BA: Bermuda Flights Cancelled for Day #5

April 18, 2010

Due to the ash cloud from the volcanic eruption Eyjafjallajökull, British Airways has just announced all flights have been cancelled for Monday, April 19th, the fifth day of severe disruption, meaning there will be no inbound or outbound flights to Bermuda. The cancellations are stranding thousands of passengers, including Bermuda’s Premier Dr. Ewart Brown and a 20 strong tourism delegation.

A local BA spokeperson saying:

Passengers are reminded of the need to rebook their flights. Many people have already done that but are reminded that they may now need to rebook once again should their flight be on a cancelled day.

The local ticket office at L.F. Wade International Airport will be open on both Sunday and Monday afternoons from 1pm–6pm to assist passengers in Bermuda .

We sincerely regret such inconvenience to passengers around the world who are impacted in this unprecedented situation caused by the volcancic ash in Iceland.

Various media reports are saying the cancellations may push into mid-week.

The Icelandic volcanic eruption which caused the flight cancellations is thought to have begun on 20 March 2010, about 5 miles east of the top crater of the volcano in Fimmvörðuháls.

On Wed April 14 Eyjafjallajökull resumed erupting after a brief pause, this time from the top crater in the centre of the glacier, causing meltwater floods to rush down the nearby rivers, and requiring 800 people to be evacuated. Below is a raw video showing the volcano as it continues to spew ash and debris:

I feel very sorry for Dr Brown and his entourage stuck over there in London. I siscerely hope they can muscle through at our expense. Sounds like they might have to ‘rough it’ though as four grand a night might make EW a tad unpopular even with his most dedicated sheep – er I mean followers.
