Bermuda’s Jessica Lewis finished competing at the 2011 Para-Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, when she took part in the Women’s 400m final yesterday [Nov.18].

Ms Lewis finished 5th clocking a time of 1:12.90. Chelsea McClammer from the USA won her third gold medal of the Games finishing in 1:03.13, Evelyn Enciso from Mexico finished second in 1:06.94 and Yadira Soturno from Venezuela finished third in a time of 1:10.47.

Ms Lewis previously competed in the 200m, finishing 4th in a time of 38.35. She also competed in the 100m – her strongest event – and just missed out on claiming a medal by a mere .03 of a second when she finished 4th with a time of 20.78.

The 18-year-old’s appearance in the Games broke new ground for Bermuda, with Ms Lewis the first athlete to ever represent the Island in athletics at a major international para-sport championships.

“I feel very honoured and just feel glad to have made it here as I’ve worked very, very hard,” Ms Lewis said before the Games. “…I just want to show Bermudians what people with a disability can achieve here in Mexico.”
