Opposition Leader’s Bermuda Day Message

May 25, 2014

MARC BEAN (1)Heritage Month provides an opportunity for Bermudians to reflect upon our shared history, culture and values. As we gaze back over the years, we begin to understand that Bermudians have a history of overcoming adversity and rising like a phoenix from the ashes of economic and social devastation.

Throughout the ages, Bermudians have had the courage to change and evolve to reflect the economic realities of the age. From farming through shipbuilding, whaling, tourism and International Business, Bermudians have seen our fortunes wax and wane, yet we have continued to create, innovate and change with the times.

Today, we must continue our evolution, not by clinging to what worked in the past, but by having the courage and vision to reinvent ourselves yet again. This reinvention must begin with a real commitment to the belief that our greatest resource is our people. That belief must be backed up by investing in our people through education, workforce development and training designed to make our people the best at what they do; not just the best from Somerset to St. George’s but the best in the world.

Next, we must ensure that Bermudians, who have the will to work, have the opportunity to work in the land of our birth. We must face and fight the institutional, social, cultural and racial obstacles to fairness, opportunity and equality that continue to plague our island.

Our reinvention must also be fueled by a commitment to supporting and lowering barriers to Bermudian entrepreneurship and creativity, examining any and all policies, fees or laws that hinder the ability of people of vision to create economic opportunities for them and others

Bermuda Day is a celebration of everything that has been, is and will be Bermudian. I am encouraged that we are beginning to embrace the belief that a Bermuda that works for Bermudians is the best path to prosperity and social unity. I am encouraged that we are beginning to believe in our own value, our own ability and our own strength. Overcoming our differences and supporting a common goal of a Bermuda that works for Bermudians will create unity, strengthen our island and is the path to brotherhood and the fulfillment of the dream that Bermuda can be another world.

God bless Bermuda, and all who love her and call her home.

- Opposition Leader Marc Bean

  1. js says:

especially like the part when Bean says

“lowering barriers to Bermudian entrepreneurship and creativity, examining any and all policies, fees or laws that hinder the ability of people of vision to create economic opportunities for themselves and others”

I was thinking the exact same thing when the Bar Council President stated publically on April 24th that the Council was gonna make recommendations to government to enact legislation to ‘set standards’ of post qualification experience before a lawyer can go into sole practice

if the current government were foolish enough to pass such a piece of anti-competition legislation one in particular which has been endorsed by a person who is himself in sole practice any future PLP government needs to have it repealed and further enact legislation directed towards bringing the Bar Council into the 21st century

not normally political but I would be minded to vote PLP moving forward on this principle alone

    • Soooo says:

The bar association is trying to protect the population from lawyers that have no or limited experience. Just as doctors have to compete an internship under the tutage of an experienced doctor. Unless of course Mr js would like to be the 1st patint

      • js says:

the bar association already has an internship and that’s called a pupilage

as an attorney and a member of the Bermuda Bar I can advise you that the association is only seeking to protect themselves

  2. Terry says:

And Mr. Bean is the one that brings up race once again but with a subtle approach.
    “cultural and racial obstacles”.

    Mr. Dunkley did not.

    Shalom.

    • Hmmm says:

Bean made it about him, politcal, divisive and left a sour taste. Nasty piece of wirk is Bean

      • Anon says:

Marc Bean needs to resign immediately

        • Watchful says:

Marc Bean only has bad words for others, no solutions and no ideas.

          Dunkley… I think I trust him. Bean, I don’t trust at all.

  3. Mumbo jumbo says:

I don’t know mate…we had a few good years with UBP…we had rent to buy housing and plenty offit, also when dey said low cost…IT WAS LOW COST.Ship!…..You could walk out your door in the morning …paint a roof….name your own price…there was work every where…the roads were paved, the bridges painted and maintained, you had a govt.that moderated cost of insurance and medicine….the struggle came when plp took de reigns…..de devil was on the loose!Satan walked the earth…de great deceivah!

    • Coffee says:

I agree with everything you said Mumbo , but all paid for the US ,CANADIAN AND BRITISH FORCES STATIONED IN BERMUDA AS A PERMANENT BACKSTOP FOR THE UBP . However as the now disgraced former AG MARK PETTINGILL would say , don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story .

      • Comebye Ahh says:

Do you have idea what these military bases paid? Very little. The US helped with the bridges and helped with essential services but their members lived on their bases, rented their own homes, had their own movie theatres, grocery stores, bowling alley and even McDonalds. You are grasping t straws.

        • Coffee says:

And when they left we had to foot the very expensive bill for the upkeep of the airport . Hundreds of home owners lost rents all over the island , those rents stimulated the economy in every economic environment .

          • Hmmm says:

It was 93 when international insurance business started expanding. The rents is moot.

How much did the airport cost to maintain?

            • Coffee says:

That’s a lie …’93 was a recessionary year . Airport operations and maintainance ran into the millions . As a matter of fact during Dr.Browns tenure Bermuda was ordered by the FAA to do some major runway structural changes to bring FREDDIE WADE up to current international standards .

  4. Mumbo jumbo says:

De devil came down Bermuda….he vuass lookin for a soal to steal….lats juss home Michael plays a mean fiddle!

  5. Mumbo jumbo says:

    Home;-hope.

  6. Comebye Ahh says:

    Happy Bermuda Day to all!

  7. Raw Onion says:

Marc forgets that our heritage includes many races and cultures combining over the centuries to make Bermuda the country that it is today. His subtle hints at race and inequality are typical of his style of politics and racial sensationalism. It needs to stop. It’s such a shame that I’ve known Marc since high school days yet today I would never vote for him nor consider him the type of person I’d want to represent my country and its people.

    • lucky 7 says:

@raw onion–he’s not thinking clearly, he’s still working on his big bowl of sour Grapes!!

    • Comebye Ahh says:

Yes, I had high hopes for him too. A strong opposition with direction would help Bermuda. Its a shame he decided to take direction from the medicine man. He needs to take a look back at the older PLP members that had class like Mr. Alex Scott, Eugene Cox, Jennifer Smith, Mr Wade, Paula Cox, The Listers to name a few.

Mr. Bean, raise your standards, take some positive steps and direction and show us that you can lead and put personal matters aside. If not step aside and let someone else step up. We need good leaders and a good opposition leader.

      • Put pupils first says:

Bermuda would certainly benefit from a progressive labour party rather than a PLP!

      • Raymond Ray says:

“Comebye Ahh” it’s unfortunate, especially in politics, that some politicians are like leopards, they never change their spots.

        • Hmmm says:

Paula Cox…me thinks you made a typo there.

  8. ONLY HOPE says:

PLP Supporters one and all! Bean needs to GO, we can win the next election but he will take us to ruin with his thuggish behavior and less than honorable ways, I am PLP to the heart but he is an embarrassment.

    • Watchful says:

Er, it’s been 18 months. The PLP made an unbelievable mess of this place, they shouldn’t be winning anything for a very long time.

  9. nuffin but the truth says:

No one is listening to MB or the defunct and failed lying plp.
Those that try forget they have their heads in the sand!

  10. Cleancut says:

Count how many times he uses “Bermudians” in this message. He is stroking the public. He must think “Bermudians” are stupid.

    • lucky 7 says:

@cleancut–yeah, but is he talking about “real Bermudians”? Lol

  11. Kevin says:

Thank you for your Bermuda Day words ..just as they are again MB cannot be positive how do you wake up every day and be negative must be pretty hard but then again your entire future/ career rests on the failure of the current government when can our politicians work together for once …once! 14 years of disaster has be that “history” only together will we climb out of this sink hole we currently are in. We must embrace development and casinos with it comes jobs and further investment. Stop Being Ostriches …..

    • Raymond Ray says:

It’s absolutely true, that the only way for this Island(and its inhabitants) to get out of the rut we’re presently and possibly for countless more years will be facing is “if” certain folks can see beyond the colour of another’s skin tone:-( This must be the only place in the entire world where the vast majority of its citizens are classified as either being, “Black” or “White” :-( It’s getting played out…”Until the colour of a mans skin is of no-more significance than the colour of his eyes there will be war…”H.I.M.

  12. Kindley says:

Mr. Bean needs to remember he was not elected premier. And agree with Raymond Ray.
