October 27, 2011

Track and field coach Bill Euler is to be honoured by his American alma mater, where records he set as a student still stand.

He is to be inducted into the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater sports hall of fame this weekend.

Mr. Euler holds the UW-Whitewater track and field indoor and outdoor long jump records. He won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference long jump title outdoors in 1992 and earned NCAA III All-America recognition in his event three times [twice indoors].

A teacher in the Bermuda public school system and head coach of the Mid-Island Striders Track Club, Mr. Euler has competed in track and field for the last 29 years and has coached track and field for the last 20 years.

This year’s inductees in the UW-Whitewater Athletic Hall of Fame will be introduced at halftime of the college’s homecoming football game against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday.

The honorees will officially be inducted at a reception and banquet after the game.

Mr. Euler has said his philosophy on coaching can best be described as follows: “I believe that my role in coaching athletes is to assist each athlete to reach his or her full potential and to bring out in them what they already possess. I feel that it is important to teach athletes the fundamentals of the sport, cooperation with their fellow athletes, and how to have fun through personal achievement.

“My favourite quote on the subject is: ‘A good coach improves your game, A great coach improves your life’.”
