July 10, 2014

The Bermuda Hotel Association [BHA] said that it gives its full support to all the efforts currently being made to have the America’s Cup sailing competition hosted in Bermuda in 2017.

Mr. John Harvey, Chief Executive Officer of the BHA, said, “All of Bermuda residents must be delighted with the efforts that have been made to date to secure our island home as the venue for this prestigious and iconic sailing event in 2017.

“Should we be successful, this event will bring untold exposure to our beautiful island and create jobs and new opportunities that can benefit us all for many years to come. The BHA pledges its full support to all parties involved in capturing the America’s Cup in 2017 in Bermuda and wishes to thank all for their efforts to date.”

Bermuda was recently revealed to be one of the last two finalists in determining the host of the 2017 America’s Cup, with the island vying with the city of San Diego, California for the right to host the sailing event.

Following that announcement, Premier Michael Dunkley said, “If Bermuda is ultimately successful it has the opportunity of being a milestone, spectacular event for our island. It will highlight Bermuda’s legacy as a maritime sailing destination and give us unprecedented international exposure.

“Hosting an event of this magnitude on Bermuda’s shores will require the support and participation from all spheres of our community. It will require a unified effort from everyone. The benefit potential for Bermuda is something that we should all be cognizant of, and I very much look forward to joining with all of Bermuda in showcasing our hospitality to the world.”

  1. Unbelievable says:

Ok great! Someone outside of Govt has signed on!

    Let’s see some more organisations!!!

  2. 2017? That is more than 3 years out and anything can happen between now and then

And what about the opportunity we have with something like Miss Universe (my bro’s wifey says they were just lookin around bermy in her taxi) or the World Strong Man and Fitness competition (ESPN coverage) or even the WPT Poker Tour or World Darts Tour (worldwide audience and good way to help kick off gaming)

All of these other events are far less TAXING on Bermuda’s purse strings (and they have not told us how much we have to PAY to get the sailing here so watch out bermuda) and these other events can bring us the maximum in visitors and revenue plus advertizing worldwide for less money up front from us. So lets do something in the CURRENT time frame and more like this and next year.

After all we need help now instead of a talking about a 3 year out pipe dream that we dont even have the money for and something that PLP will likely want to kill off anyway if the OBA is not around to get it done. Sorry but so true and I am PLP to boot so i kno the agenda

So lead us Mr. Dunkley. We need help now with gaming, jobs, health, pensions, education and marketing bermuda as a worthwile destination.

We need ann energy inject in our community by having these events here to make us work togtehr to get them all done. Let’s pick up a shovel and get something real going and show that bermudians really can get things like these events done. Lets be the event destination that we can be. We promise to work hard if you promise to lead us!

    Please!
