February 16, 2012

The Chewstick Foundation has invited author, community activist, and entrepreneur, Danya Steele, to share insights with Bermuda students, facilitate a workshop at their Winter Retreat and lead a discussion in partnership with the Women’s Resource Center.

Danya Steele’s work is committed to bettering the world through youth development, media, and inspiring people to take on their own destinies. Ms. Steele is based between New York and South Africa.

Her work focuses heavily on storytelling and chronicling experiences to empower future generations. She is currently writing a book which highlights emerging young leaders who are changing South Africa in the post-apartheid era.

She has a wealth of experience in heading non-profits focused on Youth Empowerment; in addition to speaking to students at the Mount Saint Agnes Academy and Bermuda Institute she will also be making a presentation at The Bermuda College and at The Chewstick Lounge.

Her approach is always interactive and inspirational; at 27 years old she has already made her mark and she has a passion for helping others to do so as well. Ms. Steele’s work strives to promote understanding of diverse cultures by encouraging self-reflective living and sharing.

The Chewstick Foundation is excited to work with the Women’s Resource Centre, during Ms. Steele’s week of positive influence. Chewstick will be re-launching their popular program BlockDocs, at 6pm on Thursday, February 16th at The Chewstick Headquarters.

This event will start with the screening of a 35 minute documentary entitled “Killing Us Softly” which analyses advertising’s depiction of women in mainstream media.

It decodes an array of print and television advertisements to reveal a pattern of disturbing and destructive gender stereotypes. This film, by Jean Kilborne, challenges the viewer to consider the relationship between advertising and broader issues of culture, identity, sexism, and gender violence.

A primary goal of the BlockDocs series is to facilitate community dialogue, after the film Ms. Steele alongside representatives from The Women’s Resource Center, will discuss the role and portrayal of women in the media.

This event will provide attendees a deeper understanding of the Women’s Resource Center initiatives as well as highlight ways that people can overcome these messages to create a unique and powerful destiny for themselves.

Women and men of all ages are encouraged to attend and learn about the work that The Women’s Resource Centre does, as well as gain knowledge on how they might be able to combat the messages presented by mainstream media and advertising. This is a free event, and donations are graciously accepted.

This is The Chewstick Foundation’s first venture in having an international facilitator as part of their Retreat program. Along with Ms. Steele’s workshop there will be workshops on African drumming, song-writing, yoga, fitness, guitar, demonstrations on head wrapping, healthy cooking, time for self-reflection, and more.

Set at the fully equipped Paget Island attendees need only to bring their personal belongings and toiletries. A full listing of items is on www.chewstick.org or can be shared over the phone by calling the Chewstick office on 292-2439.
