“A female informed police that as she ran along Cavendish Road near Lane Hill, shortly after 6:00 a.m. today, she observed a light skinned male, wearing a fluorescent jacket standing underneath a light pole near Lane Hill. As she approached the male reportedly exposed himself to her.

“The BPS is seeking the public’s assistance with the investigation into this matter and urges anyone who may have been in the area of Cavendish Road between Lane Hill and Hibiscus Lane, Pembroke between 6:00 a.m. and 6:25 a.m. today, Thursday 7thJanuary, 2020 and may have any information on this incident, to please call 211 or the main police number 295-0011.

“Meanwhile with the hours of darkness starting earlier and ending later, the BPS provides the following safety advice to those who choose to run in the evening or early morning.

  • Always tell someone where you are going.
  • Stay on well-travelled and well-lit roads. Don’t take shortcuts through, poorly lit areas, etc.
  • If possible, run with a dog, a group or at least one other person.
  • Bring your phone.
  • Do not wear jewellery that will attract attention.
  • If someone looks shady to you, cross the street or go the other way.
  • Vary your routes. Don’t be predictable.
  • Know where you’re going. Looking confused and lost can make you a target.
  • Avoid wearing headphones/earbuds and don’t be distracted. Perpetrators specifically look for people who aren’t 100 percent aware of their surroundings.
  • Trust your gut. If something or someone doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
  • If you’re heckled, try to remain calm. Getting angry or entering into a dispute could escalate the situation.

“Everyone should be able to enjoy outdoors and exercise wherever and whenever they choose to. We encourage you to report to us any incidents of harassment or threatening behaviour, even if you cannot identify the perpetrator.

“Anyone who thinks it’s ok to harass and intimidate others should be aware – your behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Rather than a nine point set of instructions to victims which include not being alone, what not to wear, or not to get angry if you’re heckled, why don’t the PBS give just one point to the ( very few ) men who heckle, expose themselves, and sexually assault women and girls? Number one – Stop abusing women and girls.

And then, how about one for the police? Number one – Catch and arrest the very few men who abuse women and girls.

    Simples!

FYI, BPS, when heckled, I never ever ignore it.To be silent is to be complicit and to condone abuse. It is possible to swear loudly whilst jogging.
