Cannonier: “This Press Conference Is Over”

December 3, 2012

[Updated w/PLP response] Saying “this press conference is over,” Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier abruptly ended his participation in a press conference this afternoon [Dec 3].

The meeting was originally held to discuss crime, and after Jeff Baron addressed the media the floor was opened to questions.

Ayo Johnson asked Mr Cannonier about the lack of clarification from people the document that recently surfaced was addressed to. Mr Cannonier said: “Let me be clear about these reports or documents, they have nothing to do with the party I lead – the One Bermuda Alliance.”

After telling a reporter who tried to interrupt with a question “we will end this conference if you don’t listen,” Mr Cannonier said: “I will not stand by and allow the One Bermuda Alliance to be attacked for something it has nothing to do with.”

“We have got to move beyond these kinds of things that continue to divide this country and I will no longer allow the speculation and the rumours to continue on when they have nothing to do with Craig Cannonier…the leader of the One Bermuda Alliance.”

“Some report that existed 4 years ago…it has nothing to do with the One Bermuda Alliance. It is now time Bermuda for us to come together,” continued Mr Cannonier.

“And to those black entrepreneurs and the middle class who are looking for opportunity, I say to you that the One Bermuda Alliance is committed to working with the private sector of this country, to bringing us all together…that we all can enjoy social and economic equity for everyone.

“So with that in mind, this press conference is over,” said Mr Cannonier. Mr Johnson tried to ask another question, however Mr Cannonier left the room exiting through a side door and said, “You can ask questions of these others if you wish to. Thank you very much.”

“They can ask questions in private if they want,” Mr Cannonier told Bob Richards and Jeff Baron. “But the press conference is over.”

Update 2.19pm: When asked why the press conference was shut down today, an OBA spokesperson said: “Mr. Cannonier closed out the press conference this afternoon when it became clear that a reporter’s questioning focused on a matter involving the United Bermuda Party. Mr. Cannonier said he would not entertain any further questions on a matter that had nothing to do with the One Bermuda Alliance.”

Update 3.39pm: The PLP is presently holding a press conference, and former UBP Leader and now PLP MP Wayne Furbert is confirming the existence of the “secret document”. We will have the video of that press conference later this afternoon. [Update: Video posted here]

Update 5.17pm: A PLP spokesperson said the footage of Mr Cannonier “storming out of a press conference is extremely troubling.” They also noted that Mr. Cannonier said “some report that existed four years ago,” when last week he said the report was a “fabrication.”

The full statement from the PLP is below:

Today’s footage of the OBA’s Craig Cannonier storming out of a press conference is extremely troubling. Bermudians need to ask themselves whether Mr. Cannonier has the right temperament to lead our country.

Bermudians deserve answers to the very serious questions that have been raised about the OBA. For Mr. Cannonier to fly off the handle and storm out of a press conference, abandoning his colleagues, makes you wonder what does he have to hide?

Several sources have confirmed that the report exists and said that “black surrogates” should have been used in place of white candidates and that they blamed their 2007 election loss in certain constituencies on “downscale” and “less educated” voters.

What we found most troubling, however, is that in today’s press conference, Mr. Cannonier said, and we quote, “some report that existed four years ago.” Last week, Mr. Cannonier said the report was a “fabrication.”

Now, he is saying that the report existed four years ago? Which is it? Did the report exist or was it a fabrication? It’s time for Craig Cannonier, Glen Smith, Michael Dunkley and Grant Gibbons to come clean.”

Update 8.49pm: Michael Dunkley and Dr Grant Gibbons have commented on the document, their statements are posted here.

  1. Young Bermudian says:

Good for him! I’m of the Medias bullying. The media was extremely rude to interrupt the Opposition Leader and needs to show more respect. Let’s MOVE FOWARD!

    • Undecided Voter says:

You would like to move forward. Why the hell didn’t he asnwer the damned question!

Why is Dunkley, Gibbons, and Smith SILENT!

      • Black Soil says:

Meanwhile the PLP is driving all of us into the ground.

        • Oh this is Funny says:

Do you really think that we are being driven into the groud…

          Really… C’mon.

          • Chart says:

Yes, the Bermuda economy is being driven into the ground.

            • Black Soil says:

              Our future is being ransacked!!!!!

              • Hired says:

For all those ‘bloggers’ out there: be aware that the PLP have been paying quite a few people to provide somewhat coherent arguments against the OBA, also saying things like “I won’t be supporting the OBA anymore” to make you question your own judgment.

Of course, as you all know, this ‘secret plan’ business is all to detract from issues that actually affect Bermudians from all walks of life, and to reinforce racial hatred by labeling and create a sensationalized media frenzy to sway those voters who may have been ‘undecided’.

            • ABM says:

I see u only read and beleive whats in the media outlets. Try digging a little deeper next time.

          • Luis Usarez says:

Er, you might think its funny. Unemployment, gang crime, poor schooling, businesses closing.

I actually think that’s tragic, and that’s what the PLP have done.

So yes, driven into the ground is absolutely approriate, and if its so damn funny, perhaps you can explain to me why?

            • OnlyThe Truth says:

Youre a complete imbicile if you believe thats the truth…

Bermuda experienced the largest spurt in the international business presence under the PLP government.

Dont know if you’ve been awake but the entire western world is experiencing the problems we’re having right now. And its because of something a lot bigger than our petty, small-time local politics.

You want to be foolish enough to buy into the OBA(UBP) hype that a vote for change is a vote for recovery they by all means. But I can assure you that they are the party more likely to sell off Bermuda to the demands of outside interests.

It is still a party representing Bermuda’s elite and thats they relationship they have with outside investors. If you thing all of a sudden that you, the average Bermudian, can relate with that type of person simply because they have some “relatable” characters on the front lines, then youre in for a ride you wont see coming..

              • Y.N.W.A. says:

You’re the one that sounds like an imbicile. Do some research, our debt skyrocketed long before the global recession that hit in 2008. Maybe it has to do with that, what was it, $800,000,000 that went missing with absolutely NO investigation.

Cannot wait for election day, so I can help rid this country of it’s biggest problem- The P.L.P.

                • OnlyThe Truth says:

Every western nations debt level was surging pre-2008, as well as individuals. IT WAS BEFORE THE CRASH! People and countries leveraged up because it was viewed as manageable even through the eyes of many of the lenders. Look how many people here did it for the purchase of overpriced homes, condos and other “things” that kept them up with the Jones/Joannas…

And I’m sorry, but you if you expect any impartial party to beleive 800m went “missing” without so much as causing any reprisal from “all the Queens men” then I have nothing further to say to you. But at the same time I cant blame you in a country were misinformation becomes fact so long as its repeated enough.

        • Sharon C says:

This is really unstatesman like. I won’t be supporting the OBA anymore because I now feel used. Why do they feel they have the right to use us?

          • street wise says:

Actually, I was really impressed with Craig… He

            • street wise says:

              Damn iPad!

Actually I was impressed with Craig! He was coming from his heart. Craig was pissed off, and rightly so. The UBP has nothing to do with the OBA. And the so-called secret report is bogus and obviously a plp plant.

There are much more important issues to discuss, rather than continually dealing with the divisive plp smear campaign against the OBA. The plp have nothing to brag about, so that’s all they have. As plp government PERFORMANCE is dismal, to say the least!

The press was rude to attempt to interrupt Mr Cannonier in mid-sentence, twice. And as for Wayne Furbert, what credibility does he have? None, he is just another opportunistic plp joker. A TURN-COAT in reality!

              • Do the Math says:

How the “F” can you say the UBP has nothing to do with the OBA. Look at the damm friggin mirror and all the faces of the OBA are the same UBP elected MP from the 2007 election. Then to add insult to injury, the new surrogates are young Blacks being used in non winnable seats plus add that to the face that Michael Dunkley stays behind the scenes and directs all OBA traffic OH & lets not forget Donte Hunte, Shawn Crockwell and Profession lieayer Pettingill went off & formed the BDA THEN kissed and made up in time for the 2012 election.

UBP dna is all over OBA. Not supporting nor voting OBA anymore

              • The U.B.P has everything to do with the O.B.A and only a fool cant see it,the main stake holders in front and behind close doors are all long time supporters and former board member and leaders of the former U.B.P.so how can Mr Cannonier claim that he as a front man who has temporary lime light not connected to those who suggest to who him what he needs to say.

I dont like the likes of where I see this country or the state we are in ,neither do I agree with many things the present administration had done to put us in this position, along with the last administration who I think would go down as the worst we have ever had but I do not like a bold face liar either and this is what I feel we are being handed in this press conference,a bold face lie and the media has every right to press the buttons and demand the truth and should not stop here but pressure all of them till they break.

          • Angela says:

You think PLP is not using Zane and Smith ha ha

            • Who done it says:

No I think Zane and the good dr are using the Bermuda

            • OnlyThe Truth says:

Actually Zane was using the PLP… Which they did not mind as for some strange reason whites have always had a hard time openly supporting the party. What does that say about the racial dynamics of this island when the “black party” has always be receptive to the other race with little to no avail historically…

          • Out of flight says:

You got it. Thought they were genuine???? No. What they were doing was based on that report. If they were men of integrity they would have destroyed it from day one. But they don’t really care what we think so they kept it. But we are NOT stupid. We now have the evidence that they think we are stupid so we cannot support them.

        • young mother says:

Black soil no baby we are doing that to our selves do what you need to up left your self let them lead the country ….. cant NO BODY HOLD YA HAND and wipe ya A$$ too

        • S.O.L. says:

if so then john swan would of not built that building if he didn’t no how much business is coming our way, n that’s a fact from his right hand man who told me hisself from New York ” i hope Bermud’a ready for the amount of business coming this way” .Do u no y our premier signed all those TI’s…do your research we’re( Bermuda) are in the brotherhood with the world banks…..Lesson #2 after you hit rock bottom which way do you go….I’ll send you that bill in the mail for that lesson…”UP”…P.L.P all the way…..

      • swing voter says:

But he did answer the question …. unlike Ewart who deflected by responding to the effect ” that’s a plantation question”….you ppl make me laugh. Who cares what the report says, I’m sure there are reports on the other side that have similar disgusting language. I just want my country fixed. The PLP just ain’t got it.

        • Argosy says:

If the document is “secret”, how come Flip Flop Furburt claims to know about it?

Ask FFF if it contains any “N” words – I mean the words used by Burch and DeSilva…..

Does it contain the words “plantation”, “racist dog”…

          RUN ON YOUR RECORD!

        • Tired of the bull says:

What do you mean by “you people”!!!!

      • Blurt says:

Nothing to do with the OBA. Nuff said. Good strong leadership, gave the gallery a warning, and then delivered on his promise…. Strong Leader.

        • Oh this is Funny says:

You can’t really be serious. you have to answer questions.

          The OBA hase the same:

          Office staff
          Computers
          People
          Funders

as the UBP.. Why/how are they different?

          • Swing Voter 2 says:

They have a different platform than the UBP. Different Party – enough said. The same computers? Are they still running Windows 2000 or something? What a bizarre thing to say! They wear suits too!

The same funders? Do you have a list of all the funders from the UBP era and the OBA’s current funders? If so, please share this info!

There are members of the PLP who were members of the UBP as well. It’s a tiny island with only a select few who are committed enough to be politicians – of course there is going to be a crossover.

This whole attempt by the PLP to smear the image of the OBA by referring to them as the new UBP is not a strong foundation – are we going to have to hear about this every election? If so, why do we even have a two party system? It is time to move on – there are way more important things to debate than this. I must say that one of the main issues that I am personally interested in is crime rate… I wish more was spoken about this then some stupid document made before Cannonier was even involved in politics.

          • S.O.L. says:

Thank You, Thank You, n Thank You, n we P.L.P supporters are suppose to be the nieve 1′s……

        • Sharon C says:

blurt – everything to do with the OBA – its the OBA history – break off start a new party = BDA; combine both parties and start another party = OBA; push dunkley to the back; find a new black leader = Craig. if it quacks like a duck its the oba ducks and ducklings. all to do with the organizational dealings of the OBA. nuff said

          • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

@ Sharon C: Have to correct you here. The BDA was not started by UBP break-away members. The OBA was formed when the breakaway UBP members negotiated with the BDA to form one party.

For the record, in another report, we have Wayne Furbert stating that although he was made leader of the UBP in 2006, a year before this document was created, he believes he was a “surrogate.” So, the UBP had “surrogates” before they were advised to have “surrogates” in order to win the election, but they still lost! So much for that!

Now can we focus on the things that really matter, like crime and the abysmal state of our education system, and the tanked tourism figures, and the loss of IB, and the increasing bankruptcies, and the overheated rental market, and the land give-aways, and ugly, unsellable Grand Atlantic, and oh-my-gosh! the incredible debt we are in, just to mention a few of the issues that need attention????

            • Unbeeeeelievable!! says:

              Amen Pastor!

            • UBP member says:

Pastor Syl: Donte Hunt, Mark Pettingill and Shawn Crockwell = BDA MPS right? All 3 were elected UBP MP in 2007 right? hence the BDA was started by UBP breakaways … i rest my case.

        • SHANNON says:

          lol. REALLY!

        • S.O.L. says:

has a lot to do with O.B.A….the old guards run them

      • SHAME ON CRAIG says:

GIVE ME A BREAK – IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE WAY FORWARD OF THE way the BDA AND THE OBA came into being the opposition…

CRAIG NEEDS TO COME CLEAN. WE ARE NOT SUPPORTING THEM ANYMORE. I’M NOT!

TYPICAL – GIBBONS AND DUNKLEY HIDING – THE PEOPLE OF BERMUDA NEEDS TO KNOW THE TRUTH.

      • SHANNON says:

Excuse me! Where you not listening? The document said for them to shut-up.

      • BLUE says:

BECAUSE THEY ARE THE OBA,OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION

      • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

Because the question had nothing to do with him or his party – and the press conference was held to talk about an entirely different issue – or are you too thick to understand.

The PLP won’t answer questions asked of them that they have answers to and are responsible for.

        Here’s one

Where is our $600 million in “unaccounted money”!!! anyone care to answer!

      • Concern Citizen says:

If the information of the Secret File is so important that we must get to the truth. Then all the other questionable transactions by PLP also need to be answers. We need to see the books on all those over budget projects. No Bid contract. I want to see those documents. I guess there a lot silence about this subject as well.

I always wonder how Furbert rose so quickly in PLP coming from UBP. I guess this was his contribution for his portfolio. Many PLP faithful were passover but I guess they didn’t have the Secret File.

      • decided voter says:

The questions being asked had nothing to do with the press conference or the OBA
If things from the past want to get talked about then lets talk about berkley and how trucks would drop off pallets of blocks only for a next truck to come in ten minutes later and pick them up to take to another job, or how the tcd job got given to the ex premieres buddy instead of properly dealt with.
If you can’t see that we Bermudians have been robbed blind by our government and they still get voted back in then we are going to be worse then Jamacia very soon.
Atleast have the guts to say ur decided, your stance from your comments is clear

    • Webster says:

I was so impressed with Craig at the news conference he sure showed his leadership qualities.
I would vote for him in heartbeat,he spoke from the heart no BS .

      • Oh this is Funny says:

So, people are not supposed to answer questions. Thats a good start. I can see it now, Premier Cannonier, what do you think about this issue of importance…. “This press conference is over”

        Crazy

        • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

@ Oh! this is funny: Oh! you were OK with “That’s a plantation question”? Or deafening silence as a response to legitimate questions that impact you and me as Bermudians, posed in the House of Assembly?

          • plp4life says:

hayward you and kemp better not darken my door step ever agian im changing my vote to david burt.

A party that gained it’s position by rats jumping ship.
RESPECT? OBA has none for me or any other real Bermudian.
OBA is a BS party ;-)

      • Blurt says:

OBA is there for the benefit of Bermuda and Bermuuans, I guess you don’t qualify as either, otherwise you wouldn’t dismiss them so readily.

        • Oh this is Funny says:

How the hell did you come up with that?

I don’t think the OBA are evil, but I do think they are the UBP and I know exactly what they are about!

          • street wise says:

Exactly, Dr Evil is the evil one. But the BDA & OBA have nothing to do with with the defunct UBP. No matter how much the plp attempt to smear them. And, trust me, you do not know exactly what the OBA are all about. What you know about is just a false PERCEPTION created by the plp to fool people like you. But you know that, right?

            • OnlyThe Truth says:

Youre a complete sucker if you beleive anything you just said… You really think the elite commercial interests driving the UBP’s agenda in the past just vanished into thin air? You really think its that far fetched the OBA via BDA via UBP is the product of a, pretty simple actually, strategy to secure a traditionally unattainable segment of the voting populous?? You think stuff like this has never happened before and that Bermudians are just waaaaayy too clever to be susceptible to it??

Ah Gibbons, Crockwell, Jackson, Richards, Pettingale, Barritt, Dunkley, Hunt, Atherden….. shall I go on about the people aka ‘rats’ that jumped ship.
Or are you saying OBA is ‘the same ship’ as UBP’s, just with a different name?

          • decided voter says:

lol, no he’s saying that if you call the people who left the Ubp for the Oba rats then you are also calling the people who left the Ubp for the Plp rats. If you don’t agree with that then you have yourself a little double standard problem

      • Argosy says:

        “Rats jumping ship…”

That’s rich from a party with a rat Tourism Minister!

        • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

How quickly they seem to forget about the Waynes, the Jamals and others that used to be part of the old UBP. This lot are desperate for distractions but not smart enough to look in the mirror first!

      • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

So you respect a government that has:

thrown away money on countles projects like Berkely, TCD, Cruise ship Terminalto name a few.
Taken businesses from people and handed them over to others: Bermuda Cement Company!
Lied to everyone in the last elect ” We HAD TO DECIEVE YOU!
Thrown away money on Concerts, destroyed and type of tourism we had and forgot to sign cruise ship contract meaning we will have 12 less ships here next year.
Gave money to “Faith Based Torism” in good faith. How did that work out.
Gave away Bermudas hotels: 99 year lease on Coco Reef.
Destroyed the economy and pushed away the internaional companies by raising costs and trying to tell them who could work for them.
Made a mess of our transportation system – How many buses and ferries couldnt be fixed.
Has $600 million in “unaccounted for money”. Where is it?
Responsible for the worst economy, highest debt, this country has seen in modern times.

    • Liars go to Hell says:

Craig was caught in a lie. Last week he said said report was false. When presented with the original he ran and hid. This is not the kinda leader we need. Dunkley and Gibbons should be out there explaining what happened. Gary Moreano asked Kim Swan a question and he answered yes. What did you all expect him to lie like Craig has?

    • young mother says:

Ya just Sad that little outburst of yours is something my 3 yr old would do when he is cought in a lye Sr. you are just the color they need in the hot seat and to me an other young bermudiens looks like you cant take the heat …..Bermuda look at these fools and look good … old boys again OBA you wont get my vote ….

    • Error of CoMEdy says:

Look at the VIDEO, you can’t make up this stuff.

Bob Richards pulling at his nose (could it be because it was growing from the lies he knew was getting ready to be exposed.) LMAO.

      • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

I wouldnt even mention the word video after that unprofessional loooking, desperate attempt at a muppet show video they released.

    • Mr Cannonier has made a drastic mistake by taking an emotional detour that did not address the question in it’s entirety and I feel that all three men named in the report should answer to the public and not dance around the issue.

Mr Cannoniers emotional speech is fruitless as we are to close to a major election to be found covering up for the ole boys.I for one would like to see Ms.Gwenneth Rawlins,Ms Gina Spence come to the fore front and speak on things that they know and I am almost certain you will get a whole ne wspin on that which we are seeing and hearing and there are others that I can name as we move forward.

I frankly at this point dont see to much ground the O.B.A. can conquer when dodging real issues, then for Mr Cannonier to use the phrase that he is asking the white community to embrace him as a black leader, that is the biggest joke of all.if they dont accept you now please dont expect it after December 17th.

Mr Cannonier talks about the seriousness of being able to afford to live in Bermuda especially our seniors and on that note I can honestly agree with him and the suffering that we are seeing across the board on all fronts,I can agree with him on that also but if his integrity is going to stand in tact,YOU DO NOT WALK OUT OF A PRESS CONFERENCE WHEN UNDER PRESSURE.Mr Bob Richards wanted so eagerly respond when asked if he had anything to say but you can see he only refrained when the leader insited the press conference was over.

Bermuda do not vote based on emotions and based on misinformed information, put the pressure on and make all our leaders on both sides accountable for we will see change on December 17th if we like it or not and that change will show that the O.B.A would gain more seats then most people expected or that we wake up December 18th with an O.B.A. Government and at this point both of those positions is what is reality and we better get use to the fact that change is in the air and will indeed happen.

      • 100% says:

        Thank you Mr. Santucci.

You eloquently expressed how I felt after watching the above video.

There was a term, ‘looking presidential’ that was often the first thing pundits discussed after each of the recent US Presidential debates. Who looked more presidential? As the President was asked very tough questions on Libya and then had to listen to attacks from Romney about the failures of Libya and other issues. Not once did Obama get so animated, so emotional, and vividly angry such as Mr. Cannonier did replying to a simple question.

I agree with you that all three men named in the report should address the public and the real report should be made available to the public. So far, from what has been revealed from the document, I am insulted by that blatant racism or prejudice of ‘using blacks’ to regain power. If this is the reason why Mr. Furbert switched parties, which he has every right to do so, than I applaud him taking a stance against such bigotry that is in the report.

I found the remarks ‘we had to deceive you’ to be insulting to the voters. Equally, I find this report, the response by Mr. Cannonier, and the lack of response by those named in the report to be very troubling.

      • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

Have you forgotten some of the press conferences held by some in positions of power in the PLP in recent years when they didnt like the media response? Didnt they stop the purchase and distribution of the RG by government offices after someone didnt like the negative press they were getting! Obama and many others have walked out of press conferences before!

Mr. Santucci, I assume this means that you think Mrs. Cox will answer all questions regarding government spending, unaccounted for monies, travel, contracts, consultants in her next press conference held to talk about another subject! Why should he answer questions about something he was not a part of. Wayne was the HEAD OF THE UBP at the time this “secret so called document” was written. Was he not the leader? Ask the question of him – not Craig. What does he have to do with any of this!?

And by the way – when the media are to thick to understand the topic of a press conference and choose instead to ask questions of a man about something that he was not a part of – what other choice do you have. You can’t fix stupid remember.

        • 100% says:

To date Obama has never walked out of a press conference because he was asked a question he did not like. He has walked out of meetings but not a press conference, that provided the people with answers. Let’s be honest!! Nor has he displayed such animated body language and an angry tone of voice when responding to a question.

If I remember correctly, the media was printing criminal accusations against the then PLP Government based on no concrete evidence to support such accusations of fraud. These were some very serious accusations which often came across as a witch hunt rather than trying to find out the truth. Because of the media biased position the people of Bermuda lost out on getting to the truth. Nothing in this report is criminal, so you are comparing apples to oranges there.

Craig, is the leader of his party as he keeps reminding us. The report specifically addresses members of his party and since those members are silent, then as the leader he should be asked the questions the public wants to know.

We want to know what this report details? We also want to know what the former UBP members, those specially mentioned in the report, and the ‘black surrogates’ , meaning a black substitutes have to say about this report.

I am seeking the truth first. I don’t blindly defend wrong doing no matter what party. The only way we can hold our political leaders accountable is to call them out on the truth. It is so sad to see that supports on either political party do not demand the truth and transparency of the party they support.

Back to life, if you are a honest person, this report should concern you, because the truth is not being told.

    • Out of flight says:

He was out of control. You are being dishonest. We see the secret report and you act like…. The secret report was disparaging and should have ben destroyed by Mike Dunkley, Grant Gibbons et al. . You cannot justify its existence as we see efforts to implement its recommendations and we see your true colours. If you did not know of its existence you have been duped and lied to. But it is in the Press now and people should be resigning from that party and not saying “Let’s move on.” But you will say it’s okay….move on. Well black people got the message that you have substituted “House Ni….” with the word surrogate. Hahahah. We might be Romney’s 47 % but we are NOT dumb.

    • gotta laugh says:

Question to Bob Richards, does he accept that he was elected under the White party and represented the white party Craig speaks of for years? I can’t believe Bob Richards stood there shaking his head agreeing that he was a member of the white party when for years he stated this wasn’t so? Geewiz we have some men without bollas running to govern. Mr. Tyrell I so wish I lived in Smiths cause you would get my vote and not some clueless opposition embolism

  2. Politicians are all the same!! says:

Craig is finally showing his true colors….

    • Amazed says:

Craigs problem is that he was not apart of the deception so he truly believes in what he is doing. Problem is he now knows taht it was all a scam! He has previously said that he would not have joined the UBP, he now knows that he has done just that!

  3. peeeeeved ! says:

Hmmmmmmph I guessed you showed em huh Cannonier….SMH !

  4. OBA is selling snake oil says:

    So hold on Craig,

    1) Now the report exists? Its not a fabrication?

    2) This report has nothing to do with the OBA? So the people who funded the UBP fund your party, but it has nothing to do wit you. The people who received the report are candidates, and the deputy leader of your party, but it has nothing to do with you.

I really wonder if you believe that you say. I can’t believe you after you called it a fabrication last week and now this week you say its not a fabrication.

    • Chart says:

I think the report released is a fabrication. That’s not saying that a report did not exist.

    • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

There were two reports, one that was commissioned by the defunct UBP after they lost the 2007 election five years ago. There was another that surfaced a few days ago that was an obvious fabrication, to the point that the US company whose name was on the fabricated document as its creator actually threatened legal action because the document was not actually written by them.

    • young mother says:

Craig YA SO fake I wont even stop at ya gas stations look at ya self SR. DO you even know that yes you are a black an as soon as they get what they want from you , you will be seated so far in the back row.. BERMÚDA they come cross like Romney or what ever his name is …

      • S.O.L. says:

he needs to go and have a talk with Pamela Gordon…..exact words from her mouth to me was they gave me such a swift kick in my a$$$$$ she evven stunned me wen she cursed…..

  5. navin johnson says:

Whatever colors he is showing I’m glad he did….about time someone just stood up to the PLP and their incessant attempts to divert the truth from their abysmal record and the harm they have done to Bermuda…..someone with balls…..

    • Vote for Me says:

      @ Navin Johnson
‘stood up to the PLP’?? I thought Mr. Johnson represented the Royal Gazette and was asking questions as part of his duty as a reporter.

Cannonier must be careful with his temper… somce voters think he can get a little hot under the collar. ZBM, reroll the tape of the debate with Richardson and Sullivanwhen teh question of schooling came up!!

    • Undecided Voter says:

Stood up to the PLP. Um its a UBP report and RG asked the question. Nothing to do with the PLP.

      • navin johnson says:

and nothing to do with the OBA either

        • Amazed says:

The majority of the MPs are former UBP so clearly you are wrong! It is however nothing to do with Craig!

          • street wise says:

There are Nine former UBP turn coat members in the plp. Count them yourself….

            • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

Exactly – funny what people chose to not see!

  6. Terry says:

    Great news.

  7. You cant be serious says:

So this big speech was given but he has failed to answer the reporters question.
So if this man was to become the next leader of Bermuda and is asked a question by the international media that he does not like is this the reaction we can expect?

    Wake up Bermuda!!!!

This reminds me of what Ms. Swan stated on “Lets Talk” were she said race is not an issue. News Flash!!! Race is an issue along with the main reason the OBA was formed.

    • Um Um Like says:

“Race is an issue along with the main reason the OBA was formed.”

And race is precisely why the PLP was formed. Remember, “…go out into the bush and fornicate” and “…by our sheer numbers…” we will one day rule this country.

Dame Louis Brown Evans wasn’t addressing white people!

    • Argosy says:

      Did Ewart answer “plantation” questions?

      • M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

Same as Craig will not answer this question satisfactorily . Mr. Ayo Johnson had every right to ask such a question on this platform . They were discussing crime , right? Well Craig , this document , this plan , is a crime against the people of Bermuda .If you defend this type of behavior from the gang of thugs around you , than you’ll also be branded a criminal by the majority of the people who will never accept surrogate status .

        • We the people says:

OMG,you are really over the top now. A crime? Thugs? Give it a rest and stop hiding from the PLP’s abysmal record. The voting public knows exactly what you’re up to, and this time they’re not falling for it.

    • We the people says:

When was the last time Paula Cox held a press conference and answered anything meaningful? The PLP is trying to hide her because her approval numbers are in the toilet. Why shouldn’t she manage the upcoming PLP press conference instead of Wayne? Does she approve of the way her campaign is being waged or not? Isn’t she the PLP Leader (and, oh, also the Premier)?

  8. Vote for Me says:

    Oh No!!!
Cannonier can not simply ‘throw a temper tantrum’ and storm off the national stage!! He needs to know he represents the Official Opposition and with actions like this they will remain in opposition for several years to come.

Some free advice – many accept your statement. The document has nothing to do with the One Bermuda Alliance. But it does have a lot to do with 9 out of 10 of your MPs from the last session of Parliament. The most significant is the Deputy and Spokesperson for Education. You should perhaps take a short break and get Dunkley and Gibbons to host a press conference and have them answer at least one question about the reports. Did they receive the document that was addressed to them that represented a debrief of the 2007 UBP election loss? Please let them know that Barritt has acknowledged that such a report existed to make sure ‘everyone is speaking from the same page.’

Also, Cannonier has in one fell swoop set up the daily paper. Thus far they have not really reported on the obviously damaging report except for the denial of its existence in the Thursday edition.

We will also have to see how Mr. Johnson fares for daring to ask such a question of the Leader of the Official Opposition… we look forward to what should be the leading story in tomorrow’s daily.

    • What? says:

Why? Dr. Brown used the “plantation question” comment as a means to refuse to answer legitimate questions. and y’all defended him to the hilt.

This press conference was about crime, not the report. If they want information regarding the UBP report then they should send queries or set up an interview solely on that topic.

But what I find interesting is not on of you PLPers have addressed the poor academic results and the rise in gun play recently. No you are too damn worried about conspiracies and the like.

It is no wonder we are where we are these days. You lot have the Government you deserve. That is one that saddles with you unsustainable debt, record unemployment, scandals and cronyism in every project undertaken, missing funds as per the AG.

Personally I am very much hoping the PLP retain power as I will like to see how they rectify the problems that have come to fruition under their reign.

      So yes, please Vote PLP!!

      • street wise says:

The reporter asked the wrong question to the wrong person at the wrong time. And Craig got pissed off, because he felt that the so-called secret report was a fabrication of the plp smear machine to deflect attention away from the plp government’s abismal performance, and had nothing to do with the OBA. Good on him…..

I’m getting sick & tired of plp innuendo and their divisive race card! Speak to the ISSUES for a change!!

        Vote wisely.

    • navin johnson says:

National Stage? whatever headline Mr.Johnson uses will attempt to be provocative….no one ever asks Ms. Cox about a question of ethics or lack of same from her “team” and they accept her coquetteish responses without actually question what she is really saying…Glad Mr. Cannonier said what many people feel…stop the crap of the PLP and get on with the problems that plague this “Nation”..Vote OBA and throw the others to the curb where they belong and let them see what it is like to work for a living….if any of them have to work anymore …..

      • Vote for Me says:

        @ Navin Johnson
Surely you jest if you think anything from the daily will be slanted to support the PLP!!

        • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

@ Vote for Me: The headline from the GCSE scores was definitely slanted to support the PLP…95% pass rate, my foot, when only 28% got a C or better in the GCSE exams! That means that more than 70% of our students couldn’t earn a grade high enough to go to a decent college, much less be eligible to run this government later on down the road. Actually maybe by then, high school failures will be considered appropriate as leaders.

Please understand, I applaud those who were successful in the exams, and I feel for those who weren’t. I know very well that there are many students who are bright and intelligent who either were bored to tears in school, or whose learning styles were not engaged. My grandson was one, and was moved from school to school in despair, till he finally decided at age 18 that he knew what he wanted in life, went on-line, found a school where he could fill the holes in his education, study the core curriculum and take the exams, coming away with a 3.2+grade point average and a high school diploma, NOT a GED certificate.

    • More with less says:

Yes, he should have been more like the PLP leaders and stay silent in the face of controversy. This is what the Hon. Mrs. Cox does and what Dr. Brown used to do. Silence is best I guess.

      • Islander says:

or they would let Col. Burch or Laverne answer for them – bunch of rats – call in the exterminators.

Good going Craig, continue to show them what STANDING STRONG is all about and that you have a back bone that isn’t going to break under anybody’s pressure. Truly a grandson that your grandmother would be and your roots are proud of.

    • We the people says:

Sorry, the Royal Gazette needs to question Kim Swan, not Cannonier. Last I knew, Swan was the leader of the UBP at the time.

    • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

Also has to do with 9 from the PLP as well. LOL – But you chose not to see that because it is convenient for you to do so!

  9. PLP is selling snake oil says:

People need to move on. What next, NLP memos? BDP? It was a UBP document, this was an OBA. Stop living in the past. Good on Craig!

    • Vote for Me says:

@ PLP is selling snake oil
Nothing to do with OBA – give me a break!! The report identifies the foundation of the OBA!!

The most damning part of this whole nationally embarrasing saga is that many people believe Cannonier – he had no knowledge of it. This actually makes it worse for him however. He is riding the wave of ‘they voted for me’ to be leader of a new party, only to find out now tht he was simply an unknowing pawn in a game that he did not know was being played and he has no idea what the rules are!!

This is a sad day for Bermuda!

      • Soooo says:

and which report would that be? The fake one produced by someone not smart enough to investigate properly and report accurate information, or the one that may or may not exist?

When the author is found it will be interesting to see how close thir association with the PLP leadership is….

        • Vote for Me says:

          @ Soooo
Are you not the least bit curious that there has not been any further legal action or threats to ZBM, Moreno or the media in general?

Perhaps you should prepare yourself for the great revelation. Do you remember the Tylenol dilemma several years ago? Sometimes it is best to simply handle these problems head on. The only option I see for the OBA is for someone to ‘fall on their sword’ and resign as a candidate. I do not know what the implcations would be for their seat but it would probably be enough to get this story to die down.

Otherwise we get a drip, drip drip up to election day. Just imagine your horrow if (when) everything can be shown to be true!

          • Blurt says:

Look at Vote for me playing in the dirt again, the PLP paid blogger is so keen on his report, probably because he wrote it.

        • Argosy says:

The “author” will never be found any more than the sender of that bullett was found!!! HaHa, what a joke!!!

      • Concerned says:

how the hell would Craig know about the document if he wasn’t involved with the UBP or with politics at the time. The newspapers need to get in contact with the then UBP Leader and his Deputy of that time and without spewing a whole lot of mess, tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth – it’s that simple.

    • frank says:

the document is real some of the things in it are being implameted today by the oba hance we have 22 blacks in the oba, and dunkley is not in the media and graig you can expect more licks to come.and after this election your not going to be the leader you need to hear what your so called friends are saying.just a note to all the young blacks in the oba you can hang out with you blue eyed friends all you want but they willnever take you home to meet momma pa

      • street wise says:

Regarding your last sentense… what an uncouth, nasty, divisive, racist comment to make. How much do they pay you…?!

  10. haha says:

If u can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen. That was totally unprofessional.

Premier Cannonier?? Hmmm I’m not so sure.

    • bermyluv says:

Please tell me that Premier EB was any less unprofessional…

      • haha says:

Premier Brown never stormed out of a press conference.

        • LOL (original TM*) says:

But he did shut down parliment………..

          LOL

  11. Bermudian, and thats all says:

I hear true passion in his voice, boy am I blown away. I didnt think craig was a good speaker but man when he is passionate he sounds amazing.

    Power to you Mr. Cannonier!!!

    • Undecided Voter says:

I guess we don’t answer the question. Thats the way to lead party.

    • Jobless says:

Mr. Cannonier, I thank you for standing up against this nonsense!

There aint no report that is going to get me a job!

I put my hope and faith in you to help turn this economy around and GET ME A JOB!

I supported this government but I am now praying for a CHANGE!
      \

      • young mother says:

@Jobless thr is Work just look harder thr are things in place get out and look becouse ya not getting a job at DD or the Gas station ..let me tell you this Bermuda OLD BOYS AGAIN will tell you the first 2-3 yrs we have to put a few things in place first so just give us a bit more time bermrda .. Well PLP is thr …. and BELIVE ME puppet Craig you WILL NOT!!! BE PREMIER

  12. Just Us says:

So, will the OBA be another party if elected to run the country just not listen to the people and do what it likes? Cause it seems to be starting already and that’s just a press conference…

    • Concerned says:

That’ sjust it – they have been listening to the People who are asking for Change for this Island and if we all work together and stay on the same playing field, hold the MP’s responsible any slips hold the Permier responsible to get rid of them. So if you are not voting for a candidate in the OBA then I suggset you buy a snow shovel because you are going to need one because digging from the bottom up is hard work, are you prepared for that. Think about what is goign to take place under more years of the PLP – financial assistance will be none existent, no jobs: no insurance, no homes, no further education, more people begging on the streets, seniors unable to cope, more people in MAWI – it isn’t going to be really good and remember also that what takes place in the rest of the World now that we have all of these Treaty’s complimens of Premeir Cox under the guidance of EB who had the plan first to bring Bermuda down – “I am going to come back and get what is mine”. W

  13. solutions not distractions says:

The economy, crime and the education of our children are the CRITIAL issues that have been handled badly by the PLP. Our country’s future and our lives here are at stake!

    • Vote for Me says:

      @ solutions not distractions
and which party is better to handle these critical issues? A party baased on a clear philosophy of fairness for all regardless of race or social cirsumstance – PLP? Or a party cobbled together out of political expediency after their inability to win the 2010 Warwick bye election (UBP and BDA)?? Add to that the the underpinnings of the new party (OBA) is more diabolical then even the Leader coud have imagined.

Can you honestly expect the black swing voter to support OBA with all of these shenanigans??

      • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

Vote for Me, you have got to be joking!! The philosophy of fairness for all is not borne out by the PLP’s actions, particularly over the last few years.

The PLP keeps trying to make out some “diabolical” scheme within the OBA, while avoiding any mention of how they are planning to get us out of the various, very deep, holes they have dug.

I guess the people they appeal to are more concerned with these superficial diversions than the sorry state of our children’s education, the frighteningly huge debt we are less and less able to pay, the lack of tourists, the loss of IB, the increase in violent crime and the general lawlessness that pervades the country.

They say scandal sells papers. I guess that is the code the reporter was operating under. Perhaps they think they are emulating the US style. It was the same type of questioning that disconcerted young Ms. Nandi. Personally, I don’t blame Mr. Cannonier. We need to focus on the important things that need so much work, rather than these diversionary, divisive tactics that distract us from the vital issues this election AUGHT to be run on.

      • Keturah says:

Oh please..fairness to all? The same plp who race baited their way through their entire tenure? The same plp who bang on and on about the ubp being in power for 30 years, yet they fully intend to do the same? Give us a break.

    • S.O.L. says:

take note….the police service is run by the Gonernor the Government just finances it…..lesson to learn…He’s just in his 52 room house not saying a word…on crime that’s who we should be attacking…

  14. Bermydude says:

Well done Craig!! enough is enough!! OBA ALL THE WAY!! Let move BDA forward!!

    • Undecided Voter says:

Move Bermuda forward? why don’t we answer questions.

      • Justwonderingg says:

Ok here’s a question… Why are we 1.5 billion $$$ in debt? Why are there soooo many families hurting today with no sign of things getting better in sight?

        • S.O.L. says:

because the system from the white elite designed it that way….99.9% of redundances are black…100% financing on a house designed so you can fail…..1n1 is 11 1 plus 1 is 2…the book is written right in front of your face….bob richards wants eez down to front street….y when they already have…..Dunkley wants to do away with citv….very educational channel in my books….

  15. Bermuda Mom says:

If that is the position he is now taking, he should have NEVER made a statement about the report to begin with. As usual, he’s running away from answering any questions. He is not forthcoming abount ANY informatiion which is totally ludicrous. This man cannot run any country !!!

    • navin johnson says:

fortunately he only has to run this tiny island in the middle of the ocean that has been pushed to the brink by the Government of the day and its incompetance….he will do a great job…..

      • Vote for Me says:

        @ Navin Johnson
Come now… we are only an island in the middle of the ocean with no interaction on the international stage?? I know you know better and can do better than that!!

        • navin johnson says:

our presence on the “International Stage” has been greatly diminished in the last four years to the point of near irrelevance…photo ops with foreign countries do not count as signifigant…the only thing “International” we need are Business people and foreign capital and the PLP have shown they are incapable of keeping or attracting either…be realistic do you believe that any members of the current Government would impress and attract foreign investment?

          • Justwonderingg says:

Navin Johnson to answer your question… Nope I don’t think any of the members of the current govt will attract anymore International business… And I’m not sure if they’re even interested in doing so smh… We get wat we deserve come Dec 17, and I hope it’s the OBA

      • A Bermudian says:

        @Navin Johnson,

Firstly, let me say you are entitled to your opinion, however I have to ask what makes you so sure this man can run this country? I honestly don’t have that much confidence in either party, so please give me some insight to what gives you confidence that this man is the person for the job.

    • And Pleaseeeee tell me the bunch that is in power can?? Crime, Debt, no jobs – shall I continue?

  16. one eye open says:

AYO jOHNSON, IS A HARD NOSE REPORTER, WHO SEEMS TO ASK QUESTIONS MOST FROWN AWAY FROM, BUT WOULD LIKE TO ASK. cRAIG JUST GOT CAUGHT IN ONE OF THOSE DEAR IN HEAD LIGHT MOMENTS. DOES THE DOCUMENT HAVE ANYHTING TO DO WITH THE OBA? IT SPEAKS VOLUMES OF THE TYPE OF DECEPTION A CERTAIN GROUP WOULD GO TO IN AN ATTEMPT TO REGAIN POWER. THIS HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH THE OBA IN THE BIG SCHEME OF THINGS, BUT MORE TO DO WITH THE INTEGRITY AND CHARACTER OF SOME OF THIER KEY FIGURES.

    • navin johnson says:

did not seem like a deer to me…..more like a lion….next time perhaps the “Hard Nose Reporter” will ask Jennifer Smith a question regarding the selective results of the education tests…..PLP desperation. more like what depths a party will sink to in order to retain power…..how about a muppet tune?

      • Tired of the bull says:

lol @navin your boy is just a sergeant in your OBA plan and he is just finding out about it!!!!

      • one eye open says:

Navin, how is this desparation from the PLP when AYO works for RG are u saying or suggesting that the news media is in bed with the PLP. if its anyone desparate here its u and your oba supporters. I guess the old 2003 quote we had to mislead you is nothing to this

    • Vote for Me says:

      @ one eye open
      I could not resist.
“THIS HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH THE OBA IN THE BIG SCHEME OF THINGS, BUT MORE TO DO WITH THE INTEGRITY AND CHARACTER OF SOME OF THIER KEY FIGURES”

Let me help – Dunkley, Gibbons, Crockwell, Pettingill, Hunt, Moniz, Pamplin gordon, Jackson, Simons.

Seems like a lot of integrity and character to be explained.

      • Blurt says:

You wrote the fake one ddn’t you, mr paid PLP blogger.

    • What? says:

So now the RG is not part of the “combined opposition” and a reputable media outlet?

  17. Autumn Fire says:

Ahhh, can I have my voting slip to go, please….

  18. Marc G Daniels says:

Doesn’t the OBA speak about the PLP all the time? Or is it selective in which Party it chooses to speak about? Sorry, but this is a very pertinent issue to many within the community and for the party of transparency, things do not appear to be too clear. Put simply, if the report is real, then there is some cogency to the argument that it was in fact followed. If it was followed, then perhaps there was a desire for political expediency to regain power as opposed to the willingness to dig deep, work within the community and rebuild trust and relationships as a collective as well as individuals. Right now, it would appear that politics has not “changed” and that some of our leaders lack the courage and conviction to address matters which pertain to our collective benefit and failure. If we are truly tired of the racial politics, let us end it, by being sincere and genuine in our approach in the manner that we address, interact and support one another; but more importantly, the manner in which we tackle this persistent challenge, otherwise, everything is lip service. We want to talk about crime, education, and the economy, but if we fail to recognize the interrelatedness of these subjects within the context our racial legacy; we shall forever remain where we are.

    • Zombie Apocalypse says:

But, putting aside the issue about it being a forgery in the first place, it was a report allegedly done by a consultant for another political party. Why would Mr Cannonier have any comment about it at all?

If there are plans that the OBA has, that’s fair game. If there are plans that the PLP has, that is too.

      • Vote for Me says:

        @ Zombie Apocalpyse
You might be right. Let Cannonier stand aside and have Dunkley and Gibbons host. They are both former UBP and key players.

    • A Bermudian says:

      @Marc G. Daniels,

      Well said!

    • M.R. says:

but the PLP is THE GOVERNMENT and they use race all the time and have done so in the past. They don’t stay to the facts and campaign based on emotion.
They are the Govt yet they don’t act like one. One that leads.

    • small fry says:

Well said Mr. Daniels. About time the politics of divisiveness ended once and for all. That’s why I think I’m probably going to vote OBA because PLP seems to me to want to keep the races apart rather than coming together as Bermudians.

  19. diva says:

But yet he can speak on a document’s authenticity which existed before the OBA was formed, before he was in politics, let alone before he was their Leader? Confusingly Interesting.

  20. Jus' Askin' says:

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS IS WHO PEOPLE WANT AS A LEADER?!
People need to learn the difference between ‘an answer’ and ‘the answer’
Craig gave ‘an answer’ which had nothing to do with the question.
His temper got the best of him and he has displayed OBA is not worthy;-)

  21. Real Talk (original) says:

I got goosebumps just listening to him speak with such passion about they country that we all love.

He is absolutely right. More focus on the issues and less focus on the sideshow.

Good on Mr. Cannonier for showing some “testicular fortitude”.

    • Undecided Voter says:

You can’t really be serious are you. He didn’t ANSWER the question.

      • Real Talk (original) says:

        What question?
About a UBP strategy document pre-dating by 5 years the party he is currently leader of?

If you actually take the emotion out of it, doesn’t sound very logical does it?

Fact: I could give a flying you know what what the contents of that alleged UBP strategy say. (I can only imagine what the PLP equivalent document looks like.) Ironically, the PLP seems to be sticking to the alleged script as well. Are we to believe that they too are parties to the document as well?

Point is that this is not the Bermuda that I know and love. And this gutter politics sickens me. Let’s say for argument’s sake that the UBP followed the plan and are now really the OBA. Does that change the crap job that the current government have done over the past few years? Does that excuse poor education results, falling tourist figures, rising unemployment?

        Probably not. So who cares?

        • Oh this is Funny says:

It sounds logical, but if you really think that Craig Cannonier is in charge ponder this.

On Thursday, he said the report was a fabrication. Today he’s singing a different tune. So 1 of 2 things happened

          1) He knew about the report and willingly lied.
          2) He didn’t know about the report and Dunkley, Gibbons, and Smith didn’t tell him it existed so he went out and said its a fabrication.

The first disqualifies the leader as Premier
The 2nd disqualifies the party as government.

If this is what they are doing to him now, what will they do to him if he gets in power.

          • Real Talk (original) says:

Or 3) The report exists (I would expect every political party to have a strategy) but the one “leaked” the other day isn’t it.

Furthermore – how can he answer questions when it is very possible (maybe even likely) that he himself has never even SEEN the UBP report. As the leader of the OBA, why would he have?

Oh. Forgot the OBA is the UBP, right?

            Bore me less.

          • Keturah says:

Actually he said the one posted on the Internet was a fabrication. And it was. So what’s the problem?

      • navin johnson says:

        it was a plantation question

        • M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

That question came from the office of the Overseer .

    • Vote for Me says:

      @ Real Talk (original)
Is it possible to have fortitude without the testicular… or how about the ‘testicular’ without the fortitude!!

  22. PLP is selling snake oil says:

Even if the document was 100% real, it was a business plan. So what? Very sensible of the UBP to make such a plan. PLP obviously doesn’t have one as we’ve been steering in circles and doing joke ads about cars instead of dealing with real issues.

In the plan (real or not) the UBP talked about demographics – about appealing to the black voter. That’s what you do in business, you try to appeal to a certain demographic. All PLP ever did was stir the race pot and say if you voted UBP you’d be back on the Plantation.

Our current Government has cheated us, and lied to us.

Vote OBA. Send Paula a message!

    • You cant be serious says:

So What????? This document spoke to the fact that the party should use black surrogates to deceive the people of Bermuda. The Document stated that the party to which he speaks so highly of should put forth more black candidates as to appear to relate to the majority of the populous!!!!!!!!!
But hey this isn’t a big deal. This isn’t an issue at all.

      • Familiar says:

The leaked ‘document’ did not speak to the fact that the party should use black surrogates to deceive the people of Bermuda.

What the document suggested, and apparently the suggestion of one man only, was that the UBP should not have had Dunkley so up front in all the press conferences and that they should have had a handful of black surrogates up front.

This isn’t a suggestion of deceipt, it’s a suggestion that Dunkley wasn’t the best face for the party, and that the handful of black candidates that were in the UBP were.

        • Oh this is Funny says:

          not handful, “Black Surrugates”.

But since you are defendi9ng the language, how about the UBP calling Blacks “Downscale and Uneducated Voters”

          • Familiar says:

You’d have to give me the context of that quote before I’d consider commenting.

            • OnlyTheTruth says:

Youre a sick person for even contemplating potential for justifying the blatent unambigious language of that report.

Youd be the same person crying on about Dr Browns use of the phrase “we had to decieve you..” without giving any consideration to the context he was speaking in…

    • Vote for Me says:

@ PLP is selling snake oil
“In the plan (real or not) the UBP talked about demographics – about appealing to the black voter”

Yes, appeal to the black voter with disrespect, tokenism and fradulent representation. Way to go to start off on an equal footing with your new partners. Also, if we accept what you say, at what point do you inform the Leader of the new party.

      • PLP is selling snake oil says:

Oh my goodness – trying to appeal to a black demographic. Hang him by his toenails already. You PLPers have gone way out to try and hang race onto this cuz its all you got.

I suppose it would have been better if he’d said ‘That’s a Plantation question” like your boy did?

        You PLPers are PATHETIC.

Good on Craig. And E$% that #$% from the paper!!!

        • OnlyTheTruth says:

Funny how you seem to have no problem with being manipulated by a strategy that is clearly real at this stage.. As for race it sounds kind of ridiculous you crying race card at the party that represents people who were actually on the receiving end of racism, which to this day remains evident in the day to day spectacle of desparity between their lives the and lives their white counterparts enjoy (for the most part).

      • Blurt says:

OBA is forthe Benefit of Bermudians and Bermuda. I’m sorry you will lose your PLP government salary when you are voted out and your pay stops. Don’t worry, OBA has a policy the incentivizes employers to hire Bermudians, so you’ll probably be fine. OBA look out for Bermudians.

  23. Paul says:

Good for Craig! Why the hell should he address something that has literally nothing to do with him and his party? Why allow this ridiculous story to have attention drawn to it by addressing it? It’s like Obama and the stupid birthers: the only time Obama directly addressed the matter was when he tore Donald Trump a new one at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Let the PLP trot out these silly conspiracies, but don’t help them out by addressing them!

    • UBP member says:

Paul, Paul, Paul please open your eyes and mind. The report has everything to do with the idea, ideology and inception of the One Bermuda Alliance aka UBP engine.

  24. cutback.. says:

obviously those who are making negative comments DID NOT LISTEN to what was being said.. listen and understand what is being said..
bermuda is in a very bad state, deal with issues at hand, goin back in time, bermuda will fail.. WAKE UP BERMUDA. vote the renegades out.. definitely time for change…..

  25. Highlyfavoured says:

What was wrong with the question posed by the RG reporter, Mr. Johnson? As a reporter he was questioning something that has come to light for clarification, which in fact is his job. How can people move on as was stated by a previous blogger? If it were any other party, NLP, PLP, Independent, certainly the question would be asked and an answer expected. Whether he had anything to do with it or not, an answer would be desired by many. But are we sugesting that only a few should be questioned when something does not sit right with the people, and dismiss if it is OBA. Are they not interested on where is fabricated document actually orginated? Come on people, regardless of the document, the reporter asked a question, an out burst such as this was not warranted. Seemed a Mr. Johnson hit a nerve, deeply.

    • Soooo says:

Has anyone asked the PLP to comment on their possile involvement in the fabrication?

    • street wise says:

Don’t you get it… the reporter asked the wrong question to the wrong person at the wrong time. And Craig got pissed off, because he felt that the so-called secret report was a fabrication of the plp smear machine, and had nothing to do with the OBA. Good on him…..

I’m getting sick & tired of plp innuendo and their divisive race card!

      Vote wisely.

  26. Familiar says:

I have mixed emotions about this.

While I do think that Mr. Cannonier was perfectly correct in not responding to a question that had nothing to do with him, his party or the reason for the press conference, as the, hopefully, soon to be leader of our country I would hope that he’d handle things more calmly than he did in this instance.

But on the other hand I do appreciate Mr. Cannonier’s frustration in that the local media are buying in to the PLP’s smear campaign and making it the issue of this election not the actual issues we should be hearing about.

I do understand that newspapers are businesses and therefore they’ll write on anything they think sells. I also know that while a reporter may work for an outlet with a particular slant, that reporter will also have his own agenda.

Personally, I’m glad that to date the OBA has not spoken about this ‘secret plan’ or paper or whatever the heck it is, as it has nothing whatsoever to do with this election, the issues, or what is facing Bermuda going forward.

Even if the paper that was put up on line is real. It’s five years old. People change. Plans change. It’s irrelevant.

    • Vote for Me says:

      @ Familiar
Please provide a recent link to a report in the daily about all of this. The daily has been virtually silent on the matter.

The relevance is that we are snow seeing the full realisation of the plan – conceived 5 years ago, implemented 18 months ago (UBP / BDA / OBA) and now we ar at the final stage – the election. All seems relevant to me and many voters.

      • We the people says:

Oh, dream on. Bet you believe in aliens, too. Be careful on December 21st.

      • Keturah says:

        Speculate much, Vote for Me?

      • Familiar says:

If you’re request for a link is somehow connected to the fact that the reporter Mr. Cannonier responded to was representing the Royal Gazette, then you’re a little ill informed on media related matters.

To date, no one, including yourself, has proven the existence of a ‘plan’. What appears to exist, and remains debatable, is a post mortem report complete with advice written by an overseas consultant.

If you in fact look at everything that’s been said by those who’ve said ‘yes, I saw it’ I don’t believe you’ll find a single thing saying the advice was formally acted upon.

To suggest that the UBP five years ago implemented some nefarious plan for the sole purpose of taking over control of the country that would only come to fruition at the next election is more than a little extreme.

It’s far more reasonable to believe that a bunch of politicians from more than one party, got together in the hopes of giving Bermuda a better option than the ones that were available. It’s not inconceivable that some of those politicians were aware of the private documents of their previous parties and took advantage of some of the information and advice therein.

What I find sad, is that some of the others who also were privy to private documents of their previous parties do not have self respect or honour, to have kept such information to themselves. Instead they use it in their own selfish quest for power.

  27. Judge Dredd says:

Cracking under pressure, this does not look good. This guy can’t answer simple questions into the origin of the party? What an arrogant display of snobbery this is. We all know the newspaper is pro UBP/OBA so Craig knew this question was coming. It’s all a staged event to set a policy of not talking about the document and storming out when asked. I assure you OBA, the deception does not work. It looks very arrogant and very bad. PLP

  28. As Bermuda sinks! says:

Wow, now there’s a leader…… passionate and to the point. Some say he didn’t answer…. I think he answered beautifully. The reporter was rude….. it was a news conference about crime and all he could ask a question about is a document that has NOTHING to do with the OBA. Why doesn’t Ayo Johnson ask Mr. Furbert this question……Mr. Cannonier wasn’t even around at the time of the so called document.

    • Oh this is Funny says:

And why does Gibbons, Dunkley, and Smith hide in the background?

    • OnlyTheTruth says:

      LOL! Bias much???

Thats why hes on the front lines.. Because he doesnt know the report nor his role as described in it!

The report is real, that is obvious at this point. If those representing the OBA/UBPs new extended base what to vote as manipulated subjects of a very real social experiment, then they’ll have to live with it.

  29. haha says:

When 3 of the addressees of the alleged report are 3 of the OBA candidates it most certainly does have something to do with the OBA.

  30. Law abiding citizen says:

Mr.Cannonier you could not even answer “one” question. If you want to lead this country in the “right direction” you must not let your emotions get involved. How are you going to handle the pressure in a live debate up against the well, soft-spoken Paula Cox. SMH I’m putting my money on Premier Cox for sure after that news conference.

Word of Advice :Either bail on the debate or get your sh&t together.

    Law abiding citizen

  31. Chris Famous says:

Lol so if race don’t matter why did he specifically say

    “Black”

Matter of fact why is it the OBA only have Black Faces on its adverts?

It is all about race. Crystal clear from the report and the structure of the OBA.

Last year Craig makes a big speech to state he won’t tiptoe around race.

This year he throws a hissy fit when asked a simplistic question.

Better the OBA just put Andrew Simons up front to talk.He knows how to work the camera.

    • The Truthsayer says:

Matter of fact why is it the PLP only have Black Faces on its adverts?

It is all about race. Crystal clear from the structure of the PLP.

      Um waitin…

  32. Jury says:

    The new JOHN SWAN

  33. Black Un-employed Bermudian says:

I think that as someone wanting to lead a country, every issue and question should be address not just the ones that YOU think are important. If a report was in existence where the UBP was to split and form other parties and then they form the OBA and most of the UBP and in this new OBA than I think that report has EVERYTHING to do with this new OBA and it needs to be addressed. Quite frankly I don’t want a Premier who only addresses the questions that want to address so OBA just lost my vote!

    • What? says:

Bet you voted for Dr. Ewart “Plantation Question” Brown though, didn’t you?

      • Black Un-employed Bermudian says:

Actually NO I didn’t!!! I have NEVER voted PLP in my life. Thank you for asking!

    • Familiar says:

I’m presuming then, that you won’t be voting for either party?

    • Blurt says:

He did address the question. Sorry that you are unemployed, it is no fun is it, with jobs dissapearing every week under the PLP, why would you vote for them, or are you voting for an independent?

      • Tired of the bull says:

@blurt i guess you would fight for your top sergeant until you done with them just like what happened to Kim n Wayne right!!

        • We the people says:

Kim and Wayne did themselves in. They were both extremely poor leaders who didn’t get what they wanted and took their marbles home and sulked.

          • Error of CoMEdy says:

That’s a bold face lie. Because Kim Swan would not follow Dunkley et al and they gave Kim an un Vaseline backsiding. as Prince Charles would say, they impaled him with lubrication.

  34. JT says:

Smart. No party or individual will defeat the PLP by addressing their tactices at election time, or by trying to duplicate them. Stay the course. Ignore all the crap around the perimiter. You might win or lose with this approach, but you will surely lose if you fall into the shi**er which is the PLP campaign.

  35. Dee (Original) says:

The same party calling for transparency is avoiding the issue? Craig Cannonier clearly has anger management problems as he often comes across as more angry than passionate. I have lost what little respect I had for him after this sorry to say.

    • Blurt says:

Showed his strength and how serious he is about leading this country out of the stinking pit the PLP have left us to rot in. Well done OBA Leader and next Premier of Bermuda.

  36. Doom's Day says:

I am a young Black entrepreneur and I can out rite say that times are hard to run a small business. I am custantly sacrificing my personal life(time and money)at a high rate to help make my business stay afloat and still things dont look promising. This island is in bad shape and with out a change its going to be worse. the only people that are collecting is Gov. But yet the money is going missing.
Everyday is see dozens and dozens of Gov workers (blue collar and officals)that are just milking the system. Whos there to monitor and make changes? Theres just a blind eye to that
If people are going to use this secret plan against OBA that is just ignorant. You dont think PLP doesnt have secret plans??? I can bet you Dr.Brown is still dictating to PLP especially Paula Cox.
    Bermuda please wake up

    • Hmmmmm says:

You need to wake up. Sacrificing personal time and money at a high rate is what owing a business is all about. I guess you think the OBA will put a chicken in every pot. And as for secret plans, I don’t think the PLP has a secret plan to push acceptable blakcs out front while the power brokers lurk in the shadows. That’s the point dopey.

      • Blurt says:

        Rascist pig

        • Blurt says:

Stick with Bermudians that is what we are and proud if it.

      • 32n64w says:

“I don’t think the PLP has a secret plan to push acceptable blakcs out front while the power brokers lurk in the shadows”

Tell that to Dr. Brown and others who have been secretly meeting behind the Premier’s back.

        • Hmmmmm says:

Now that’s funny. If YOU know it ain’t no secret. Even 2003 wasn’t a secret, why should 2012 be any different? By the way, are you saying that all of a sudden the PLP has some acceptable blacks for your purposes? Do tell…..

    • Oh this is Funny says:

I’m well awake, and i know, that UBP/OBA don’t give a damned about your business. PLP have presided over the creation on MANY black businesses. Whoever is filling your hear with rubbish, seek out the truth yourself.

      • 32n64w says:

“PLP have presided over the creation on MANY black businesses”

… and the demise of even more resulting in record unemployment.

But far be it for me to let pesky facts get in the way of your opinion.

        • JT says:

Some people get a bank loan, buy themselves a suit and business cards and call themselves a businessman.

        • OnlyTheTruth says:

Where you asleep during the past 4 years the world experienced (and continues to) one of the worst financial crisis in history?? You just figured Bermuda, with our single sector economy 85% driven by reinsurance, would be exempt from the effects? Are you just as ready to credit the PLP, pre-recession, for the biggest spurt in international business activity the island experienced DURING ITS TENURE? Your problem is you dont know enough to know who/what to blame for whats going on.

  37. Vote for Me says:

71 comments in less than an hour – I guess this is definitely not something to be discussed… or to quote Ms. Swan – this is just a distraction.

    • We the people says:

Yeah, and most of the comments are coming from the same people…you, for one.

  38. Verbal Kint says:

The news agencies (papers and TV) have no real moral supremacy on this issue. They should not be demanding comment on a document they refuse to print. Until it is in print in the Gazette, I would not comment on it to them either. End of story.

    • Vote for Me says:

      @ Verbal Kint
I think you are typing too fast.
The news agencies (papers and TV) have no real moral supremacy on this issue… Until it is in print in the Gazette, I would not comment on it to them either.

Since when is the Gazette the arbiter of truth?? They seemm to be the last agency to provide full and balanced coverage.

We all can guess what the editorial would have been if the ‘shoe was on the other political foot.’

      • Verbal Kint says:

I never said the Gazette was the arbiter of the truth. You put those words in my mouth. The Gazette is not the only one NOT publishing the document. No one else is either. The reporter for the Gazette asked the question in the press conference. I would not comment on it to anybody who had not published the article. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone pointed a finger at the Gazette when Bernews or the Sun had done the same thing. See Makai Dickerson. People got bent out of shape at the Gazette over the pictures that were published. I first saw the “gang sign” pictures in the Sun. This is only one example. Anyone who looks to only one media source for information is a fool, and anyone who thinks the Gazette is always wrong is also a fool.

  39. What? says:

So what do any of you PLPes have to say about the absolutely apalling education stats released by Dame Smith last week? You know the one that revealed that only 28% of our high school graduates achieved a C or better in their GCSEs. Do you consider graduating students that do not retain the skills to succeed in our economy as “standing strong?”

Or let me guess these stats are just a sypmtom of the “Global Recession?”

Amazing that you have so much to say about 5 year old reports, but stay silent when real reports are made public that affect us all.

But like I said I truly hope that the PLP gets back in, as it will be quite amusing to see the Party that got us into this mess try and fix it. Amusing indeed.

  40. Voteforme says:

Fake document or not. It just shows it can be believable look at who you had in the UBP and who is now behind the OBA. People like Micheal Dunkley who cannot be trusted..its sounds like something they would do..

  41. Voteforme says:

In the case of Craig Cannonier the colors will come out in the wash…

  42. Reality says:

Obviously OBA needs to win the vote of black Bermudians as blacks out number whites.
I hear blacks talking everyday disgusted with PLP but yet they will still vote for them. Then when we see that BDA is going to get worse and harder to live in they will be crying even more complaining about PLP.
Bermuda needs to get out of the hole its in and suceed. Times are hard.
No wonder so much black bermudians are moving to the UK just to be able to live a comfortable life. Most are living on wellfair out there. Guess they not complaining out there that the leaders are White.

  43. Oh Well says:

Why is it that at the OBA pressers Micheal Dunkley the ‘deputy leader’ is standing in the back instead of next to Cannonier…..

  44. James Tucker says:

Wow – Great job Craig! Finally a leader with heart and soul who can tell it like it is.

You’ve got me looking forward to the 17th. with optimism!

  45. Terry says:

    Were doomed.
    Bring it on Craig.
    Enough is enough.
By the way…all you private sector and Government workers……go back to work.

  47. ShameOnPLP says:

Really this is a distraction at its best. If these documents are real then I bet PLP knew about them years ago.
OBA needs to now start heating things up and challenging PLP about all the misleading they have done.

  48. Free says:

Welp. He ended that like a boss lol. He is so arrogant though and that’s a turn off, speaking in third person? Really?

  49. ok says:

So he shuts down the entire conference because a reporter is perceived to be out of control? Really you could not just move on you had to entertain and challenge and threaten that’s a good leader? Everyone loses the opportunity to be involved and hear the conference because he’s making an example out of someone. Is he schooling us all to show strength or weakness?

He mentions Black like color has anything to do with being a business owner, why go there? You want everyone to work together but your words clearly divide based on color. So what is it work together or divide this is contradictory and wrong to even mention color ever! You are teaching kids and adults to see color when you make these statements no wonder politic are black and white and people fight.

Conference displays arrogant and showboating yes, able to control temper, show grace under pressure and rely on the art of presentation and verbal skills, fail….

Leader for all or for one? At least he is showing everyone so there is no misunderstanding.

  50. Chart says:

He did the right thing: shut down the diversions. Keep to the issues that matter.

  51. OBA all the way says:

I can see OBA doing good for Bermuda. Alot of the members on that party are smart business people with their own companies.
If things dont change Bermuda will just be a rock in the middle of the atlantic. Alot of people think were so fortunate here and were better then other countries in the world!Ha
Pretty soon all international business will leave and set up shop somewhere ele if this cocky/ disrespectful GOV stays in power.
I heard a story yesterday how a International business man moved his office here with 30 employees because he loved BDA. Soon after he located his family here but Gov denied his personal maid to move here saying she is to old to work. This maid was a family maid and help raise the same man that moved here so basically he looked to her as family. So because Gov denied the maids entry the man’s wife said shes done with Bermuda. So the man closed his office in BDA and moved his office with 30 employees with his life long maid to Bahamas.Way to go PLP. We are loosing Internation Business at a enormous rate.

Wow just on this case alone:
    1 less excutive house rented
    30 less apartments rented
    1 less office rented
30 (plus) less taxes to gov
30 less people shopping to BUY BERMUDA
30 less people travling back and foward and also inviting friends and family to BDA
AND SOOOO ON do the math
Every business that leaves Bermuda Hyrts our economy in BIGG ways.

    • Oh this is Funny says:

Did you hear the story of the 2 companies that moved here this year or the 10 hedge funds. Or did you just look out for the negative.

What happens when that person says maid, cook, houskeeper, babysitter etc etc…. Let them all in, then say your family doens’t have work right.

Some peopel just don’t get it.

      • OBA all the way says:

No you dont get it. Ok we have new people here but we need to keep the existing people here. This guy wanted 1 person thats been with him for years to stay with him. How is this taking a job from a bermudian when this man moved this life here??? Now look he’s GONE

    • ok says:

Now you are thinking but do you think this party will change the views on expats. They will not but this is the root cause. You need a leader to step up and support your view because it’s right on the money! You get it but GOV will never unless more like you shout this from the roof tops and get others to truly believe this is exactly the reason you are in this but craig’s GOV will also not change this view of expats.

    • OnlyTheTruth says:

So who was being more irrational? Local immigration policy or the guy who was clearly used to getting everything he wants the way he wants it? What a precedent to set…

So your idea of appeasing IB is bowing to every whim of its representatives. If you think that mans response was balanced and rational, rather than comparable to a child’s tantrum, you clearly have no national pride.

And for the record, genius, corporate decisions are centered around you and others view that the PLP government is “cocky” and “disrespectful”.. That’s the view of arrogant foreigners and local folks like you who view black government authorities as “uppity”… It has its history and its in your blood.

Stop to notice how the biggest and most successful (or in Darwinian terms the fittest) representatives of the international business community are still here and quite happy. Or maybe you know better than them about how happy they are…

  52. Serious Though says:

shutting down a Press conference just because you don’t want to answer questions about a secret document is absolutely wrong! you had the chance to clear this issue and factor a new tone in this campaign. DON’T Believe we just want to listen to you, we also want to ask question and we demand answers..

    to put in Perspective,
If you are in relationship, and one day ,if your partner wanted clarification on your past acquaintance(s) , the wrong answer will be that’s in the past, move on! we are human beings, we want answers… that’s our nature..

    • Keturah says:

What? The document has nothing to do with me or the oba wasn’t good enough for you? sometimes you’re in a relationship with a paranoid person. What can ya do, they don’t want to listen..

  53. Gambler says:

I am not to Impressed he will come up against more then that if he is leader of the country or not. He just lost my Vote another weak leader.

  54. Another swing voter says:

Craig Cannonier showed his human side. So did Barrack Obama when he shed tears on camera. Ewart Brown got away with a lot of temper tantrums and banned the Royal Gazette. What you have to say about that?

  55. Rockfish#1 and#2 says:

Cannonier had every right to be angry, but he handled this matter with emotion rather than tact!

He should realize that whenever these distractions occur, the Government have one less day to answer the tough questions before the election. In other words they are running the clock down. Today his opportunity to deal with an issue was lost.

The PLP should call a press conference with Cox, Burgess, and DeSilva present and allow the same reporter to question them in the same manner.

    • OBA all the way says:

That wouldnt happen….. I can say Desilva will be the next Premier if PLP stays in power. Then he’ll get everything he wants with his personal business plans including Hamilton docks….

      • Rockfish#1 says:

Surely you jest.It is highly unlikely that Zane or Jonathan will ever become the leader of the PLP. Furthermore, the trough will be empty soon, so they will not stick around anyhow!

  56. CHEEKUMS BIE says:

OBA= OBVIOUS BOASTFUL ARROGANCE,”I’m going to end this” then he shakes his head all arrogantly….answer the question Craig!!!why all the spin??? Why are we called black surrogates??
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  57. ok says:

We didn’t get to hear any solutions for the issues that matter nice he just shuts down the conference and throws his work associates under the bus. I guess the issues that matter he doesn’t have solutions for or he doesn’t want to talk abou them? Why it’s too easy to point out problems anyone can do that. What a shame to make it all about that one thing and spend so much time showboating over it then skirt the real issues. This is a tactic to avoid and deflect nicely played.

The use of “I”, referring to himself as the leader repeatedly, tells you something. No politician ever does that it’s inexperience showing. Not to mention body language casually leaning on the podium, arms spread out. He needs lesson on humility and the Alexander technique would not hurt. He has a lot to learn about public speaking.

    Issues avoided:
    Unemployment at 10%- and 36%
    Can’t afford groceries
    Foreclosures
    White professional sector.

Unemployment will always be an issue when you make it hard for expats to open businesses and grow in your environment. You just dont have the population to do it by yourself and need to accept and acknowledge that. Foolish pride is making the issue compounded by your own hand . Population is the same reason you only have a 2 year college course. Not everyone can afford going overseas but the government will not invest in Bermudian education for all. Only for the rich and their are not enough of you. It’s hard for Bermudians to get educated and employed by your own design.

Can’t afford groceries because it’s too hard to get a “good” paying job (see above)

Foreclosures – Expat jobs go away, landlords can meet mortgage demands (see above)

White Professional sector (really only whites are professional maybe thats the problem ;) – Why do you think “white people” have this perceived advantage? Maybe because they are more likely to be educated (generalizing by stats) and accepting of help from overseas companies to establish and grow with Bermudians.

It’s easy bu the truth hurts and won’t win him any points with “Black” supporters. It’s a vicious circle and he can’t break free to be a real leader. Interesting but not rocket science just need to put away the ego.

  59. Hmmmmm says:

I encourage everyone to listen to this little speech from the Leader of the OBA. It gives some insight into exactly why that Party cannot close the deal with black people. Craig Cannonier described two economies. “black businesses” who “continue to die” versus the “white establishment community…. the professional private sector”. The Chamber of Commerce would have us believe that this isn’t true and that there’s one economy in Bermuda. Well Mr. Cannonier doesn’t think so. His comments acknowledge the divide and as usual with people in his position everyone is supposed to ignore it now that the economy is issue #1. He says it again though when he speaks to “those black entrepeneurs” and how he is committed to “working with the private sector” in this country. Two economies. This is exactly why their payroll tax plan rewards businesses while still making workers pay their portion. Its their whole economic theory; predicated on “them” making “us” grateful just for being employed. So my wage remains taxed and I should be grateful for working while the business guy gets the chance to invest his savings or blow it in Vegas. What about equal relief or something close to it? no chance for me to get a break and save something extra or spend it in the economy too. Two economies.

Now, let’s deal with the psychology of his reaction to the questioning. Believe it or not, this was planned and rehearsed; he just didn’t tell Baron and Bob, and that’s obvious. The preaching indignation is an attempt to take this off the table, but like most black men in the company of more powerful whites, Craig allowed himself to be used to deflect this. Why is he the only voice of the OBA speaking on this if it has nothing to do with him or the Party he leads? Why not say “well this is something you should ask either the author or those more familiar with the report” and be done. Instead, we get a week of nonsense complete with calling it a fake. Dumb. You own this issue now Craig meanwhile Dunkley, Gibbons and Smith enjoy the cover you’re providing. A strong black man would’ve said “ain’t no surrogates around here so you’d better ask them…..”.

    • Liars says:

      your a moron

    • M3ke says:

      Great reasoning. I agree!!

Craig needs to learn how to be a leader and be humble. Never once did you ever see Obama act with such great anger after being taunted and attacked verbally by Romney in each of the debates. He would never have walked off the stage with so much hostility.

  60. Private Pyle says:

    Echoing an earlier comment:

This country is on the verge of colapse both socially and economically. – confirmed

Finally someone stands tall and speaks from the heart.
    True leaders are passionate.
True leaders stand up for what they believe in.
True leaders take control of a situation and act.
    Tue leaders are brave.
You saw a true leader today.

When’s the last time Paula Cox stood up, made sense, didn’t talk like a bougie empress with words no one understands and showed emotion?

  61. Trying to vote for the OBA says:

How embarrassing! I was embarrassed for all those concerned while watching this video. Craig has a temper and he let it get the best of him today. Only human I guess. He is also not very good when speaking “off script.” Bob Richards’ facial expressions were hilarious; he could never play poker. Shame on you OBA for leaving Craig to handle this stuff by himself; he is ill prepared for most things. Why does he keep reminding us that he is the leader of the OBA? Who are you trying to convince?

    • Rockfish#1 and#2 says:

Perhaps Cannonier should design his version of Brown’s “that’s a plantation question”, then refuse to answer questions that cause him heartburn.

      • Hmmmmm says:

And “as a black man” (as he likes to remind us) just what he could he say? Because let’s face it, plantation questions are real. Read a piece by Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post in which he explains why the US presidential campaign featured slogans like “Let’s take our country back” and “Let’s take the White House back!”. “Back” from who ? Did somebody steal it? That’s a plantation slogan that has never been used before in a presidential campaign…..all because the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a brother. I never heard a UBP Minister asked if someone doing Government work was his cousin….never.

        • Keturah says:

That’s called reading too much into things…or being a touch paranoid about white folk

  62. Groundhog says:

Since the subject meeting was set up to specifically address crime in Bermuda, Craig Cannonier was correct in his decision to halt the press conference after Ayo Johnson rudely persisted in demanding a discussion of a completely unrelated and irrelevant matter, even before Cannonier had finished his opening remarks. Cannonier’s assertion that an alleged report by the UBP some five years ago is irrelevant insofar as the OBA is concerned, is correct. It has absolutely nothing to do with the OBA, its leadership or the subject matter of the press conference which is the subject of this article and as such should have been and indeed was a non-issue and should not have been opened for discussion at this particular meeting.

I say good on Cannonier for standing his ground. Instead of focusing on an “alleged” report, what should be considered instead are Cannonier’s opening remarks relating to the OBA being a party that is all-inclusive, not furthering division of Bermuda’s people by dint of race.

    • Hmmmmm says:

Ah yes, Bermuda is another world, where the press must wait, hands folded, arms at their side, for a subject to be raised before they ask a question about it. And God forbid anyone be “rude” in the course of an election campaign. Tsk tsk. We don’t even have the training wheels off in our understanding of politics or democracy.

    • ok says:

Awesome, he shut down a chance to speak about the “real issues” and to answer the peoples “other” questions, to school one idiots talking out loud? And you say good on him? You must be a friend of his for cutting him an undeserved break. Time is running out and he exited stage left, nicely planned now we will never know how he will address the real issues he fooled you. Ok.. now go to polls and place your uneducated vote for the guy you like best not for the one who has to defend his positon and convince the voters he’s the man for the job. Lets vote for the color of his suit or haircut. You don’t shut down a conference like this, well maybe in Bermuda you do and maybe that’s the real problem

  63. Open your eyes people says:

Wasn’t it the UBP/OBA that first introduced this education system that is now failing our students..Wasn’t it the UBP/OBA that flooded our island with international business and drove up the cost of living on our island. People need to stop complaining and realise what is really going on and what the OBA’s plan really is…. All they want to do is sell out bermuda to these international companies for a buck. Stop blaming th current gov for every little thing that happens… What better do you think be OBA is going to do really.. How are they going to create jobs in such a bad economy that isn’t just subject to Bermuda it’s world wide people. How are they going to solve gun crime really? They haven’t given any concrete solutions on how they are going to do these things.. To me ya jut what the people want to hear… But if they do come into power which I hope doesn’t happen.. Hope all of you that are hoping they do are ready for all the broken promises

  64. just a thought says:

Sooooooooo PLP press conference by Wayne Furbert….. SO I am really supposed to trust a Flip-Flop??? I don’t think so!!!

  65. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

Am I the only one who sees it as suspicious that this ‘document’ emerges at the same time as the GCSE results? Look at the furor! Well, I’ll tell you one thing, it shows that the PLP CAN learn from mistakes. The same tactics were used on them more than once in the past….Slight of hand, mis-direction, smoke and mirrors! We are being razzle-dazzled a la “Chicago”

  66. Truth (Original) says:

Those were plantation questions :-) . Craig handled that.

Lets deal with the real issues please.

    • ok says:

Plantation question? Nice no wonder we live in a black and white world with ignorant comments like that. We know which way you are voting. Craig ran away so he didn’t have to answer the real questions fooled you.

    • Out of flight says:

The real issue? Hahahah. The secret report was denied by him as a fake. Now we see it was true (Wayne Furbert and Kim Swan) so Craign Preacher Cannonier has been lied to. Plantation question????sure is painful when it hurts to get the truth.
On the one hand you want the Right to Know but on the other when it is not in your favour you say move on. No condemnation from a single white Bermudian about its contents. Blacks now see what they really think about us.

  67. RFK JFK MLK says:

Party Politics from both sides as usual. Ugh.

  68. Retired Broadcast Journalist says:

Craig Cannonier would have been better off answering the question even if had nothing to do with the OBA. Now he will find his decision to end the press confrence will haunt him for weeks to come. His action is what the media is looking for and will probably be the lead story on Radio and TV and the front page story in the newspapers. It won’t end there editorial writers will probably mention it as well and if he attends another press confrence guess what he will be asked?

  69. Triangle Drifter says:

Good going Craig. You showed your human side. The report, real or fake, is years old, if real. It was produced for a now defunct organization, the UBP. The OBA now have a good portion of former UBP people. The OBA is also made up of people who had nothing to do with the UBP. The OBA is its own entity. This report has nothing to do with the OBA. This UBP report, if indeed it is real is not for the OBA to answer to.

Cannonier gave the media a warning to stay on subject of the news conference. One reporter ignored him, even interrupted him. He shut the conference down. A no nonsense man.

  70. Liars says:

    What about the PLP’s plan????

Remember the “grand plan” EB talked about….l hear the fence at the airport has a new lock on it….beware, people that want to leave next year with your money!

  71. Portia says:

    WELL SAID CRAIG!!

  72. Argosy says:

    Good stuff, Craig.

Let’s get on with the lots of hard work ahead to straighten out the mess left behind by these incompetent, unethical, racist people who claim to be “standing strong” for Bermuda.

  73. Soon be over says:

So I read above at some of the posts comparing Craig Cannoniers tantrum to that of Dr. Browns plantation comment… So are you all saying that two wrongs make a right or even better still that you agreed with how Doc answered the question? The real question the reporter asked was why the lack of response from the ex UBP members who are now standing for election under the OBA party which Mr Cannonier is the leader. So this was a valid question to be posed. The report is damning and if real poses a lot of questions on the perceived racist comments included in the document. I believe Craig opened himself up to questions as I read on this site last week his claim that the report is a fake. How would he know that if either he has seen the real report or has asked the members that have. This whole thing smells like the dump right now because we haven’t heard nor seen the players mentioned in the report. What happens if this report turns out to be authentic and the contents are that which Kim Swan has confirmed…… Will Craig then resign as premier if elected so that Dunkley can take the reigns because he never confirmed nor denied the report existed.
This actually reminds me of the 47% comment Romney made during the US election. A moment you wish you had back but can’t.

  74. C.B.A says:

You can vote for someone who shows their angry (which is to be expected) or a finance minister who allowed us to go into debt. OBA all the way!

  75. eyeinthesky says:

What’s even crazier is that in 2007 – Wayne Furbert was opposition Leader, Cannonier was no place to be found. BDA had not formed yet. So Wayne had seen the document, he moved parties between 2010-2011. Why didn’t Furbert expose information back then(2007)? I would guess it was his “secret”plan as well. You see, PLP you have some right thinking people that have voted for you…… what some of us can’t accept is the fox in the hen house. Now in 2012, he is a snitch as well. So, what concerns me now is for giving up this information (cause your been sitting on it for some time now) is this why he has over taken some of the more loyal entrenched PLP supporters? My boy Clarke it’s clear now! Timing is everything.
    Don’ beat Craig………beat Wayne……..

  76. eyeinthesky says:

By the way I’m not for OBA!

  77. Time Passages says:

OBA wants to deal with issues
PLP wants to deal with emotions
    OBA wants to take action
PLP wants to continue farting around with race
    OBA is finally getting tough
    PLP can’t handle it.

BooHoo PLP enjoy your last days.

  78. tired says:

I’m so sick of all of this. Young People are getting shot, young people are beating up on each other, people are losing jobs everyday, our debt will never get paid and all everyone cares about is a document that is 5 yrs old. Seriously folks what kind of people have we Bermudians become. Sad really.

  79. At The End Of The Day... says:

At the end of the day you have 2 options if you plan on voting:

Option 1: Vote PLP & deal with the devil you know

    OR

Option 2: Vote OBA & hope for change

I’m personally tired of the devil I do know, so I’m voting for change. Even if it means putting some UBP staff back in power. At least when they was at the helm Bermuda looked appeasing to the eye.

    Signed
Young, Black, Bermudian <- since it always seems to be about race if you're voting for the OBA

    • Oh Well says:

@At The End Of The Day: it doesn’t matter who you vote for. One is gonna. S…. you over faster then the other. I do agree a change maybe for the better.

    • status! says:

@attheendoftheday——-Young voter I urge you to know more about your history you are too young to remember the first fourteen years of the ubp ruling party when women, blacks and the poor could not vote even if they didn’t want to!Also the riots that took place and the fighting and guns were around ,discrimination was prevalent and it had a lot to do with race.. the PLP were the first group in Bermuda to establish themselves as a party, the only thing they didn’t have was control of the ecomomics which has always been in the hands of white people ,so they did not get in …that was back in 1963, the ubp took control years later..why color makes a huge difference is because black people have not been able to advance as they should because they have not held the ecoomic wealth. Don’t be fooled into thinking that those with wealth are concerned about your welfare…

  80. watchfuleyes says:

No one wants to hear Craig’s monologue, just answer the question! trying to deflect the question,
I think thou doth protest too much yes, walk out, walk away, run… that’s showing leadership right???

    • M3ke says:

He’s not a leader duhhh. What kind of leader walks off the stage… hahahahhaha Did you see the part were he has his arms open like he’s some dictator of the Middle East??

  81. Rock Watcher says:

Poor Wayne Furbert, must like the lime like,,, I do remember he did not stand up for Jamahl simmons when he was having problems with certain white members of his constituency, now they are both in the same party!! What a joke!!! Can’t wait to put my x next to my OBA Candidate. Vote the PLP out!!!

  82. Oh Well says:

It is obvious going by his body language that Cannonier has something to hide. He is hoping that no one will ask about it anymore and the issue will go away. He has shown his inexperience in politics and his inability to be a gracious leader. He has fallen in the trap set by the media and failed the test. How many times had Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey asked if he supports President Obama after hurricane Sandy and he never lost his cool. Don’t be surprised if Cannonier is asked to step down. His actions today maybe a nail in the OBA’s coffin. It doesn’t matter how many times you are asked a question you don’t wanna answer you deflect it and say “next question please” very unprofessional…

    • Angela says:

They should have questioned Dunkley or Gibbons. How the heck would Craig know about the report when he was not involved with the report? Also why Furbert not come clean until now? All about strategic electioneering.

      • Oh Well says:

If Cannonier questioned those involved he sure as heck knows about it now…

        • Angela says:

Maybe so but as usual look who is in the background keeping quiet.

    • Bieber says:

Yeah and the the PLP will deceive us again.

  83. LaVerne Furbert says:

Poor Craig!! He really thought that those people invited him to the table because he had something to offer Bermuda. I know how he must feel now, realising that he was just a black surrogate. But he still can’t bring himself to direct his anger at the right people (the UBP), he lashes out at Ayo Johnson.

I guess it’s true what I’ve been hearing about Craig and his problem with anger control.

As I will continue to say a vote for the OBA is not a vote back to the plantation, but a vote back to the UBP.

    • Keturah says:

You really do love to race bait, don’t you Laverne? And you wonder why the races aren’t uniting. Try looking at how far we’ve all come, instead of what we’ve left behind. Divide and conquer, right?

    • Angela says:

Well one could say the same for about two white surrogates in PLP – Mr DeSilva and Mr. Smith – just part of the PLP to make it look like PLP cares about ALL of Bermuda.

When it comes to anger issues and storming off – I guess it takes one to know it ha ha ha.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Oh look who just crawled from under her rock. Speaking of not controlling ones anger.

    • street wise says:

And you are certainly THE ONE to speak about anger! As you have had a big chip on your shoulder since before highschool. I believe you may have been born angry.

      • Keturah says:

Poor Laverne..a relic of times long gone. Like the ubp.

    • Too Bad Craig says:

@Laverne. That was a painful way to find out that you are really not leadership material. Your just a puppet on some strings. Craig you got used in front of the whole island. Kim didn’t tell you about the plan man?? I bet Craig jumps ship just like the rest who had to find out the hard way.

    • Oh Well says:

@Laverne Furbert: You know what they say in the case of Craig Cannonier “it will all come out in the wash” some people who know Cannonier are just smiling now because they know his true colors and he has just shown them today…

    • Private Pyle says:

Laverne says “As I will continue to say a vote for the OBA is not a vote back to the plantation, but a vote back to the UBP.”

I’m sorry Laverne, but like it or not, we were a lot better off then and I’d go back to that tomorrow if I could.

  84. Justwonderingg says:

Good for you Craig! You should real commend and you showed that you’re a stand up kinda guy… Unlike Wayne furbert who basically said that he’s a political —–. Thanks for sticking to the real issues like the single mothers that can’t afford to put groceries on their table and unemployment rates being horribly abysmal.. THANKS FOR NOT MAKING THIS ABOUT A PIECE OF PAPER THAT A CONSULTANT RECOMENDED TO THE UBP!!

    • street wise says:

Wayne is a double turncoat, and in my mind has lost any integrity he may have had. His press conference was disturbing. Who could trust the guy now? Don’t tell him any secrets, that’s for sure….

    • edwin says:

GRAIG BOLTED BECAUSE THE HEAT IN THE WAS TOOOOOO HOOOOTTT FOR HIM.
AND THE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE ALSO BEING CARRIED OUT.TAKE OFF THE BLINDFOLDS.

  85. OBA script says:

Justwonderingg – wonder no more – that “piece” of paper is the formation of the OBA into existence. Dunkley and mates ran with it, made Craig an offer he could not refuse and hence the OBA blacks surrogates all but one, he craig in a safe seat. Licks is what they need at the polls for dishonesty.

    • Justwonderingg says:

PLP’ whole platform has been about dishonesty… Their campaign is aimed at dumb people because that is obviously how they feel about the majority of bermudians. Sad but true. They haven’t given a legitimate reason as to why we’re in so much debt and they don’t have ANY solutions as to how to fix it. Our beautiful Bermuda has already begun to be called “little Jamaica” and a vote for the PLP will only cement that term further

      • UBP member says:

Sad that you feel Bermudians are “dumb people”… We dump people are smart enough to smell a rat and the rat is all in the report of the OBA becoming a new political party.

  86. Eyeinthesky says:

Laverne lets see…..Definition: Anger; Derick Burgess kickin Micheal Scott’s butt! N those two are elected officials! Or was that assault!

    Or

Butch losing his mind at press conferences…….

    Are u for real!

    • gotta laugh says:

yea but they were ninja enough not to have an audience. What Bob called Craig, oh yes, an inexperience colt, bet he was having a good pillow talk & laugh about how the colt behaved like a colt today.

  87. Oh Well says:

I was not a fan of former premier Ewart Brown but I had never seen him act that way at a press conference. One thing I can say Dr. Ewart Brown carried himself very professionally. Cannonier has a lot to learn if its not to late for him. They still want dump him until after the election.

    • Out of flight says:

When Cannonier is dumped he will never be heard of again. He will wait a while then tell us the truth. That we were deceived.

    • Argosy says:

Not answering a question because he judged it to be associated with a “plantation” is not what I would call either professional or statesman-like. Definitely not exhibiting class!

  88. StopBeingIgnorant says:

Well after last night my vote may change that was ridiculous!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Who are you trying to fool? You were never going to vote for them anyway.

      • StopBeingIgnorant says:

Since you want some attention @Triangle Drifter I’ll give you some STHU talk about what you know not what you think you know fool! #thatisall

  89. Just a thought says:

Can’t stand all this back and forth….I guess Wayne Furbert had no problem reaping the rewards before he crossed the House….how can you just change your whole philosopy? We need the best brains to save this precious little island and not vain politicians…hoping for a coalition and then they have to work together but may even consider voting Independent this time round…

  90. umjussaying ! says:

Its obvious the OBA leader with all due respect .. will be a puppet on a string cause he has no experience in running this country unlike Mr (UBP) Dunkley who does, so naturally he will have to adhere to his advice and that of his fellow (UBP) experienced Politicians which are the same ones that got us in this mess by depriving Blacks of a solid education (not only academic) while allowing drugs to be freely sold on court street in the 70′s up until the 90′s too allow the black peoples mind to be intoxicated and distracted from the real issue which was a hold on economic prosperity … Thus creating this generation of youth that obviously have no respect cause they can’t even respect there own parents because of the shame of substance abuse… Which occurred on there watch under John SWAN (another puppet) responsible for the social ills, who was too busy being led by his own desire or personal wealth.. These are not only my feelings they are clear and evident facts!! So OBA kiss my a$$ ‘passionate puppets’!! All of you want power and control but can’t control the power !

    • Victor says:

I’m crying in my tea cup, you poor deprived little soul. Quick, get out the violin…

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Hope it is not too late for you when you finally open your eyes & see reality instead of looking at life through green shades.

  91. Victor says:

Good for you Mr. Cannonier, you are clearly not a run of the mill politician, in fact not at all a politician – how refreshing.

Many years ago, my great auntie (recently deceased) gave me a document for safe keeping which I opened and read following her ascent to the pearly gates (where no doubt she was told she would have to wait). It was a master plan by certain high ranking members of the PLP to privatise various Government services as they believed they would run more efficiently, including the hospital, works and engineering, TCD, the airport, BHC, plus a few others. I was surprised that there was no outline in this document to explain the proposed way in which these valuable assets would be put into private hands but upon deeper reflection now understand why – in their great collective wisdom it was determined that they themselves were best suited to run these now privatised services and that therefore no public sale of said assets was needed. Well I for one am glad at the honesty and integrity of these PLP politicians because I am sure they are putting all the proceeds right back into Bermuda where they justly belong…And I’m sure like Madame Premier we all still believe in Santa.

In the meantime of course Mr. Wayne Furbert has read the UBP report – he was one of the guys wo commissioned it.

  92. Xman says:

If a reporter started asking me about a lot of dumbness I would have shut down the press interview too.

  93. Jahma gibbons says:

I will make this real short and simple …IF YOU PAINT A HORSE BLACK AND WHITE IS IT A ZEBRA NOW? NOPE ITS STILL À DAMN HORSE! NOW THE REAL QUESTION IS CAN THAT HORSE FOOL YOU?

  94. tfrm says:

If any of you can actually look at this country and say that we are “not being driven into the ground” if you don’t see the troubling spiral downwards that we are on and the desperate need for change, you are obviously in it for the wrong reasons. I cannot imagine how any intelligent human can’t see that we are desperately in need of change, in need of viaion, in need of NO MORE PLP who have had many years to ruin this beautiful island. But if you don’t see it, and you continue to vote for the PLP, probably based on race as you have been brainwashed in to assistaing with keepiong racisim alive and well in this world at the request of your PLP, then you can suffer along. Luckily I can leave anwhenever I want, liver and work anywhere I want, and yes I am Bermudian, but there is no way that I will sit back in a country like this which will only taint my beautiful sons mind and offer him up no opportunity, culture, or social skill what so ever, so you can suffer alone.

  95. Yes I says:

Unfortunately Craig Cannonier is a good guy trying to make a positive difference but involved with a bad party. UBP is the snake and the OBA will become the snake with lipstick. At the end of it all, once the election is over we will all just go back to life as normal. Nothing will change and we must accept that.

    More popcorn please!

    • Fed Up says:

a little more positive thinking might do some good. Do you have an insight that we don’t know about to be able to say that the OBA will be the snake with lipstick……better than the viper we’ve had for the last how many years

  96. M.R. says:

The OBA needs to step this up a notch. They need to get their hands dirty just like the PLP have gotten theirs dirty.

The OBA needs to take this mess we find ourselves in right to the feet of the PLP and Cabinet Building which is the right and obvious thing to do. Otherwise, they lose this election.

  97. Yng Black Mind says:

    People of Bermuda:

    This is the bottomline:

    1. The document is real and references can be made of the similarities of the foundation of the OBA with the recommendations in the document.

    2. Kim Swan is simply providing the information AFTER the threat of legal action against Bermudian media (Gary Moreno, Royal Gazette, BBC, etc.) – not for political points.

    3. Any election is never fully about the issues – – (point out any election in history that was, I dare you) – – thus it is important for the OBA to deal with this situation, instead of deflecting.

    4. This is an issue for the OBA not the PLP – – the longer they wait, the worst it is going to get.

    5. Our country needs people who understand our issues and are willing to work together to solve them – – I DON’T CARE IF THEY ARE WHITE, BLACK OR WHATEVER – – they need to be trustworthy, honest and above board – – thus, both the PLP and the OBA need a real “gut check” as they both smell like rotten eggs after Halloween.

Deal with the circus or lose the election – OBA.
Get focused on the plan to solve our issues or get the hell out – PLP.

    Any questions>?

I will be watching now and after December 17 – – whoever is government. If there isn’t any movement or solutions, there will be issue.

    Yng Black Mind
(those who know understand, but those who understand and don’t listen will feel)

  98. Terry says:

    Were doomed.

  99. The Truthsayer says:

    1. THE UBP DID NOT WRITE THE REPORT. They asked an American consultant to explain to them why they lost the election and the consultant wrote the report. How can the UBP be blamed for what some foreign consulant believes or suggested?

    2. Craig Cannonier was NOT a member of the UBP, he has NOTHING to explain.

    3. A report/campaign suggestions is NOT A “PLAN.” If there was a written response to the report that stated the reports suggestions would be implemented then THAT would be somthing to talk about, BUT there has been NO talk of a written response to the report!

    4. It’s like blaming someone for someone else’s beliefs! Thats just foolishness!

    5. The PLP has the same types of reports and “plans.” Why no mention of those?

  100. The Truthsayer says:

I think the funniest thing out of all of this is the PLP HAVE YET to put a serious plan out for the voters to see, just running on what the OBA is doing “wrong,” trying to distract people!

PLP WHERE OH WHERE IS YOUR PLAN?!?!?!

NOT THAT SILLY “10-POINT PLAN” (which is just goals btw).

    WHAT A JOKE!

  101. oh my durr says:

yes finally some passion! i get the feeling this is a man being real not wheelin’ and dealin’

im a swing voter but when was the last time a plp candidate spoke with such FYAH!

  102. Tiptoes says:

Well I will say this, all you PLP fans don’t have to stress…OBA will not come close to winning so relax. True black Bermudians know the truth about who the OBA represent. Get your grand children, cousins, uncles, call the children from college and even your family who have moved away to come back and vote PLP.

UBP were the ones who started all the separation and racism and looked to keeping the rich rich and nothing has changed. Racism is alive and well and hides behind the OBA. what is sad is the blind black Bermudians who can’t see it, like the young foolish candidates such as Miss Davis. Poor sight, she will soon find out and will be like the Tilman Darrell’s of the world.
