are no one else’s fault except your parents (and I know that it is difficult to describe my respect for your situation from written text). Firstly, it is difficult to live outside of the poverty lines when there are 4 or 5 young ones that need to be cared for. Secondly, your father’s drug abuse problems definitely did not make things easier for you. I am impressed that you made it out of that scenario as a business owner. But I have to say that your poverty-stricken childhood was self-induced. Just imagine how much easier your life would have been if there were not so many mouths to feed and one pay check wasn’t being wasted on drugs and alcohol. Stop thinking like a victim and step from behind that veil of denial. Unless you omitted some important facts, you were poor because of bad decisions made by your parents. Once again, I mean no disrespect, but every problem that you mentioned could have been easily avoided. You may have received a lot more support had you recognized this rather than blaming people who had more structured households for not understanding your childhood plight.

People, some of us are hurling insults, failing to stick to the topic at hand, and showing scant regard for each others opinions.

Reminds me of the House of Assembly, surely we can do better than that!

I guess it is coincidence that on the heels of this global article all of the sudden the people on the inside are caught. Hmmmm

FRIDAY, JUNE 3: The prospect of legalizing some drugs has moved a step closer after an influential international policy report concluded that the ‘war on drugs’ has failed.

A powerful group of former world leaders, including former UN head Kofi Annan and business mogul Richard Branson, have recommended legalization as a potential solution to the blight of the drug trade on communities across the globe.

Bermuda, in the grip of a drug-influenced crime wave, would benefit from heeding the advice of the Global Commission on Drug Policy, says MP Marc Bean.

Mr Bean said the report provided further evidence that it was time for a ‘mature debate’ and potentially a referendum on legalizing drugs in Bermuda.

Wouldn’t that be progressive… but don’t hold yer breath. Too many vested interests, including the U.S. justice industry, makin’ too much money off cannabis prohibition. A draconian prohibition based on racism and outright lies.

Those of you quoting 2pac shakur please stop as you do not know what you are talking about.Tupac died at 25 and never got the chance to change and become a man.
If you want to quote a rapper or someone who got to grow look up the videos on youtube for WIll smith very inspiring and optomistic. Will Smith got the chance to grow as a person.
You all are very young and just dont know what your talking about. Had Martin luther king died at 25 he would have been some unknown preacher to the world,if Malcolm x had died at 25 he would have just been some street guy and if Quincy Jones had died at 25 he would have ended up some broke struggling musician that nobody knew. (This is a statement quicncy Jones said on one of the tupac documentaries)
I shake my head when i hear people using tupac it makes you sound so young and not aware of the real world.

    • My two cents says:

The problem the younger generation has is the older generation is always telling them what is and is not acceptable based on their life experiences which the younger don’t have. That is why the young can’t relate to the old. It’s an age old communication problem. People have to learn the hard way, hey that’s just the way it is.
