Employee Admits Stealing Phones From CellOne

September 20, 2012

In Magistrates Court this morning [Sept 20], 25-year-old Warwick resident Jahmarley Gardiner pleaded guilty to stealing three cellphones from his employer CellOne. The three phones [Samsung Galaxy models and an iPhone] were together worth $2,137.

What was described by Crown Prosecutor Susan Mulligan as an ‘unsophisticated scheme’ was uncovered when phones were brought back for service and repair. On checking with the customers who had brought the phones in for repair, Mr Gardiner was identified as the person who had sold them the phones.

CellOne management contacted Police and under Police questioning, Mr Gardiner admitted his actions and pocketing the proceeds of the sale. The offences all took place in May and June 2012.

Senior Magistrate Archie Warner ordered a Social Inquiry Report and granted Mr Gardiner bail of $2,000 with one like surety with a return date of 31st October when he will be sentenced.

  1. Really?? says:

Why don’t local business hire Bermudians again???

    • grow up says:

Seriously! Your comment is immature and thoughtless. People from all walks of life, local and foreign do dumb things.

      • Really REAL says:

Immature? Thoughtless? Wrong!! How about “Factual” and “Pathetic”?

Yea, well today’s media paints a perfect picture of why Bermudians don’t get hired (or re-hired as in another article…or hired by the airport….do I need to go on????) This place sux – wish I could afford to move away with my BabyMamma to the UK.

Down the toilet Bermuda, day by day….circling the drain the whole lot of us.

        • Free says:

So you are saying only Bermudians steal and thus this is why businesses aren’t hiring them? That’s quite idiotic.

What’s factual and pathetic is that you knocked a girl up and aren’t even willing to marry her. Yes you should move away with your “babymamma”, I’m sure you’ll find local criminals there as well.

          • RIP Buddy says:

I think what he meant was..at least when Foreigners steal they are sent home…not a worry about repeat offending , cleptomanaic etc..

Why in this day and age, with so few jobs and so many lining up for them would anyone be tempted to do something so stupid.

          • Trufth says:

Dude, he was being sarcastic! Get it? He doesn’t actually have a kid. He just made a mockery of several of the other pathetic recent media articles. All of which are indicating that yes, only Bermudians are doing these sh!tty things. If an expat did any of these things, the articles would CLEARLY state “guest worker did such and such,” or “Foreign National did blah, blah, blah.” Do you see any of these such descriptions in the recent onslaught of pathetic behavior in the media? No, neither did I. These fine acts of stupidity, desperation and illegal behavior are all brought to you by this island’s home-grown finest! Cheers Bermuda, well done! “Proud to be Bermudian woawoa” or however that song goes.

            • Free says:

I do get that “he” is you. You can change your name but your icon is the same. Do you not get that?

Sarcastic? Well first off “sarcasm” is hard to detect through written word and secondly your “sarcasm” was poorly used and just sounds like an excuse for your ignorance.

“All of which are indicating that yes, only Bermudians are doing these sh!tty things.”

Still being sarcastic right? That above sentence is utterly ridiculous, just the other day a foreigner on the cruise ship was in court for stealing. http://bernews.com/2012/09/passenger-admits-theft-on-cruise-ship/

Also maybe you are only seeing Bermudians doing these “sh!tty things” is because this is Bermuda and this is a Bermudian news media website. Get it? Good.

              • Grasping big time says:

No Pal, you’re the one that doesn’t get it – you are grasping at some serious straws trying to bring a cruise ship passenger into a conversation about locals committing crimes. Duh. The original post was:

“Why don’t local business hire Bermudians again??? So we weren’t talking about some thief on a cruise ship that happens to stop here. We’re talking about locals! This is a local thing. Bermudians vs. Non-Bermudians. Got it? Good.

                • Free says:

I’m not your pal and there is nothing to “get”.

If we are talking about locals I could also give you examples of that(Filipinos who stole a large sum of money here), or better yet you could go find them yourself. You could use some common sense and realize that there are more Bermudians in Bermuda than foreigners in Bermuda. Obviously the crime rates would not be equal.

What I “got” is that you are probably mentally ill with multiple personalities that are clashing. Bermudians aren’t the only people who commit crime-get that! Making sweeping generalizations about all Bermudians is ignorant. Understand that? I doubt it but great!

              • Yada Yada Yada says:

                Busted. LMAO!!

            • Mayan says:

@Trufth: Why don’t you just shut up. It’s so clear that many of the comments posted on here are by jealous, Bermudian-hating expats. It just kills you that we Bermudians get to stay here for life while you can get sent home at any time. If you had your way, you’d kick all of us out and stay here in tthis beautiful country, wouldn’t you?

For the record, there are criminals in EVERY country in the world! At least in Bermuda we don’t have kid-snatching pedo freaks and theatre-shooting mass murderers like the countries most of you are from. If you don’t like Bermuda or Bermudians, here’s some advice: GET THE F**K OUT AND DON’T COME BACK!!!

            • Mayan says:

@Trufth: Ha, ha, ha…I just read noticed as well that you’re posting under different names-how pathetic! Any credibility you had just went out the window as you have some kind of multiple personality disorder going on! You’re referring to this other person who is YOU! No wonder you know so much about him including the fact that he really doesn’t have a baby momma! You’re the same person!

‘Dude’, don’t you notice that all the users their own distinct avatar? So when you come back and make multiple comments using different aliases to defend your own stupid comments, the avatar is the same so we all know that it’s the same poster…you have been busted and you are clearly not very smart, Mr. Blue, Winking Eye Triangle Thingy Icon who is using different names to support yourself since no one has your back but you. I’m laughing my head off right now!!!

        • GET A LIFE says:

How bout save up look into getting a job out there and go live with you “babymama” who is probably living off of the gov out there anyways.

    • mixitup says:

You sound like a real donkey. DO you recall the change in Management at Tucker’s Point earlier this year? Well it was a foreign senior manager who was sent “quietly” packing and it wasn’t retirement!

    • Slick says:

So many haters in bermuda, im gonna turn into Malcolm X and make them even madder.

  2. Claudio says:

4 years down the road when the economic situation is worse, he will probably the one of the people who complains that Govt aint doing nuffin for them and that businesses are filled with foreigners.

Would steal and make 2k from phones while losing your jobs that pays prolly around 28-300k.

    Backwards I tell you

    • PathetiSad says:

Actually Claudio, 4 years down the road this guy will be running for Govmit if things stay as they are……

  3. realism says:

damn bra sorry to see that happen to you. dont worry about all these haters online, guys dont have a clue about ur situation here. proud u manned up 2 it. takes big cahoonas, keep ur head up bra, its just a bump to get thru, times r hard, and these BS immigration laws r old and outdated. to all you haters out there get a life, its sad how 3 phones make the news paper lol.

  4. MUFC says:

Realism, ya ace boy didn’t man-up to the offences. He got caught red handed and agreed to the rap cuz he was guilty as sin! Stealing is stealing ace boy whether it’s three phones or a loaf of bread off the grocery store shelf. Oh, and it ain’t just a “bump”. He now has an official police rap sheet which all future employers take an interest in.

    • realism says:

wishful thinking acting like u know, when u obviously dont. its a news report, its a person that wrote a artical on minimal facts, hence how news papers run. newspapers sell cause of bad news not good news, do u actual trust THEY GOT THE WHOLE STORY ofcourse not. people r bloody sheep u listen to all that people tell u. so if i had a paper and i told u jumping off a bridge onto rocks is a good idea for ur health would u do it. because its published in a news paper. seriously take there word for a grain of sand and go from there.

  5. smhgurrrllll says:

Its sad because didn’t he go to school for IT? Or somewhere in that field just to come back and NOT find a job so got one ate cellone selling cell phones that anyone with a high school diploma can do? Man I tell ya.

  6. Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

why is it very rarely that i can read about some sort of resolve here from my Bermudian people….nothing but rambling Opinions…shooting from the hip and hoping…total kaotic expulsion of words which is good for general conversation but here at Bernews, what i call, Us Bermudians Voices…im sorry but i dont have much confidence from what i read, to see a bright future….We need a Total Change of Mindset….like Barak says im gonna rebuild America….Well lets do Bermuda before NWO does it for you….

  7. Yada Yada Yada says:

You all are a bunch of dreamers!!

  8. Ha Ha Hee Hee says:

You all are a bunch of dreamers!!

  9. Under Paid says:

This guy was a hard worker and very under paid. It’s a shame that Bermuda didn’t support him upon his return to the island and help him find a better paying job to support his family of 4. No, stealing is not right at all and it was big of him to man up to it. Cell one made way more off of him in sales commissions and never gave an incentive to show appreciation. It’s was wrong of them to make him work so hard for peanuts and wrong of him to take it to the next level to sell their phones under the marked up prices. Come to think about it, I look at as him being sort of like Robin Hood. I am sure the people he sold too got the phones dirt cheap. Dumb of them to mess up a good thing lol. Real talk, if murderers, child molesters and gang bangers get slapped on the wrist leave the guy alone! Give him community time where he can use his degree fixing computers for government so they can work faster to get folks paid on time.

    • Claudio says:

Most blue collar workers here are underpaid so is it justified that they start stealing too?

    • Just Us says:

@ Under Paid, Jahmarley must be your aceboy. You sound like you flock with the same click… Could you imagine if we all were Robbing Hoods? What happens when one starts stealing from the wrong person that worked hard for what they have and ain’t taking you or anyone else’s shyt? I know stealing is common in these parts but it ain’t right…. No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren!

  10. Dat Islander Cat says:

“The future of Bermuda is secure if this is the quality of young people here”, Premier Scott said…

…Back in 2005 when Jahmarley and 12 other students represented Bermuda in the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York.

    Seven years later… ouch! Fail.

    Islander

  11. who asked u? says:

Don’t throw stones if you don’t live in A GLASS HOUSE!!! People here are simple minded and they wonder why foreigners are brought here to take over…. u want to talk about this well lets talk about the women who is sleeping with people husbands traveling back n forth??? HOW ABOUT THE men with their pointless gang violence killing off people kids and children parents??? DEVILS ISLAND 21 miles are u serious? how about how people sit around and talk about people when your out they don’t know you or maybe do whats the point if u worrying about the next person. just mind your business!!!! All these bad things starts from somewhere.BROKEN HOMES!!!! NO MOTHER OR NO FATHER…MAKE A CHANGE AN STOP CRITICIZING thats how it will get better….

  12. Under Paid says:

What happens to the individuals who made the purchases from him, aren’t they just as guilty as should also be sentenced? They need to be exposed and sentenced as well because he’s not the only their or person who deceived. What’s the sentence for the accessors……….food for thought. The root of the problem is far greater than what’s on the surface.

    • Just Us says:

Now ya worrying about who he sold the phones to! If your for him ( Jahmarley) robbing the hood and selling the phones, what do you care what happens to the receiver. He was helping ya boy get away with someone else’s goods… Or are you saying if one gets caught they should all be rounded up?

  13. Under Paid says:

I am by no means condoning the radical behavior or Jahmarley but am saying the justice system needs to place focus on all parties involved not just him. Its the same concept as you would view a Gun Seller and a Purchaser on the island on Bermuda. Everyone involved knows they have done something illegal so why is the focus put on just one.

  14. Under Paid says:

@Just Us. No, he is not my company however have encountered him at Cell One and he seemed to be a well put together young man. You know Bermy is small and most have said nothing but good things about his personality and the fact that he was an asset to Cell One outside of the bad choice he has apprantly made. It was a crime commited, i do not down play that fact but feel that this type of crime doesnt deserve to be put on headline news when we have far greater issues to address on this island.

  15. the new bermuda says:

what I think is really sad about the situation is that he was one of the better staff members there, most of the staff that work there have
I am doing you a favor by being here attitude .. he was always polite and ready to assist you with your inquire, what makes me wonder is that
I not the only person that feels this way…I am sure the management must know but just dont care, bcause you it is Cellone or Degicil pick your choice but I must say that Degicil staff are a lot better, hats off to
the CEO there , saw him on TV he mention that they do constant staff traing.
