Carlisle Boss Urged To Keep Nahki Wells
Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott has been told he could be making a big mistake if he allows Bermudian striker Nahki Wells to leave the First Division English football team.
The 19-year-old Bermuda international has yet to push through into the Carlisle side as he enters the final few weeks of the contract he signed in January.
And the man who recommended Mr. Wells to Carlisle, coach Mark Ellis, told a Cumbrian newspaper this weekend he has sounded out other clubs about the Bermudian teenager in case he leaves United in the summer.
But Mr. Ellis, who played alongside Mr. Abbott when they were teammates at Bradford United, said the Carlisle boss should think long and hard before dropping the young Bermudian.
“Carlisle have to be careful, because if they release him he could go and do well for someone else,” said Mr. Ellis. “I’ve already talked to a couple of clubs to make them aware of Nahki. If they take a chance on him it could look bad for Carlisle, so they have to make sure they make the right decision.”
Mr. Wells suffered the disappointment of being left out of United’s 16-man squad for the recent Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley Stadium.
Mr. Ellis, who worked with Mr. Wells at the International Academic and Soccer Academy (IASA), had travelled to the UK national stadium in the hope of seeing him follow in the footsteps of fellow Bermudians Shawn Goater and Kyle Lightbourne in playing at Wembley.
Mr. Wells has made three substitute appearances this season against Bristol Rovers, Southampton and Peterborough. He scored his first goal for Carlisle in last week’s Cumberland Cup win over Gillford Park.
“The feedback I’m getting from the manager is one day Nahki looks unbelievable and the next day he looks a millions miles away,” Mr. Ellis said of the former Dandy Town player. “I’ve spoken to Nahki and told him he needs to force the issue a little bit more. I think his chances are like fifty fifty.”
Head Up Nahki! Stay focused and show these ppl what your made of!!
