Remembrance Ride: Hurricane Fabian Victims

September 5, 2010

The September 5th Foundation is holding the 7th Annual Remembrance Ride for the victims of Hurricane Fabian today [Sept 5]. Seven years ago Fabian made a direct hit on Bermuda with wind speeds of over 120 mph [195 km/h], and was the first hurricane to cause a death on the island since 1926.

The annual event is held in memory of those who were swept from the Causeway by Hurricane Fabian on 5th September 2003. They were Constable Stephen Symons, Constable Nicole O’Connor, Station Duty Officer Gladys Saunders and Corporation of Hamilton employee Manuel Pacheco. The Foundation has coordinated a motorcycle ride each year that visits the Memorial Bench, erected in their honour, at Kindley Field Park.

This year, for the first time, the anniversary date falls on a Sunday so this year’s event will be all the more poignant. A minute of silence will be observed at the Memorial Bench around 2.25pm today – the time of the tragic incident.

Members of the public are invited to participate in this event, either by riding a motorcycle (any type) in the ride or by attending the Memorial Bench to remember those we lost to the hurricane and to show support for their families and friends. Attendees are invited to bring along a single carnation, so that they can be placed into the sea after the minute of silence. As usual, remembrance pins will be on sale for $10 each with all proceeds going to the September 5th Foundation to provide educational scholarships for the children of those who were lost.

The schedule for the event today is as follows:

  • · Motorcyclists to be at City Hall car-park by 1.30pm
  • · Ride departs approximately 1.40pm with a police motorcycle escort
  • · Ride arrives at Memorial Bench approximately 2.10pm
  • · A few words and a minute of silence about 2.25pm followed by laying of flowers in the sea
  • · Ride then departs, via St. Georges, to Prospect Police Headquarters.
