Tropical Storm Kate “Not A Threat At This Time”

Tropical Storm Kate is “not a threat to Bermuda at this time”, the Bermuda Weather Service said, with its closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hours forecast to be 511 nm to the east at 3am on Friday [Sept 3], with the BWS noting that “this system may move closer to Bermuda after this time period depending upon its track.”

The latest forecast from the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “At 500 AM AST [0900 UTC], the center of Tropical Storm Kate was located near latitude 23.0 North, longitude 50.9 West. Kate is moving toward the north near 5 mph [7 km/h], and this general motion should continue through today. A northwestward motion is forecast to begin tonight and continue into Wednesday.

“Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph [65 km/h] with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next few days.

“Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles [75 km]from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1006 mb [29.71 inches].”
