Taxi Driver Jailed For Selling Crack

March 13, 2012

37-year-old taxi driver Hewvonnie Brown of St David’s was sent to jail for two and half years this morning [Mar.13] for drugs offences involving $13,000 worth of crack cocaine and over $52,000 of cash that was the proceeds of illegal drug transactions.

After being tipped off, Police had stopped Brown in Hamilton on 21st March 2011. Police found the drugs as well as equipment for the preparation for sale of illegal drugs stashed in a backpack in Brown’s taxi. Brown has been in custody ever since then.

Brown pleaded guilty to the offences and was sentenced today. DPP Prosecutor Cindy Clarkes submission and recommendation was for an immediate jail sentence.

His defence lawyer, Justin Williams argued that the section of the Crown’s submission referring to an Increased Penaly Zone should be struck out. Mr Williams argued that the reference to an Increased Penalty Zone should struck out as Brown had actually been stopped on Front Street.

Given the opportunity to speak on his own behalf, Brown told Magistrate Khomisi Tokunbo: “My family didn’t raise me to do this… I’ve rededicated my life to Jesus Christ.”

Brown apologised to Mr Tokunbo telling him that he regretted putting the Magistrate in “in the position of having to put another black man from Bermuda behind bars”.

Magistrate Tokunbo replied: “Most of us are not raised to be in this position. It’s temptation that attracts us to these sorts of things. But as you say, it’s my job. It’s not the end of the world.”

Recognizing that the cash had been confiscated from Brown and rejecting the defence submission to ignore the IPZ element, Magistrate Khomisi Tokunbo sentenced Brown to eighteen months in prison on the charge of possessing with intent to supply and added twelve months for having done so in an IPZ; meaning that Brown must serve two and a half years.

The Magistrate then added a second sentence of twelve months for having the cash proceeds. The second sentence will run concurrent with the IPZ penalty. On release Brown must serve eighteen months probation, and time already spent in custody will count.

As Prison Officers took him back through the grey door that leads to Westgate, Brown exclaimed: “Hallelujah.”

Pity MR Brown’s dedication to jesus Christ did not stop him from traffiking in contraband in the first place. Too many of our young men only seem to come to absolute faith when they are caught on the wrong side of the law this is a poor testimony. We hear wonderful reports of good up bringing by young people before the courts when they have disgraced themselves. If we are going to invoke God’s name let it be for consistent Christain living then we can truly say praise God. ANYTHING ELSE RINGS HOLLOW!
