It’s Official: Bermuda Given Paralympic Track Spot

June 2, 2012

The International Paralympic Committee has officially granted Bermuda an athletic slot for the 2012 London Paralympic Games, a spokesperson for the Bermuda Paralympic Association [BPARAS] said.

Last month we reported that 19-year-old Jessica Lewis qualified for the track and field portion of the 2012 London Paralympic Games, after clocking a time of 33.81 seconds during an overseas track meet  to reach the standard in the 200m. Ms Lewis is the first Bermudian in history to qualify for the track and field portion of the Paralympics.

A BPARAS spokesperson said, “Bermuda has been given an athletic slot for the London Paralympic Games which means all Jessica’s hard work to qualify has paid off. This is a remarkable achievement in such a short time.

“It was only in Beijing in 2008 that she was first inspired to take up wheelchair track racing as her chosen sport. She has dedicated the last few years to achieve her first goal of qualifying for London 2012. At just 19 she will go from strength to strength and we are sure we will see even greater things from her in the future.
