Bermuda Technology Innovation Award Winners

Bermuda’s Technology Innovation Awards, known as the ‘Tech Awards” was held last night at the BUEI and was hosted by MC Glenn Jones. Now in its sixth year, the objective of the competition is to publicly recognise the outstanding achievements being made in Bermuda’s information technology industry. Technology, its use and availability, is vital to the future success of Bermuda and all Bermudians, as we live by it Everyday; Everywhere; Everyone.

The Tech Awards cover several digital categories including the best interactive experience, best business solutions, the best of the local e-commerce sites, best local mobile applications, the most innovative youth project, the most inspiring mentor or teacher and, of course, the innovation of the year for the local and international markets. A People’s Choice Award was added for the first time this year.

Every year the public is invited to submit entries for their favourites in each category. For the 2012 TechAwards, 137 nominations were received, an increase over the number submitted last year.

During the reception, the nominees and guests were treated to demonstrations by students and teachers from Warwick Academy, Bermuda High School For Girls and Somersfield Academy, of their submissions in the category of” Most Innovative Youth Project”. In addition, attendees enjoyed testing out a solar powered golf cart from the Rosewood Tuckers Point Golf Club, proving that technology innovation is everywhere, including at the golf course.

The Best Interactive Experience was awarded toTour de Turtles Bermuda. Tour de Turtles Bermuda helps to raise awareness both in Bermuda and around the world about the country’s iconic green turtles, while also uncovering important information about their daily movements and long-range migrations. In second place was BermudaNightOut.com and the third place winner was Maven Concepts for developing PrideBermuda.bm.

The Best Business Solution was won by Gateway Systems Ltd. Amongst the many comments made by the nominators for Gateway, the one that stands out is “The ongoing development of their customs clearance product does what it is suppose to do; save time, effort and money.” In second place was Onsite Engineering Services Ltd and the third place winner was Bermuda Sun Newsbite.

The Best Local E-Commerce Website was won by Five Star Home Delivery. Five Star Home Delivery was noted for establishing itself as the one stop shop for delivery service for just about anything. Customers have the option of ordering groceries, laundry service, restaurant takeout, with real time tracking of orders for those who are“very impatient”.In second place was DNA Creative Shoppe and the third place winner was Red Laser Ltd.

The Best Mobile Application was won byVIBE 103 FM. One nominator was noted as saying: “They are at the top of their category for putting Bermuda’s listeners first”. In second place was Bermuda.com Mobile App and the third place winner was Xcess Bermuda.

The Most Innovative Youth Project was awarded to Ariel Kaplen,a graduate from The Bermuda High School for Girls. Ariel developed an IT solution that helped with the bookings and the ticket sales of all the plays and musicals performed at the school, a process that in the past had been done manually. In second place was the First Lego League Robotics Team #1299 from Somersfield Academy and the third place winner was the LipDub 2012 by Warwick Academy.

The Most Inspiring Teacher or Mentor was awarded to Michael Branco. One nominator wrote: “Michael is deserving of this award as he has given countless hours to supporting and mentoring youth in IT”. In second place was Christian Blais and the third place winner was Baljit Saini.

The Local Innovation of the Year was won byCellOne for its Crown and Anchor App which was developed by Cosmic Ltd. The nominator said: “This is an opportunity to honor a local developer and company who have harnessed their resources to capture a Bermudian tradition.”

The International Innovation of the Year was First Atlantic Commerce for the development of its Tokenization product used by international clients.The nominator said: “FAC should be recognized for its commitment to serving customer needs through continuous product enhancement.”

And lastly the People’s Choice Award went to Coffee Works Bermuda Limited, who received the most nominations overall.

Minister of Business Development and Tourism  Wayne Furbert applauded the 2012 winners: “I offer my congratulations to all who were nominated and encourage you to continue the good work that you do. I was extremely impressed by the creativity and technology innovation displayed in the entries this year.
