Last October, the hotel entered into a Letter of Intent for Rosewood Hotels & Resorts to become the property’s operator. Since then, Tucker’s Point applied, and received, a Special Development Order allowing in principle permission for further development.

Tucker’s Point President Ed Trippe was joined at the event by top government and business leaders, including Patrice Minors, Minister of Business Development and Tourism; Walter Roban, Minister of the Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy; Philip Butterfield, President and CEO, HSBC Bank of Bermuda; and Alex Alt, Senior Vice President, Global Development and Strategic Planning, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts.

Minister Patrice Minors congratulated Rosewood for its new relationship with Tucker’s Point and Bermuda. The Minister noted “The prestige of the Rosewood brand will resonate in other sectors of Bermuda’s tourism industry, helping Bermuda brand itself as a luxury resort destination offering high quality vacation experiences to the most discerning visitors.”

Philip Butterfield applauded Government for its support in attracting Rosewood to Bermuda. He said “Rosewood’s presence in Bermuda attests to Tucker’s Point’s future and augers well for the future of Bermuda’s tourism industry.” Mr. Butterfield went on to say that “the hotel and resort operations are in very capable hands and the residential development has over the years achieved hallmark status as a successful luxury residential resort community.”

Alex Alt, Rosewood’s Senior Vice President Global Development and Strategic Planning, emphasized that Rosewood would “not only continue to raise the standard of the hotel’s physical plant and services, but would also provide excellent employment and growth opportunities for Tucker’s Point’s staff. He said Rosewood operates 18 ultra-luxury hotels in North America, Mexico and the Caribbean, with several new hotels to be added in the next 18 months, including one in Canada, several in the Middle East and other yet-to-be-announced destinations currently in the development pipeline.”

He also cited such benefits for Rosewood Tucker’s Point as “access to its company-wide reservations, sales and marketing systems. Owners and members at Tucker’s Point will become members of Rosewood Reserve, a club exclusively for owners of residences associated with Rosewood properties, which entitles members to benefits, including upgrades and discounts, while visiting member hotels within the Rosewood Hotels & Resorts group.”

Ed Trippe, President of Tucker’s Point, said that the press conference marks an important new beginning for Tucker’s Point. He said “We embrace our partners and staff who have brought us so far. As Bermuda’s first five-star hotel in 30 years, we look forward to building on this market position with Rosewood, driving the continued growth of Tucker’s Point. We also see Rosewood serving as great ambassadors for Bermuda.” Ed Trippe went on to note the importance of the future expansion of the hotel, and said that plans had been put on hold pending the preparation of detailed market and environmental studies.

The press conference was capped off by the unveiling of the new Rosewood Tucker’s Point logo by Ed Trippe, Alex Alt and Rosewood Tucker’s Point Managing Director, Brian Young, alongside the event’s speakers. All joined in a champagne toast to Rosewood Tucker’s Point.

Minister Minor’s full remarks follow below:

Good afternoon,

I am very pleased to be joined by:

The Minister of Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy the Hon. Walter Roban

The President of Tucker’s Point, Hotel and Spa, Mr. Ed Trippe

Senior Vice President of Global Development and Strategy Rosewood Hotels and Resorts, Alex Alt; and

The employees of Rosewood Tucker’s Point

In the past several months, weeks and days, we have managed to navigate through some fairly testing waters regarding the Tucker’s Point property.

However during life’s testing periods, there is a saying that I am quite fond of using… “The secret of achievement is to hold a picture of a successful outcome in the mind.”

Ladies and gentlemen, today marks the dawn of a new day for the Rosewood Tucker’s Point property. And so I am thrilled to join in the celebration of the rechristening of this beautiful resort. The Rosewood Tucker’s Point property is a shining example of the new hope for the development of Bermuda’s hotel product and we are delighted to recognise the efforts by all those involved.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have ambitious plans on the agenda as it relates to Bermuda’s tourism product. A huge part of that plan involves the creation and implementation of a National Tourism Plan.

Another aspect involves the aggressive marketing of Bermuda to our targeted gateway cities in the US and Canada.
Still another key lynchpin in our plan involves working in close partnership with all our hoteliers to ensure that they understand that this Government fully supports their efforts to bolster Bermuda’s tourism product.

As the first luxury hotel to be built in Bermuda in more than 35 years the Rosewood Tucker’s Point Hotel and Spa has been a vital addition to Bermuda’s tourism product, by raising the bar for hospitality facilities and services in Bermuda.
Rosewood Hotel and Resorts, is a five star brand, and has an international reputation for the highest standards of quality and luxury, and their support and management of Tucker’s Point will ensure its continued operation at a high, impeccable standard.

I’d just like to take a moment to impress a little further about the significance of Rosewood entering into the Bermuda hospitality market.

Rosewood is devoted to creating luxury hotels and resorts unlike any other in the world. For more than 30 years, they have designed their properties to ensure that it had amenities and services that enhanced every aspect of a guest’s experience, by reflecting the location’s culture, history and geography.

Their residential-style hotels offer unparalleled attention to detail, an exceptional personalized service and a one-of-a-kind ambiance and style which creates a uniquely authentic experience at each of its resorts.

Whether located in the heart of one of the world’s great cities or in the splendid isolation of a tropical isle, like Bermuda, each luxury hotel and resort is designed to cater to that discerning and sophisticated traveller.

However even with such a laser like focus on ensuring a near perfect visitor experience, they haven’t lost sight of the core values of maintaining a balance with their host country and their product offering.

And to quote their mandate:

  • They respect their guests, employees and owners.
  • They deliver exceptional service to their guests.
  • They encourage every individual’s contributions and personal growth.
  • They honour diversity.
  • They foster work environments that provide personal pride through job satisfaction and a balanced life.
  • They promote open communications, innovation and creativity; and most important
  • They embrace the environment and its surroundings.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Rosewood Tucker’s Point Hotel and Spa, just like this Government and the people of Bermuda have a vested interest in the success of this Island’s tourism product.

Our tourism success is vital to every facet of our community.

Its success is vital to our economy, to all of our restaurateurs, sports and leisure operators, taxi drivers, retail stores and most important to all of the residents who work in the industry.

And while in recent months, weeks and days, there has been considerable discussion coming from certain sectors of the community about the current state of tourism in Bermuda, I want to assure the people of Bermuda that this Government is listening.
However it must be understood that in order to compete and cope in this current climate Governments and tourism authorities around the world have had to readjust the way that they position their tourism product.

Bermuda is no different.

Competition has become ever more sophisticated and focused, as travel destinations vie with one another for limited tourism dollars to attract and maintain a traveller who is now even more discerning on where they choose to spend their leisure time.

Ladies and gentlemen, today’s Rosewood announcement will reverberate globally.

Together, we will collectively put our shoulders to the wheel and take the necessary steps to ensure that we return Bermuda to its pinnacle place in the global tourism market.

On behalf of the Government of Bermuda I want to offer my sincerest congratulations to Mr. Trippe and Mr. Alt for this significant achievement.

Thank you.
