  1. Kalonji says:

bernews, for a Bermudian someone like me who lives abroad, this is great and exceptional. I want to thank you lot in advance for your nonpartial news coverage, particularly during election time. Give thanks and keep up the positive work.

    • LostinFlatts says:

Just want to echo Kalonji – you’ve been doing a great job providing a fresh, non-partisan source of info to Bermudians local and abroad – and deserve praise for giving all of us a forum on which we can express our views. Keep up the good work!

      • Hey says:

I’m reading the PLP potshots in the above…..

They say they have improved education standards . They are in complete denial

We are going backwards fast….the results this last year were down on the year before, and this years were not good by any stretch of the imagination

        They say fast ferries…

All these pot shots are nowhere near where 14 years should have brought us…

Vote for mediocre and failing performance if you want….

If you want results, opportunities and to know where your money went VOTE OBA

        • Concerned says:

R u a teacher? I think not… have you heard of new cohort??? You can’t expect the same results from a totally different group with very different strengths and weaknesses. Change can be good and so time will tell.

      • Thank you Bernews . This is so well set out . You have reported everything in a very professional manner.

    • wize says:

      government election sight down,go figure

      • Hey says:

Congratulations to all those who won seats on both sides of the house. Now please work together for Bermudians and Bermuda. At the end of the day it is not about anything else but Bermudians and Bermuda.

PLP please learn from this and know that race, divisiveness, dirty politics are not what it is about. Rise and remember that if it benefits Bermudians then Bermuda benefits. You have a great responsibility as opposition to debate fairly for Bermudians, and not personal agendas.

Cox, Minors, Burch, and Dame J Smith being dethroned should send you a clear message that accepting responsibility for failures in financial, economic, leadership, relationship with business and education are unacceptible.

We are in a hole because of poor decisions, please ensure you work with your peers in the PLP and the OBA for Bermudians and Bermuda. Do not act like the Republican party and try to block what needs to happen. As you have witnessed in the US, it does no good to a country or a political party. You now have a big responsibility, be up to the task.

OBA, congratulations. Enjoy your night and then begin work, ready for when parliament resumes in February, because Bermuda NEEDS work. Where you can leverage the skills and ability of your opposition, please invite them to help.

We must work together, the nation demands it.

    • Clifton Philpott says:

I want to echo the comments above. I am a Bermudian living in Canada and I really appreciated the coverage.

  2. unreal says:

Critical day for Bermuda……remember this not a beauty pageant. Consider the impact your vote will have on the future of this island.

Do we want a new direction or maintain the status quo?
Do you reward poor performance or give someone else an opportunity to lead?

There are many pitfalls to rewarding poor performance as there is no motivation to change or improve.

    Vote Wisely Bermuda!

    • Hey says:

PLP already crashed the plane and did not take out insurance.

      • Hey says:

Aren’t you sick of the PLP divisiveness, the cover ups, the undelivered promises, the missing $600 million, the debt we face and pay for every day, the plans to plan to plan a plan, the failure to have PATI in place since 2003, the we had to fool you, the hate, the overspends, the unemployment, the closing of businesses, the investors not investing in us because of the governments ways of doing business, the missing financials, the dirty financials, the destruction of St Georges, the crime, gun crime, no jobs for our people leaving school, 14 years of education…look at those results it’s a diservice to us, and so much more………

When the OBA say change, they don’tt mean change for changes sake, they mean change for all our sakes. If the PLP get in the people lose and Bermuda loses. The truth always comes out in the end and the truth if the PLP get in it will be discoved too late to do anything about it.

We have to act NOW, TODAY and have Bermudians working for Bermuda, not cheap imported labour to build things as is planned, we have to take our country back from the few who are benefitting, to make sure that we all benefit and noone falls through the cracks. If you love Bermuda and Bermudians, then there is only one way to vote….and that is for the OBA. Those who are too young to vote are counting on you.

        I pray for us all.

  3. groovy says:

    OBA!

  4. concerned citizen says:

Very sad to see the OBA banner defaced in St. George’s. Come on, Bermuda – we are better than that. This is an important day for all Bermudians and we should respect each other and our votes.

    • fox_gap_2 says:

IT IS SAD INDEED……..AND THE ONE OF CRAIG CANNONIER IN FLATTS HAS BEEN DEFACED TOO, SURPRISED BERNEWS HASNT PUT THAT ONE UP YET…SAME COLOR SPRAY PAINT AS WELL SO ITS PROB THE SAME JACKAR$E…

      • BERR says:

Has to be some juvenile doing this as only a person with such immaturity would attempt this. Note the PLP banner’s are not attacked….this is an unemployed vandal surprisingly with so much time on their hands to go out and deface these posters.

        • swing voter says:

maybe that ‘secret’ report does have some merit….at least one person that fits into that catagory of ‘uneducated’ voter or whatever the term is to describe nasty individuals that behave in this manner. I’m hopeful that we don’t eventually see the hooliganism displayed in politics to the south of us. ps a family member called me a defector, flip-flopper, traitor all in the same sentence this morning….my response….you’ll thank me and other swing voters within 24months from today ;-)

          • BERR says:

@ wing voter: Good for you it is refreshing to hear this and the pressures of voting by family members is all too real. But it is time to THINK for yourself and for the future of this country. This is no longer a recession, this will be the way of life and the norm for all of us and generations to come if we don’t make a change NOW.

        • smh says:

sounds about right. Anyone who openly supports PLP is clearly stupid so what more can you expect, but stupidity

          • Hey says:

Not true, there are good and honest and intelligent people who support the PLP too. Most of them financially benefit from it, so they are in it for themselves and not the good of the people as the party pretends!

    • Tolerate says:

I also saw this on my way to work. I don’t remember a prior election held with so much hate and nastiness. To me it’s not sad, but scary. What may take place if the OBA win? To think we have such fanatics in our society that don’t respect the rights of people to vote, or follow a party that is not theirs. I would be embarrassed as the PLP to feel I have attracted such individuals, but they have to admit their part in creating such an environment.
As a swing voter with no allegiance to any political party, this type of action does not help your party but discredits it. Grow up and show respect for ALL Bermudians.
      Shameful.

      • Amazed says:

There is plenty of blame to go around for the prevailing attitudes. Everyday people on these blogs disrespect each other so it is no surprise that this type of stuff is happening. When people are attacked because their beliefs are different from some one elses then they will retaliate. It has been going on here for months hopefully it will alll be over soon!!

        • Tolerate says:

          Yup

          • Hey says:

When someone says $1.5Billion of debt is an investment in Bermuda, you have to call them on that…IT IS A BURDEN that it is called DEBT ….if it was an investment it would generate the money to repay the interest and Principal, plus some. This debt doesn’t.

We have spent it, All of it has gone.

This is not disrepecting anyone, it is a FACT..when people say otherwise…you have to wonder.

        • Sandgrownan says:

That’s why though. People are basing their vote on emotion and perceived fear, not on rational thought.

          • argosy says:

….and don’t forget that sentiment that CANNOT be called a distraction – RACE! He was up there waving his clenched fist in the air.

            • Hey says:

We are voting for Bermuda and Bermudians, if we don’t, thern Bermuda Will fall futher into the hole.

  5. In Mark's Opinion says:

    My vote is in.

    • Autumn Fire says:

Congrats to all FIRST TIME VOTERS! You are the new political parties of Bermuda – keep involved in the political decisions of your Country, and let your voices be heard – it’s your future, young Bermudians!

  6. VOTE FOR CHANGE says:

If you don’t vote for change, there will be NO change.

If you are Happy with No change then please state your reasons below as to why.

  7. levern says:

I have just cast my ballot and feeling very empowered, please go vote.

  8. GOD 1st says:

People are starting to deface OBA banners early in the morning SMH

  9. Former Union Member says:

I voted early in Constituency 25. Many there in advance of the doors opening waiting patiently. Both candidates there greeting. It was refreshing to see politeness on all sides…none of the racial comments so evident in the PLP rally this weekend. Bermudians are better than that!

  10. concerned ambassador says:

Please vote for change! As a taxi driver and a past plp supporter I can’t take anymore!

    • frank says:

your probly one of those fools that sit a elbow all day run town and back

      • argosy says:

        say something meaningful, Frank.

Oh, you can’t…..then just shut up and go away please.

  11. Encyclopedia says:

Your coverage of the final PLP and OBA rally in both video and audio was exceptional.

Even with the limited resources, you achieved something great.

  12. BDAHermit says:

    PLP thugs at it again.

  13. Patricia says:

I still undecided but with all this nonsense going on with defacing signs and racial comments i might just vote for change. Cant stand what this island has become if people have to stoop so low.

    • Sandgrownan says:

How anyone can be undecided at this point is beyond me.

  14. Dana says:

Seeing the OBA banner defaced in St. George’s shows the childish, immature mentality of some during selction time. You know what they say, when someone shows you who they really are, believe them!!!

    • East End Girl says:

Dana.. I sooooo agree with you.. I was appalled that someone would do such a thing…

  15. New Bermudian says:

I heard that a voter wearing an OBA shirt was told at the polling station in her PLP-held constituency to cover it up. I thought that one could wear anything they wished to the polling station!!!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

To be fair “I heard” is not fact though with the sign defacing etc. going on it should not be too surprising if true.

      Desperation to the bitter end.

    • outsiDe man says:

That never happened. Stop spitting out poison.

      • New Bermudian says:

I wish it was just spitting poison. Stay tuned for the news, I heard it first hand. I suppose it’s fiction then that the OBA posters of Davis and Cannonier were defaced? SMH. The reality is that freedom of expression, like freedom of speech, is stifled under the current regime. So, vote for the ‘green’ party, watch people see ‘red’. Doesn’t matter if they’re out now or at the next election, the decline has begun. What will matter is who’s left to admire their handiwork.

      • New Bermudian says:

Oh- and just because you wouldn’t do it (I hope), or you don’t want to believe one of your ‘family’ would, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I don’t see any green signs defaced, has it been tit for tat, then? I haven’t heard of any PLP supporters being effectively bullied by the opposition, have you? Hm.

Poison? I spat nothing at all until I had the temerity to marry a foreigner, a white person, whose rights and dignity have consistently and without fail been violated since he arrived. Does he have a voice? Nope. Poison? I wouldn’t have any if the economy were in good shape, if my child would be safe in this education system (I mean personally and academically!), if my spouse were treated as anyone would expect to be treated…so, yeah. I think I have a right. Of course, a right to self-expression, a right to freedom of speech, to freedom of belief only exists for some of ‘us’, am I right? SMH. And before you suggest that I pack my things and head to the airport, my family and I have just as much right to be here as you. We stay out of the possibly vain belief that we can make a difference.
The incident I describe most certainly DID happen. I won’t name names out of respect for the friend, but it was at an East End polling station.

    • 1st Time Voter says:

No colors to be shown for poll workers. My wife is a volunteer at our polling place today. She was asked not to wear Red or Green. She wore blue.

Why would we not want independent international observers of our elections?

      • New Bermudian says:

I think they were uniformed at my polling station. All blue. Nice shirts, actually!

  16. Triangle Drifter says:

Your 1 day in 1825 days to actually have a say. Don’t waste it.

  17. Bermudian husband says:

My husband’s address in the parliamentary register was switched from his correct address in a marginal seat to his old address in a safe seat…hmmm…questionable?! And apparently he is not the first person that this has happened to today!!

    • Let me get this str8 says:

Make sure to report such anomalies.

There is a reason no International observers were welcome to partake thsi time round.

Hell even the US election had such observers. Funny how the PLP has kept quiet about that fact despite the fact that they persitently try to align themsels with Pres. Obama. But then again Pres. Obama, on his very first day in office, signed into act the freedom of Information Act while the PLP has refused to implement PATI since Prem. Alex Scott introduced it in 2003.

They only make themselves look guilty with such nonsense. It is a shame though that the same peope whi are hurting the most from their actions will vote them back in today. A damn shame for BDA as a whole.

    • concerned citizen says:

Yes – please make sure to report this. I have passed it on but it is important that this is made known to the registrar. This election needs to be conducted fairly and accurately. If you do not report it, then it will be allowed.

      • Bermudian husband says:

After many phone calls from others, he called the registrar himself and reported it. They did note that there was something on his file and would call him back – he is now in the correct constituency and has voted. If anyone else runs into this problem, call the registrar’s office immediately and report it.

        • concerned citizen says:

Thank you for posting this and good luck to Bermuda today!

    • Amazed says:

This is not the place to report this! Contact the appropriate office asap!

  18. BDAHermit says:

Wow,#10 at Sommersfield was as fast and efficient as I’ve ever seen. Took me less than 15 mins. Dunkley and Minors were both there and I talked with them both.

Looks like low turnout so far, most of the voters there at the time were white middle aged or older seniors of both races. Im sure turnout will get better later in the day.

    • argosy says:

      …maybe not.

Many PLP supporters cannot bring themselves to vote for the OBA but will not vote for the PLP – they will simply abstain. Watch for very low turnout Island-wide, which will hurt the PLP. IMHO!

  19. argosy says:

……….yes. This election is historical on the basis that no bullets were mailed to any candidates! Go figure!!

    • navin johnson says:

closest thing to bullets was the ficticous mega pier from Mr Roban

  20. Keeper says:

Think about it…..who in their right mind would let a pilot who has only been in flight school for a year get a job flying a commercial jumbo jet and he has not even flown a plane outside of a simulator. The OBA is a big joke! If it sounds to good to be true it usually is. They are clueless. The PLP may not have done everything right but at least you get what you see. Historically, the UBP, or shall I say the OBA’s parent company, were known for their underhanded dealings and bad judgment on many issues, revamping the school system for one and they were not nailed to the cross for it.

    • Let me get this str8 says:

That airplane captain analogy must be within the numerous PLP emails being sent out to its supporters.

You are the third person today to say it in the exact same manner.

And your current captains, who have so much experience, has crash landed the plane and stole all the parachutes and floatation devices during the whole ordeal leaving the rest of us to fend for ourselves. That is unless you are part of the F&F plan or have your cushy Government pension.

Don’t worry you guys will win and BDA will continue to lose.

      BDA all the way!!!

    • navin johnson says:

think about it who in their right mind would want to fly in a plane piloted by someone who has crashed and burned many times…..and with Marc Bean as the air traffic controller

    • Family Man says:

We made that mistake in 1998 by letting an inexperienced team take the reigns. How’s that working out for everyone?

Time to change the flight crew.

    • Who Done it says:

So you are saying that in 1998 the PLP should never have been elected? Really a load of sugar coated stuff…

      • argosy says:

…and Barak Obama should not have beed elected for his first term in 2008.

Pure PLP non-thinking from Mark Bean!

        Dumb & dumber!

        • Hey says:

USA needed change and voted for OBAMA

Bermuda needs change and votes for OBA. Go Bermuda!!!!

  21. bdian says:

Thanks for the photos Bernews. Now I can recognize the candidates when I walk in to vote! I haven’t had one candidate visit me this election. Maybe I am just lucky. :-)

  22. GOD 1st says:

c # 3 we have a PLP Supporter marching up and down and ranting PLP with a big PLP poster.

  23. GOD 1st says:

    Gaylene you are Beautiful

  24. rme says:

do i give my gov another chance (3 strikes and your out?) or do i put the other party in with a plan that does explain how they are gonna do anything! seems lose lose to me! should i even bother voting

    • concerned citizen says:

Your government has already had three strikes (1998, 2003 and 2007), so by your comment you should vote them out. Where’s the harm in trying out a new party that has a good platform for creating jobs and growing the economy, which are the issues that most Bermudians care about? If you are unsatisfied with their performance in the next election, then you can exercise your vote to get them out as well. And they are definitely not racist – just look at the candidates – they represent black, white, Portuguese, ALL Bermudians. They are a party of inclusion, not exclusion. Give them a chance – they want to put Bermuda first for all Bermudians.

  25. rme says:

not to mention the other party is just the old racist UBP with some photo shopping !!!!

  26. Encyclopedia says:

I second that…Gaylene is very beautiful

    • Country boy says:

      I third that.

      • Honestly says:

U may think she is beautiful! She stood in a corner all day. I went by again…same place! Neva saw her at my house. Mmm I think she is just filling the space! She should have gone out of her way to greet ppl as I didn’t see her until I left and drove off!

  27. KitCat says:

First time voter here, and it felt great to finally be able to participate in a democratic process. However, as one of many Bermudian students, I was lucky that my flight had already been booked to return for Christmas just in time for the election when it was announced. So many of our young citizens have been denied their right to vote this year and in the past because we do not have an absentee ballot.

There were alternative dates for travelers, but this also requires the additional waste of money and time during a time which for many is already stressful due to the proximity of deadlines and exams. Many families simply cannot afford that extra plane ticket, and students can’t afford the time away from their studies.

Consider that these disenfranchised voters represent Bermuda’s future. They are off at school working hard to achieve degrees and academic success so that they can return to the island and contribute to its economy. It is nothing less than the deprivation of their rights as a citizen to not be afforded the opportunity to have a say in the future of the country where they will eventually return to live, work, and become a part of the community.

We need an absentee ballot. Right away. They’re not particularly a new idea, most other developed countries have them in some form or another. We cannot continue to alienate citizens from the democratic process and then complain when they become alienated from society as a whole. Let’s move into the 21st century, please?

    • LostinFlatts says:

This is a point that needs addressing, regardless of who wins this election. There is absolutely no reason that we can’t come up with an affordable, efficient and reliable means of absentee voting. Almost every other major western country has managed it.

The worry is that when the current government win today, it’s not really in their best interest. I’m not convinced that the PLP have a lot to gain from enabling Bermudians abroad getting education/experience to vote. And if it’s not in their best interest, you can be damn sure the PLP won’t act.

  28. Don Mackenzie says:

Let us hope that whoever wins, they will ensure that all Bermudians are included in resolvng our pressing issues. No one group (black or white) can solve our isues alone and the divisiveness (particularly promoted by the PLP)is not moving us forward.

If we do get another 5 years of PLP, they need to get the race card issue put away so that all voters can simply vote on which party offers the best solutions (rather than having race be such a determining factor in the election).

    • argosy says:

      Don, with respect, you’re dreaming!

If they win, it ain’t gonna happen, mate.

  29. BDAHermit says:

Wow I just saw Ewart Brown eating lunch at Speciality Inn right next to me with a bunch of others. Go there every day almost at the same time for lunch and haven’t seen him there until today.

    hmmmm……

  30. BDAHermit says:

Poor confident Diallo is going to lose big today…

  31. me says:

I am loving the feeling of CHANGE in the air! VOTE OBA!

  32. Mom's Gingerbread says:

It’s sad to see the OBA posters defaced, Just vote for who you support. Unfortunately the small number of PLP supporters who are doing this nonsense is hurting the image of the PLP, Stop ya foolish childish idiotic ways

  33. ....... says:

@ New Berudian…all this complaining I can’t help but wonder why you are still living here in Bermuda it seems you have a second option with your husband who is a foreigner why not just up and leave and then maybe you would be happier. Can’t stand a spoiled cry baby…..

    • Bermuda Is Another World... says:

@ …. No one should have to leave the country where they BELONG just because they happen to voice their concerns. People like you need to grow up and help the problem, not make it worse. It starts with embracing ALL Bermudians.

  34. FrankTalk says:

    Correction for Mr Cannnonier:

The right to vote wasn’t given to anyone in Bermuda it was won through the hard work, dedication and sacrifice of those that came before us.

  35. swing voter says:

yeah its gonna happen…..the surveys are accurate within a few percentage points….swing voters are the most powerful group on island. We took the UBP out in 1998 now its time to take the ‘hijacked’ PLP out in 2012. Swing Voters put country before party politics.

  36. help says:

I need help knowing were to go vote
I live in devonshire dock hill area do I go to prospect primary school to go and vote

  37. why says:

Why are you people supporting the OBA do you think change will come. what would you do if don’t see the change they are talking about
Are you still going to blame the government for the problems that are happening in BDA.

    • bdian says:

Absolutely. And we won’t be foolish enough to call them “family”.

    • Bermuda Is Another World... says:

At least if we give them a chance, we have to option to vote the PLP or someone else in next time. Bermuda is seriously in trouble, and the problems are getting worse, not better. It starts with the people at the top and filters down. Even some of the people who have been in trouble with the law recently are related to quite a few of the current party members. Why is that?

    • George says:

      Who’s ‘you people’?

    • Dana says:

@why – Yes, because it is the current government that has put Bermuda in this situation with their over spending. You need to take off your rose coloured glass- oh sorry bottle greeen coloured glasses and look at the fact that we were in the red UNDER the current government before the recession.

  38. Yng Black Mind says:

People – just stop talking and allow the election process to complete – not need for either party and it’s supporter to sit on here and provide “crap” commentary – I am sick of it – so just stop – it is so unnecssary.

    Yng Black Mind

It is what it is – whatever happens is going to happen

    • George says:

Unfortunately Yng Black Mind the amount of tension/division that this election has created is not going to dissipate by the end of the day.

So be prepared for a lot more of the ‘crap’, especially if the PLP win the majority of seats and the OBA win the popular vote!

There are a lot of unhappy people out there from all sections of the community so ……………..hope you built up a thick skin in the last few months in order to deal with it!

    • Come Correct says:

Thank you, I agree with you to the fullest extent. Ive never wanted to move away from Bermuda, my home, my paradise I used to brag about, but now with all the divisiveness, I’d rather go live in a forest away from everyone. THIS IS NOT LIFE!

  39. PLPVoter says:

Good luck to all, may the better party win!!!!

    • Come Correct says:

      rme wasnt good enough?

      • Divisiveness says:

What a hypocrite. At post 4:12pm you appeared to sympathize with “Yng Black Mind” and blog about not typing crap commentary. Then at post 4:13pm you typed how you really feel in that sick pathetic little head commenting about “PLPVOTER” What happened mom and dad didn’t bestow enough attention growing up as a child? Before you say anything stupid, not that I care because I voted UBP last time and now I’m voting OBA for change. Let me put it to you SIMPLE, it’s twisted minds like yours that drum up the emotions of blacks on this beautiful Island we call home. Now go live in that forest you typed about I’ll be at Vasco for the after party.

        • Come Correct says:

Uh plpvoter is under the name rme above…have fun tonight?

    • indeed says:

      They did.

  40. Who wrote the report? says:

    Good luck to all.

And can we please remember that no matter who you support, we are all Bermudian in the end and we all want the same thing. That is the best for Bermuda. One side is not he enemy and the other isn’t out to you.

    Merry Xmas to all

    • Who wrote the report? says:

But I have to say the PLP tweets are getting quite pathetic…

      • Mafew says:

        Was just gonna say!

        • Roger says:

No class, no grace, no idea how adults should behave towards those contributing towards their economy from overseas

  41. Regardless of the above comments,I say after this night Bermuda will have spoken and regardless who is the Government we in this country will have to deal with it bad, good or in-different.

  42. Yng Black Mind says:

    Bernews:

Just a little correction – Going in to this election, the breakdown of seats is as follows:

The PLP have 23 seats (Wayne Furbert was UBP at the last election)
The OBA have 1 seat (Bye Election in Const #12 – Craig C)
The UBP have 13 seats (including Kim and Charlie Swan as they were UBP at the last election)

I just wanted to be fair and honest about it – those OBA MPs were elected as UBP members and it should be reflected as such.

    Yng Black Mind
    (those who know understand)

    • Wicked says:

Wow.. you must love hearing yourself talk too.. LOL

      • Yng Black Mind says:

        @Wicked:

Are you a complete, useless a@@? My comment was simple and clear – are you not able to comprehend the simple language used?

I simply pointed out the reality of the seats before the election – - highlighting that Wayne Furbert and the rest of the old UBP won their seats under that banner – how was that not fair?

I was going to write something witty, but it has been a long time, with election results – - so I will just say shut up and go back under that rock you came from – simple.

        • Moojun says:

Well said Yng Black Mind. And trust me, your original post got across just fine for most. The news media has to be reliable, timely and independent. In a small community like Bermuda we are all contributing editors. Ignore the ignoramus is the best advice that I can give.

          • Bernews says:

Just as point of clarity for anyone reading the seat numbers we gave were completely correct. The PLP held 24 seats going in, OBA 10.

The way our system presently runs, MPs can ‘party hop’ and the seat is then carried to the other party. EG: When the OBA formed they immediately became the official opposition and were duly sworn in at Government House, even though the OBA, at that time, had not won a single seat.

Supporters and political pundits have their differing opinions on this of course, but technically the PLP went in with 24, and the OBA 10. We have noted many times some were won under different parties, and said that would be expected to impact in our seat breakdown.

    • concerned bermudiana says:

      Don’t forget Darius Tucker

    • Katlyn says:

This is like saying it realy is this time, when the clocks go back for daylight savings. It is not what it was it is what is is now.

  43. Its De Kid says:

It don’t make a difference who wins cause this island is still going to have the same problems that we have now. More people will be out of a job or don’t have a job even though they have the education or not nothing is not going to change nor for the better I’m just going to take it as it comes so congratulation to both party.

  44. CFC_BLU says:

Time for change; time for my kids to have a better future. OBA ALL THE WAY!!

  46. BermyBoy says:

Thank you for the constantan and unbiased updates. We the abroad college students greatly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this moment of history. Bless Up

  47. GOD 1st says:

Why in the world was the agents told to get out of the polling booth for the counts. I sense a haughty spirit

  48. JayP_OBA says:

SMH! Its a shame how uneducated voters will have a disturbing effect on this election. I’m talking about those individuals who will vote emotionally and on a single topic, as opposed to the whole picture. BERMUDA needs Help!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Ain’t that the truth! Makes one question the wisdom on one man one vote? Way back the property owners had a ‘plus’ vote. The reasoning being that they had much more to lose from bad government.

Look who is losing the most today. The smart money sold out & left at least 5 years ago.

    • Mike says:

Perhaps they should restrict voters to a check list of quantifications.

  49. Mike says:

Paula Cox has lost her seat?

    • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

Yup, although many didn’t have any time for her – I actually thought she did a good job given the sorry state of the island that Dr. Brown left the island in.

Paul , Vance and a few of the others seemed to have some sense of business.

Allthoug, I did not vote PLP this time let me be the first to say thank you to Paula for all of her hard work. I know you gave up alot , and I know you were in it for the good of the country. I only wish others in your party had the same morals and intergrity.

  50. Optimistic says:

COME ON PLP!!!!!!! The OBA are not serious. All the supporters on this site are idiots

    • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

Still think they are not serious?

    • Katlyn says:

Here goes this mentality of name calling.Takae a page from yhe OBA last night in their hour of victory there was no name calling. If you have nothing good to say say nothing.
Simply the people have spoken.Get on with it,and regrets to the PLP.

  51. Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

  57. So Tired says:

So Wayne, when you moving over?

  58. Mark w says:

Can we now have OBA and PLP rather than the often mentioned OBA/PLP and the lesser mentioned PLP/UBP

  59. wonder why says:

Now the plot thickens. just hope with this change it is for the better, but ask yourself this question what happens to the middle to lower class.

  60. GOD 1st says:

It has always been the OBA , just a few liars tried to deceive the community SMH

  61. GOD 1st says:

We are not accepting wayne no way lol you are got to be joking

  62. GOD 1st says:

    furbert that is

  63. Triangle Drifter says:

Sooooo….How’s that victory party going outside of Alaska Hall? At least their supporters won’t have to be deceived when they get a new leader. All backroom meetings are off. They will have to fight amongst themselves to get a new leader.

Who might it be???? Zane???? Wouldn’t that be something for the PLP!!!

  64. GOD 1st says:

Patrice minors ,michael weeks go and get a job.No more free money

  65. Groundhog says:

BerNews, CONGRATULATIONS for running such great election-night coverage! The Government website, despite having many IT so-called “specialists” on hand and a huge budget financing it, flunked miserably.

  66. Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

  74. SADDENED says:

    SAD DAY FOR BERMUDA!!!

  75. Mr Happy says:

Congratulations to the OBA. Now get out there and change things. And be honest and transparent about it. But seriously, congrats.

    Great Day for Bermuda!!!

  77. MAKE MY DAY says:

The party of deceivers, liers and thieves have FINALLY gone!!!

***COMMON SENSE HAS PREVAILED AND A NEW BEGINNING FOR BERMUDA IS NOW GOING TO TAKE PLACE***!!!!

The IB sector and overseas investors will also be extremely happy!!!!

  78. Groundhog says:

Renee Webb, on the people at Vasco: “You can see it’s the UBP” Lord, woman, give it up already! The freakin’ UBP doesn’t exist any more! Get over yourself!

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

Renee Webb and the rest of the PLP “clan” are yesterday’s history!!!

  79. Triangle Drifter says:

I don’t envy the OBA at all. They have a huge steaming pile of manure to go through. In 1998 the PLP was handed the keys to a car that was running pretty good. They abused & trashed it. Now the OBA has to take it down to bare frame & rebuild all the while somehow keeping it moving.

  80. MAKE MY DAY says:

First order of the day for the OBA…. AUDIT ALL THE GOV’T ACCOUNTS FOR THE LAST 14 YEARS!!!

Where did ALL the missing $$$ go????????

    • US Observer says:

      Heads start rolling…

      • Moojun says:

Look, we haven’t got time for retribution. Let’s just focus on getting the Bermuda Economic revenue engine started again so that the average Bermudian can earn a living off its momentum. we’ve just been thrown a lifeline, let’s not waste it on trying to hang the dead.

        • Bdabdabdabda says:

The “dead” aren’t dead, they have your tax money and you have their deficit. Recouping what has been stolen is a critical lesson for future generations. Bermuda must do both to survive.

  81. At Peace says:

Congratulations all around! The people of Bermuda must be patient, changes will not come overnight. Be gracious to the other party and remember we are to stand united in returning Bermuda to it’s Glory! Blessed evening and Happy Holiday’s to all.

  82. Proud to be Bermudian (again!) says:

    Oh happy day!!!!

  83. More with less says:

Unreal, I am in disbelief! This is a great Christmas! Mrs. Cox was wrong, this election was indeed about change! Guess corn beef cakes and baked beans is different than corn beef cakes and corn. lol Thank you people of Bermuda for waking up and understanding what was truly happening to this island.

  84. SHOTTTTTTTSSSSSSS says:

    SHOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS tequila

  85. skeptical says:

Does anyone hear the sound of paper shredding?
OBA must audit all accounts to get the real look at our finances. PATI must be first on the table to be put through with OBA touches to it!!

  86. Hudson says:

Well done on the election coverage Bernews – once again, a primary source of up to date information. Thanks!

  87. Truth is killin' me... says:

Bermuda…you needed this. Change had to come. There was too much bull$h!t going on. The OBA will need time to pick up the pieces however they better not get COMPLACENT! Merry Christmas Paula and Ewart!!!

  88. swing voter says:

THANK YOU SWING VOTERS FOR SENDING A MESSAGE….IF YOU DON’T DO THE JOB YUR OUR ON YUR AZZ

  89. SoMuchMore says:

…PLP is scard! Numbers will be reviled! Congrats OBA! I am jumping for JOY – there is light and promise ahead!

  90. Bermudican says:

There are a lot of friends i have scattered across the planet , i hope that they all read this and cen realize their dreams. ii would also like to encourage the young Simons candiadte to stick with it because he made many good points ….
    Yay Bermuda!

  91. OpressedCongratulations Glen says:

Many, many thanks to the OBA for all their hard work. You guys rock!
Now we can start to rebuild Bermuda back to what it should be.

To dr brown and the PLP, you have almost destroyed this island, please do not stand in the way of the monumantal task that lies ahead of MY Government in the rebuilding of Bermuda.

  92. skeptical says:

Patriots clinched a playoff spot and the OBA win!!! Life is great :)

  93. MAKE MY DAY says:

WOW….. I am opening the **CHAMPAGNE** here in Arizona!!! And I will also smoke a couple of cigars!!!

    CONGRATULATIONS OBA AND BERMUDA!!!!

  94. Virginia says:

Job well done on the election coverage Bernews!

  95. Barracuda says:

The young voters have spoken . no race thanks.

  96. Richard says:

Congrats to the UBP before anyone jump on me I voted for the OBA now start treating your voters like se have some sense. Wish you the best it not going to be easy.

    • Barracuda says:

I guess all the trolls are either gone, or in the Opposition.

  97. Withheld says:

    This gives me hope

  98. East End Girl says:

A very special congrats to Nandi and Suzzane I am very pleased at the outcome of the OBA win… Now lets work together and make change for a better Bermuda…

  99. James Goodfellow says:

    Good riddance you devils.

    • Disgusted says:

Devils ?! Really….Congrats to the OBA but if comments like this represent the mindset of your supporters this island has deeper issues than our economy. At some point our economy will flourish again but indiviuals like goodfellow will create a toxic environment for future generations no mattervwhst our surplus may be.

  100. SoMuchMore says:

Yeah where are all the PLP people now? I don’t see any comments… hmmmmmmmm they must be all in the offices helping to shred the paper they dont want anyone to see LOL

  101. James Goodfellow says:

Ewart Brown has tarnished the PLP into a party that is blighted with racism, cronyism. lies, scandal, and the rest. This was a legitimate working class party that should have maintained power for 50 + years but the people have voted.
Paula should not be blamed, the finger points at the Doctor for you are the one the brought down the PLP. Now bugger off to T&C or Cayman and never come back.

  102. Building a better Bermuda says:

    Congratulations:

    - BerNews and Royal Gazette for keeping us covered and up-to-date, when even the gov website couldn’t handle to web load, at least they have a few years before they need to focus on financing a proper infrastructure for the next election

    - OBA for your momentous win, and for proving that like Obama, you can win with a campaign focused on issues over a campaign designed to divide and conquer with devisive rhetoric and distraction

Now we have a long road ahead, and unfortunately we will still have to travel a little further downhill before we can get back up, so enjoy the night, but be ready to work in a few hours. You have a tight government, and remember, those of us that put you in can take you out should you be trying to pull a PLP on us.

My hope is that you can get the books in order quickly, to see what our true state is. Hopefully you can give us clearer view than the frosted window the PLP has had installed.

To the PLP, I am not saddened by your loss, it was entirely your own making. Those of us that are apolitical, will decide who runs the government have grown tired of your divisive politics and campaigning and have had our say. You had the chance to run on substance, but decided to focus on distraction with the ‘secret report’ and UBP conspiracy. Even now I still hear the words UBP uttered as those who beat you, but in the end it was their willingness to leave the past and evolve into the OBA and your own nature that defeated you. Perhaps if you could learn from the UBP lesson and not just try a superficial change, but evolve yourself into a better philosophy, you might just help create a better government for the people. But this would require a deep commitment to the belief of country before party and recognizing/understanding that just because you win an election, doesn’t mean you are the country. Oh, that and clear out the cronies. Bermudians wanted justice and not ‘just us’.

Everybodies voice is important, a statement to both parties.

  103. John E. Thorne says:

Bermuda’s future is now brighter! What a wonderful christmas present for all of Bermuda!

  104. Taxi Owner says:

    Morning Laverne Furbert! You ok?

  105. Jango says:

Leave Wayne alone. In his words he wants what is best for Bermuda so he will cross over. So will Zane. As for the defacing of the posters. It was the work of adults I did not personally see an act but I heard one so called respectable PLP official shout profanity at someone to remove OBA posters that he had displayed on his property.

    • The Truthsayer says:

And you think they both will be welcome…I think not!!

  106. New Start says:

Hopefully this will mark a new beginning for Bermuda and we will be able to start to work our way back out of the hole that we have fallen into over the last few years :-)

OBA – I’m happy for a change but you better serve our country the right way ! Bermuda has been screwed by every political party over the years – please think of all the people’s best interests!

Just an observance: My family and I have never, ever been visited by the PLP – don’t know why – seems like they lost out on votes by only focusing on certain people. The OBA and independent constituents actually took the time to know my name BEFORE I went to vote and to talk to me about their platform.

  107. BDAHermit says:

To be fair to Laverne, unlike most of the PLP, she actually put out a statement on the Bermuda Election 2012 Facebook Page and here it is:

“Let me be the first (I think) as a PLP supporter to say that I am very sad about the outcome of the election. I have been very supportive of my party, on this site and on talk radio, and of late my mantra has been a vote for the OBA is a vote back to the UBP. I still belive that. But the voters have spoken, and have sent a message to the PLP.

I will say that it for me it is bittersweet, as I’ve been working with Rolfe Commissiong since January and he is/was one of the successful candidates.

But, as Maya Angelou said, “And still I rise”.”

  108. Autumn Fire says:

Now can we open the housing market so everyone can sell to anyone so we can get this real estate mess fixed!

    • bermerican says:

As someone who has recently moved back to the island after being away since i was 4, can you explain to me how selling the limited land we have to foreigners serves to help the island as a whole?

  109. doomed says:

Can’t wait till everyone sees how completely full of $#!^ the OBA turns out to be. I hope i’m wrong, God i hope i’m wrong.

  110. The Truthsayer says:

You can almost hear the hum of the paper shredders on Court Street
