Ground Control Exhibit At Masterworks Museum

October 7, 2013

Masterworks Museum new exhibit “Ground Control” featuring works from the Permanent Collection will open in the Rick Faries Gallery on October 11th, 2013.This exhibit opens in conjunction with the 2013 Charman Prize and will be on display until January 2014.

Landscapes will be the main focus of the exhibit; perhaps a somewhat strange concept for many people who believe the Permanent Collection contains only paintings of the ocean, beaches and Bermuda cottages. In fact, a visiting British curator believed that landscapes were not part of the muse of the Collection. Her opinion prompted Tom to recalla 1970’s David Bowie song and think of the line “Ground Control to Major Tom” and then informed her that the 1,400 strong collection contained a number of beautiful landscape paintings.

This exhibit will explore the development of landscape painting in the plein air tradition and will feature works by Ambrose Webster, Ross Turner and local artists. There will be approximately 20 works on display from bright, vibrant oils to more delicate watercolours.

Museum Founder & Director, Tom Butterfield, is keen to impress upon the Bermuda public that, “The Permanent Collection is so rich after 26 years of collecting art that it is almost impossible to stop coming up with ideas for exhibits! However, since a new show opens every month in the Rick Faries Gallery, it is not possible from a cost perspective to change the main gallery exhibit. We aim to exhibit two Bermudiana Collection exhibits annually, and our goal is to make them high quality, informative and interesting as possible.”

Indeed, this exhibit will give the viewer a sense of the Island from a landscape point of view. With a little imagination the Masterworks Museum utilizes their diverse collection, all in a “Bermuda Frame of Mind”, to create exhibits for locals and visitors from overseas.

The Masterworks Museum opened in 2008 and is home to over 1,400 works of art; all inspired by the beauty of Bermuda. Set in the Botanical Gardens, the state of the art museum occupies 16,000 square feet with four exhibition areas, a Member’s Lounge, classroom, gift shop, cafe, conservation room and storage room. Art classes are held after school and during school holidays and Homer’s Cafe offers daily lunch specials with both indoor and outdoor seating. The Museum is open Monday – Saturday 10am – 4pm and Sundays 11am – 4:30pm.
