[Updated with video] The police held a press conference today [Apr.17] regarding policing, traffic and parking for the upcoming 2012 Agricultural Exhibition, which will take place this weekend coming commencing on Thursday 19th April concluding on Saturday 21st April 2012.

The police said they will be conducting “high visibility patrols throughout the event with the intents of providing public reassurance and to deter criminal and anti-social behaviour.” Police officers will be assisted by the Bermuda Reserve Police, and will be partnering with security providers, with CCTV cameras to be deployed throughout the grounds.

Superintendent Martin Weekes’ full statement is below:

The Bermuda Police Service takes this opportunity to advise the public on a number of matters to ensure a peaceful and safe time during this year’s Agricultural Exhibition which will take place this weekend coming commencing on Thursday 19th April concluding on Saturday 21st April 2012.

High Visibility Patrols

The Bermuda Police Service will be conducting high visibility patrols throughout the event with the intents of providing public reassurance and to deter criminal and anti-social behaviour and to assist with traffic control in an effort to minimise traffic disruptions and facilitate safe passage for road users in the area with the overall aim of making Bermuda safer.

In line with our strategic intent of guns, gangs, drugs and violence reduction, the BPS is intent on deterring those members of the public that might seek to disrupt the event with acts of violence and criminality.

Police officers at the event assisted by their colleagues from the Bermuda Reserve Police will be partnering with security providers at the event to deter crime and anti-social behavior. Those persons who are not deterred by the presence of the police and commit these offences can expect to be promptly arrested and delivered to the courts.

CCTV cameras will be deployed throughout the grounds by our partners in the security industry.

Road Traffic

Throughout the event the usual traffic diversions will be in place around the Botanical Gardens, Point Finger Road, Berry Hill Road and South Road as below:

No Parking

i) No parking is permitted along South Road between the junctions of Point Finger Road and Tee Street or along Berry Hill Road between the junctions of Point Finger Road and Tee Street (except physically challenged persons). This will be controlled by Public Works signs.

Parking

i) Physically challenged persons: Parking for the physically challenged will be permitted on the south side of Berry Hill Road north of the Botanical Gardens. They should use the entrance marked E 7 on the plan.

Hopefully they use the metal detector wands & search ALL bags thoroughly before anyone enters.

Also BPS should have officers stationed at the area of the gardens with the big rubber tree & behind the new garden squares in that area. This has been where many altercations happen through all the years of the exhibition. When I mention stationed at the area this means military style station where they don’t move till relieved by rotating officers. Coming & going in this area doesn’t work because trouble makers will keep watch for when the police walk out of this area.

Regiment – might as well use them for something – no?
