Videos: PLP, OBA Candidates After Bye-Election
The PLP’s Jamahl Simmons won the bye-election in Constituency #33 Sandys South this evening [Nov 18], defeating the OBA’s Georgia Marshall, winning 462 votes [58.18%] to the OBA’s 326 [41.05%], with 6 spoiled ballots [0.75%].
Mr. Simmons holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and began his career as a broadcast journalist with VSB News.
He previously served as the PR Director at the Fairmont Southampton, the Press Secretary to former Premier Dr Ewart Brown, and a UBP Member of Parliament from 2002 – 2007.
After the results were announced this evening, Mr. Simmons told his jubilant supporters, “One of my constituents who came out today, a famous radio announcer many people know, he had a unique catch phrase…he used to say ‘And I’m back’.
“First, I would like to give thanks to God to all whom is due, but the victory is not mine, it is the people of Constituency #33, and it is for the hard work of the team of Constituency #33, and all the people who came from across the island to help us….thank you.
“Today, we hit the ground running and start working, because the people deserve a working representative, and they deserve a voice who will fight for our people…”
In a statement after this evening’s bye-election, OBA candidate Georgia Marshall said: “Let me thank the voters of Sandys South for their welcoming reception on the doorstep.
“It has been one of the most humbling and enriching experiences of my life. It has been an honour and a privilege to run as the OBA candidate in Sandys South.
“Despite losing, I will continue to address local and national issues so that we can continue making a positive difference in the lives of all Bermudians – supporting job growth and working to ensure safe communities.”
Ms Marshall thanked her bye-election team and the OBA members for their support, encouragement and assistance and vowed to continue supporting the Government in their efforts.
She added: “Let me especially thank my husband, Tim and all of our family and friends who have been so supportive and encouraging.”
This bye-election followed the resignation of Terry Lister, who was originally elected under the PLP, but later left the party to sit as an Independent.
The OBA won the 2012 General Election with 19 seats to the PLP’s 17, however when Mr. Lister resigned from the PLP last year it changed the breakdown in the House to 19 OBA, 16 PLP and 1 Independent, and with Mr Simmons victory, the House now reverts back to 19-17.
This result continues Sandys South’s strong history of voting PLP, with the area having elected the PLP candidate[s] in the 2012, 2007, 2003. 1998, 1993, 1989, 1985, 1983, 1980, 1976, and 1972 General Elections.

Huge congratulations to Jamahl ,his lovely wife and partner Sherrie and their children .
From Coffee and the entire family !
and so sealing the fate of the plp!
All the way PLP!! PLP all the way.. Congrats Jamhal. Now show the PBA how it’s done. To put the people (here) first.
OBA puts the people first. Everything they are doing is putting the people first for the short, medium and long term.
Who put the people first by spending 24million instead of 4m recently????? hmmm
Who put the people first with faith based tourism.
You think the PLP put people first.
How many of them swarmed 33 for this election, how many of them normally there ? They put power and themselves first, not you.
Congratulations to Jamahl.
I wouldn’t worry too much if I were OBA ; only a matter of time before he’s on your side of the isle. He wouldn’t be being himself if he didn’t cross over. To quote a regular blogger, “sad but true”
Congratulations Jamhal and congratulations Somerset for having faith in the PLP… Not let’s get to work…Bermuda for Bermudians..
OBA will win the next general election for sure. PLP is becoming more radical and alienating the middle
I must say Mrs Marshall portrays much class for her well wishes. I wish more politicians would take note.
Congratulations Jamahl!!!!!!!! To achieve a good government, a good, effective oppoposition is necessary. I only wish for the PLP to attain more seats in Parliament so there could be the ultimate democracy. It is apparent that the OBA are weak and grasping at any initiatives presented to them without research. This is dangerous and could further erode Bemuda as we know it. OBA is not ready as a government, like it or not an effective opposition is necessary.
Thanks for my laugh of the day…ultimate democracy. Riches for members of the elite, homes in Martha’s Vineyard and $2B in debt for the rest of us
