Trial Dates Set For Eight Gun Suspects

At this morning’s [Apr.1] Supreme Court arraignment session, seven men and one female charged with firearm related offences had their trial dates set.

Marico Bassett who has already been on trial for the shooting of Randy Lightbourne in July 2010, will be sent for re-trial on 30th May 2011. Mr Bassett’s first trial on this matter resulted in a hung jury on the attempted murder charge.

The duo of Jah’Mico Jahmah Trott and Dunn-ya Rolando Taylor will both go to trial on 18th April. On October 18, 2010, the two men were charged in relation to the shooting of David Godwin in September 2010.

Jakai Harford had a trial date set for 27th August 2011. Mr Harford has been charged with possession of cocaine and cannabis, as well as possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Noet Alexander Barnett was charged with the attempted murder of Jeremiah Dill on 4th October 2010, using a firearm in that attempt, and unlawfully handling a firearm. Mr Barnett pleaded not guilty to all three charges and his trial was set for July 2011.

Leo Burgess, aged 17, was charged with aggravated burglary and possession or handling of a firearm on 6th December 2010. He pleaded not guilty to both charges and his trial was set for June 2011.

Kofi Omar Dill and the lone female appearing on gun charges, Thayja Simons, were jointly charged with handling a firearm and handling ammunition. Both of them, in turn, pleaded not guilty to each of the two charges. Their trial was set for 22nd August 2011.

All of the defendants will remain in custody until their trial dates.

    This just goes to show that the justice system does work! Nobody can transform Bermuda over night it takes time and patience! And we are now seeing the fruits of their labour! Now, let’s sentence them, and bring on the next bunch! I have faith! Change is coming Bermuda!

    This doesn’t mean that the justice system works. May I remind you of the famous quote ” all suspects are innocent until proven guilty” therefore we won’t see I’d the justice system has worked until we see convictions becauuse everyone hailed the justice system when 5 defendants were brought before the courts for the killing of Kellon Hill at elbow beach. As you may remember 4 of those defendants were released. So convictions and not charges define weither a justice system is working!

      4 wat? graduating from university? maybe winning a post graduate scholarship? Or getting his CCNA? or an internship at PriceWater House Coopers? Or maybe receiving an acceptance letter from London School of Law? Or maybe announcing the engagement to his long time girlfriend? Or maybe………..
