Two PLP Candidates To Be Selected Tonight

September 21, 2011

Two more constituencies will elect their PLP candidate this evening [Sept.21], with both Southampton East and Southampton West hosting candidate selection meetings tonight.

Last night the PLP selected two candidates, with both constituencies seeing the sitting MP ousted in favour of a challenger. Rolfe Commissiong was selected over incumbent Ashfield Devent in Pembroke South East, and in Hamilton South Diallo Rabain was selected over Darius Tucker – who won his seat under the UBP.

Constituency #29 Southampton East will be holding their candidate selection meeting at 7:00pm this evening at the New Apostle Church in Southampton. Speaker of the House Stanley Lowe presently holds the seat, having won 558 – 263 against the UBP’s Douglas Decouto in the last general election.

Although not confirmed by official sources, both Minister of Health Zane DeSilva and Former National Security Minister Lt. Col. David Burch are considered likely to challenge Mr Lowe.

In April of this year, the Colonel said, “I want to run in 29, so I am concentrating on that. I will work my district, if the branch selects me, then I will be a candidate, if they don’t, then I will work for the for the person they do select. That’s how it happens.”

Constituency #32 Southampton West will also be holding their candidate selection meeting this evening, taking place at 7:30pm at the Dalton E. Tucker Primary School in Southampton. The PLP’s Randy Horton is the incumbent, besting the UBP’s Charlie Swan 629 – 366 in 2007.  Although not officially confirmed, lawyer Marc Daniels is considered a likely challenger to Mr Horton.

  1. Bermudian says:

Marc Daniels Esq. all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Just what we needed!! Marc, keep your level head and do not start acting cute tomorrow morning after the win, keep shaking hands and picking up Clients as if you just got called to the Bar.

    Dear (Honourable) MP Horton,
Please be graceful in defeat, Marc and his generation have stood by whilst your peer group have let this whole thing fall flat. Time for you to move over and give the mentoring and guidance that your era of MPs keeps saying is important for Bermuda’s youth.

  2. Terry says:

  3. Jus' Askin' says:

We are definitely living in historical times ;-)

  4. John Stratham says:

Other than Marc being 33 or so, good looking and a lawyer, what makes him a good candidate for an MP? Or is that all you need? Oh wait. Yes, that’s probably all he needs. Deuces.

  5. ella says:

OH NO They gave the seat to Commissiong! That’s it PLP you have definitely lost my vote

  6. Old Timer says:

    @JohnStratham

so you are saying that because Marc Daniels hasnt sat in Parliament doing nothing for 10+ years that he is unqualified.

You people make me laugh, do you know what a short tail or long tail line of business is? Better still a side-car………….I would strongly recommend you jump into Randy’s car with him tonight and both of you can ride off to the Newport Room to talk about the past, the Incumbent MPs in both political camps are incapable of addressing Bermuda’s 2011 – 2020 problems, its time to change gears with a new team who are willing to be accountable and not talk race race race (exclusing Rolf that is).

John, make Randy take you to Parliament for lunch before he gives up his seat in Dec/Jan – they have a nice room at the back where you can have a great buffet set up.

  7. SUCKERS!! says:

    Whoooo cares!!

  8. drunkenUrsula says:

  9. Shut Yo Mouth... says:

Randy Horton you deserve the pension that’ll be coming your way tomorrow .

    • Fed Up Bermudian says:

Um, Shut, please, for God’s sake, tell me that was sarcasm. It really bothers me that my tax dollars are helping support someone who’s a bully, who has no idea what the word ‘statesman’ means, who takes delight in running white people out of their jobs and screwing with peoples’ reputations…seriously?? He deserves something, but not that pension!!!! And, all of this, while a mother of five gets to go to jail because she can’t afford to pay her bills??? If it were me, I’d be ashamed to collect that salary knowing how many are truly in need.

  10. Oh no says:

I canno believe the choices that older black bermudians make, and then we borrow money to educate our young people but want to sideline them indefinately

Selecting Horton is a poor choice

    • Real Talk(original) says:

If that’s the case it sounds like more young Bermudians need to join the PLP and have their voices heard at these branch elections, no?
