Meeting For Bus Operators On Friday Evening

March 4, 2015

There will be a meeting for the Bus Operators & Allied Workers Division at 7.00pm on Friday [Mar 6] at BIU headquarters, with the agenda to be “cancelled runs” and “all overtime for time and one half.”

Bus cancellations have been an ongoing issue lately, with multiple runs cancelled on a daily basis.

Last month representatives from the Transport Ministry and BIU met to discuss the disruption in bus service, and Transport Minister Shawn Crockwell has said there are 10 bus operators out on long term sick leave, and the department has implemented a ban on overtime, so the combination is impacting the scheduling.

The poster said, “There will be a meeting for the Bus Operators & Allied Workers Division on Friday March 6, 2015 from 7:00 pm sharp at B.I.U. headquarters. Agenda. Cancelled runs. All overtime for time and one half.”

  1. Lord Lucan says:

I wonder how well attended this will be given all the sickness.

    • Mockingjay says:

They better come right or we ALL will have a meeting.

      • jt says:

Those who called this work to rule called it correctly.

      • Jus Wonderin' says:

So scared we’re shaking in our shoes lmfao. go for it! YOUR MARCHES SOLVE NOTHING! You realize you hurt yourselves too when you do that? Guess you can’t see the bigger picture…

    • The Truth Speaker says:

      Rename agenda:

      - How to best screw the Bermuda public so that school children can’t get to school, their Ag Show is cancelled, and we, the BIU members, don’t lose a cent.

After all, it is the rich man that needs to pay for all of us…

      …right?

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

I have suggested this before, 1 paid sick day every 3 weeks unless the employee is on long term sick leave or the extra days are certified by a government vetted doctor. Any additional sick days in that period are unpaid with the employee being put on an on-call list to make up the day at regular time.

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

      How true and LMAO!!!

  2. PBanks says:

Sort it out guys. The public needs a reliable, efficient bus service, especially seniors and school children.

  3. Terry says:

Well they won’t all be there regardless of illness/sickness.

Guess there will be no buses running at this time.

I am sure the BIU will inform us.

    Maybe Laverne.

  4. Yahoo says:

If they can’t drag their sorry a**** it to work during normal hours, I’m doubtful they will make it for 7pm on a Friday evening.

    • Creamy says:

Yeah, but don’t forget it’s the weekend. That’s when they ave a miraculous recovery for two days.

    • enough says:

Oh yeh, they’ll be there to have a party once more. Privatise the busses and see how long they last with their silly tactics. People don’t have any sympathy anymore, get back to work and do what you’re paid to do.

  5. Hey says:

It seems like they get amusement out of seeing those who really rely on public transportation suffer. These bus cancellations have been happening much too often lately.

  6. hmmm says:

    NO OVERTIME.

  7. hmmm says:

Why don’t you just tell them to get back to work and do the job they recieve a fair days pay for Furbert

Tell them to stop dirty games holding Bermuda bus travellers hostage.

  8. TonyC says:

So what they’re effectively saying now is “we’ll carry on being sick unless you pay us time and a half”.

I know the BIU has to get the best deal for its members, but at the expense of the public and Bermuda generally?

    Absolute disgrace of a Union.

  9. aceboy says:

    Time and one half?

    Did Paula write that?

  10. hmmm says:

Furbert can’t get the workers to do their job for their fair days pay.

You created this mess Furbert you clean it up.

  11. stevie says:

PTB is a joke.Mismanaged. people off for various reasons & training drivers when there is a shortgae? Seems very much like the elevator isn’t going to the top floor. Priviatisation of essential transport needs to happen. No more “We apologise for the incovenience caused”. I wonder,as mentioned by others, how many of the incompassitated drivers will turn up? PTB stands for “Poor Terrible Bunch”

  12. Sky Pilot says:

Hopefully these people including the biu have seen the damming writing on the wall and have finally figured that time is running out for the PTP/biu and that many want to see the back of them!

People are NOT going to stand idle while their children are not able to go to school while these guys are getting paid alot of money to do NOTHING.

PRIVATIZE NOW and break the stranglehold of the PTP/biu.

  13. bermy Bud says:

I just dont know why mini buses dont pick up the hustle! Get the cancelled routes schedule and sit and wait at those locations! I wish i had one!

    • TonyC says:

That’s great, but how would they make any money?

    • Jus Wonderin' says:

party bus n mini bus in one…

    • Triangle Drifter says:

The mini buses should be jumping all over this. Let them get together & combine their services & in no time there will not be any need for PTB. They will have plenty time to be sick, go on vacation, attend meetings, do their other part time jobs etc.

  14. say it aint so says:

I blame the unions for current situation in Bermuda. Greed, greed and more greed!!!!

  15. say it aint so says:

PRIVATIZE!!!!! There are people who would love to have a job!!!!!

  16. Frank says:

Lets hope that the Agenda reference the overtime is that they will vote to work for straight time or continue as is! I hope the drivers vote to work for straight time or let the ones that want to work for straight time work.Think positive of the outcome of the meeting on friday night. We might all be surprised!

  17. Frank says:

When does the new summer bus schedual come out? Maybe we will see lots of changes that there will be no need for these shortages by reduceing service to routes? We will see

  18. boogiedownproductions says:

Firstly most of you bloggers are a JOKE
Why is the UNION always at fault?
Management ( Minister)said they have long term sickness, and buses out of service and they wasn’t offering OT.
How the Union be at fault for that?.
Oops dumb me yes Union is the Management at DPT and do what they like.
It’s good to hear that Management and the Union have come to the table and by this notice have seemed to reach some sort of an agreement.
It’s the start of our Tourist season and they
need to have those buses on the move.
It’s time we stop bashing and start pulling together as we don’t realize the damage we are doing just by simple DUMB blogging

  19. James Rego says:

Thank you BIU for holding this meeting at a convenient time.

  20. aceboy says:

7pm on a Friday? That’s the time when they want to slip something past most of the members who will not attend because their weekend has started. When Mr. Furbert wants something done, it’s 10am on a Monday. Then the party starts, drums are banged, kids stay home from school and we all get inconvenienced AGAIN.

  21. MAKE MY DAY says:

These people attend MORE meetings than work… And they wonder why the transport system is in such a mess!!

WAKE UP BDA… AND COME INTO THE REAL WORLD!!

  22. stunned... says:

confused…will the biu be giving out ‘flu shots? if drivers are genuinely sick shouldnt they see a physician?

  23. Ed Case says:

Hello! These poor bus drivers are sick! How can they possibly get to a meeting when they are sick? I mean, if they could go, wouldn’t they be subject to possible discipline – because they would appear to be well enough to go to a meeting – but too sick to go to work?

Please spare a thought for these poorly bus drivers – I know how I feel when I’ve got a nasty tummy bug.

I do have some Vicks Vapour rub and a bit of Castor oil if anyone can pick it up at my place in St G. Of course I don’t know how you’ll get there. Buses are off again.

  24. Help Me with My Math says:

Chris Furbert still thinks that it’s reasonable to ask for time and a half? That’s your idea of helping this island Chris? Not even the suggestion of overtime at straight time?

These greedy individuals would never make it in the private sector that’s why they have to hold on to that government job for dear life!

Your time will come guys. PRIVATIZE!

  25. Y-Gurl says:

I’m happy to see these clowns have taken blocked toilets off the agenda, what on earth would they do if they had to work in the real world,…not very well I expect.

  26. watcher55 says:

7:00pm SHARP!…hope the bus is on time
