Young Child Dies After Car Goes Overboard

[Updated] The police have confirmed that a woman and two children were in a vehicle that went overboard this morning [March 11], and all three have been taken to hospital.

A police spokesperson said, “First responders, including police officers, are currently at Shark Hole in Hamilton parish regarding a car that went overboard around 9:23am today [Friday, 11th March 2022]

“Details are limited at this time. However, it is believed that three occupants – one adult female and two children – were in the vehicle when it went overboard.

“All three were extracted from the vehicle and have been taken to hospital. A statement from the scene is anticipated shortly.”

Update 11.00am: A BFRS spokesperson said, “At 9:23am Friday March 11, 2022 BFRS dispatch received a report of a vehicle Overboard with 3 occupants at Sharkhole Hill Hamilton Parish.

“Appliances from Clearwater Station and Hamilton Station responded with 8 personnel. On arrival to the incident fire crews saw a white car in the water. Firefighters immediately entered the water in an attempt to remove the occupants from the vehicle.

“The victims were removed from the vehicle and immediately transported to KEMH via ambulance. The cause of the incident is under investigation by the Bermuda Police Service.”

Update 11.09am: The police have now confirmed the extremely sad news that a young child has died, they said “the younger of the two toddlers has been pronounced dead.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police Antoine Daniels said, “A number of courageous people that were on site – some of the workers in the area, Works & Engineering workers, and a number of other road users jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue the members of the vehicle; they were able to get the three members of the vehicle out.”

Update 11.54am: A police spokesperson said, “Sadly, Assistant Commissioner of Police Antoine Daniels confirmed at the scene that one of the young children extracted from the car that went overboard at Shark Hole in Hamilton parish has since been pronounced dead.

“It is also understood that the adult female driver and the other young child involved received non-life threatening injuries. Numerous members of the public assisted first responders with the rescue effort.

“Traffic diversions remain in effect in the Shark Hole, Hamilton parish area. Currently motorists are being rerouted at Paynters Road and Wilkinson Avenue, while inquiries continue at the scene regarding the circumstances of this tragic incident.

“Any witnesses are encouraged to call 211 or the main police number 295-0011 as soon as possible.”

Update 12.30pm: Shadow Transport Minister Susan Jackson said, “Today’s tragic accident is deeply saddening as we mourn the loss of a precious young life. The One Bermuda Alliance extends its deepest condolences to the infant’s family and we pray for a speedy recovery for the injured family members.

“Thank you to the caring citizens and rescuers who were willing to place themselves in harm’s way without a moment’s hesitation.”

Update 2.40pm: A police spokesperson said, “Motorists are reminded that traffic diversions remain in effect in the Shark Hole, Hamilton parish area – and are encouraged to use alternate routes until further notice.

“A crane recently arrived at the scene to recover the car involved in this morning’s tragic incident.

“Therefore, road users are still being rerouted at Paynters Road and Wilkinson Avenue, while inquiries continue.

“Once again, any witnesses are encouraged to call 211 or the main police number 295-0011 as soon as possible.”

Update 3.40pm: A police spokesperson said, “Traffic diversions are no longer in effect in the Shark Hole, Hamilton parish area.

“The Bermuda Police Service thanks the motoring public for their patience and cooperation.

“Inquiries continue and the appeal for witnesses is ongoing.

“Anyone with information that can assist the investigation is now encouraged to call Constable Dennis Joell on 717-2221, or e-mail djoell@bps.bm, as soon as possible.”

Update 9.28pm: A Government spokesperson said, “This evening, the Minister of National Security, the Hon. Renee Ming, JP, MP, shared a message of condolence following today’s road traffic accident in Hamilton Parish.

Minister Ming said, “I extend my deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the young child who we tragically lost today.

“This is such a sad day for their family and an emotionally challenging day for all of Bermuda.

“My hope is that in the days ahead, our community will come together and embrace this family with the love and support they need to help them navigate through this truly devastating time.

“I wish to thank the members of the public, who were on the scene, specifically, the personnel from the Ministry of Public Works, and the members of the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service and the Bermuda Police Services for their heroic efforts.

“As the BPS continue to gather information about what transpired, I ask that anyone who may have information about today’s incident to please contact the Police.”
