[Updated] A pair of sailors returning from Bermuda to the United States were rescued by the US Coast Guard on Friday [July 4] after their sailboat became stranded in a storm surge from Hurricane Arthur.

Two Canadians on board had sailed to Bermuda for a race according to the Newsday report. US Coast Guard officers from the Montauk Marine Base in New York rescued the sailboat after its engines died about 35 miles off Montauk.

Update 1.57pm: A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “The SV GLIM which took part in the Newport to Bermuda race left Bermuda on Sunday 29th June towards Long Island, New York, with 2 persons onboard.

“On Monday 30th, the yacht reported failed engine when only 125nm NW of Bermuda and continued sailing onwards. The vessel’s position and condition onboard were monitored with concern as Tropical Storm and then Hurricane ARTHUR formed on Tuesday 1st July, forecast to turn and move directly across the path of the yacht.

“Eventually the GLIM made it as far as 20 miles from the coast of the U.S.A., where it was taken in tow by USCG and made safe arrival at it’s destination. Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre were kept informed of progress by a local person in touch with the yacht and coordinated with USCG for the vessel’s safe arrival without incident.”

Thankfully the US Coast Guard can come to the assistance of yachtsmen in trouble. We can not rely on Bermuda to come to our assistance. The Commodore of my club, BBIRYC, will soon be announcing funding for a private coast gaurd to be based in Bermuda on Commodore JB’s private island in Bermuda.

It was 20 miles off the coast of the US when they caught up to the boat. Why would Bermuda go to save them ? Lol idiot.

Because you don’t agree with something someone has to say direst make them an idiot. Grow up, will you! SMH

It’s a sail boat. By the time they actually needed help it was 20 miles from the US… The engine failed. It’s a sail boat. Doesn’t need an engine to travel. Not like the sail and the engine failed…. Bermuda has tug boats. Where I’m sure if they needed help when they first broke down they would of went to help. Have faith in Bermuda :) lol
