Health Dept. Temporarily Out Of Flu Vaccine
Due to the “enormous public response” to the recent influenza vaccine clinic the initial supply of the vaccine has been exhausted, the Department of Health said.
They said due to the vaccine will not be available at the Department of Health until further notice. They are working with the Pan American Health Organization to “source additional vaccine.”
A Health Department spokesperson said: “Due to the enormous public response to this past Saturday’s additional clinic session at the Hamilton Health Center, which saw well over 200 doses of seasonal influenza vaccine administered, the Department of Health wishes to advise the public that their initial supply of the vaccine has now been exhausted.
“Consequently no influenza vaccine will be available at the Department of Health until further notice and the previously scheduled Wednesday afternoon clinic has been postponed. The Department of Health is working with the Pan American Health Organization to source additional vaccine.
“The Department is encouraged by the level of participation in this preventive effort as it represents a well-informed community that acts appropriately and responsibly to protect its health against threats.
“It should be noted that some physician offices still have limited supplies of flu vaccine in stock. The public is advised to check with their private physician offices to confirm availability of the vaccine.
Acting Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, Dr. Cheryl Peek-Ball, said: “It is reassuring to note that when the levels of vaccination coverage are sufficiently high in a population, those individuals who cannot be vaccinated for whatever reasons are afforded some protection by those who are vaccinated. This is known as ‘herd immunity’ and is thought to be present in a community where the immunization levels approach 80% or more.”
The Department of Health said they will notify the public when a second supply of influenza vaccine arrives on the island.

This has nothing to do with the oba as the flu has had a significant increase in the us and Canada this year, oh and the order was placed while the Plp was still in government.

You think the 2012-2013 order was placed in the last 4 weeks? I had my shot in October.
I did the “drive-thru” vaccine shot when they were advertising them – went on that Saturday was in and out in 5 minutes. The reason they’re running out is that everyone has waited until the last minute to panic and get their shots.
I get a shot every year as a matter of course. Even it I get the flu it’s never as bad as I had it when I didn’t get the shot before.
Get it early when the vaccine arrives and you won’t be disappointed. OR if you do that yearly junket to black Friday sales, stop by a name brand pharmacy – they all do them for about $20 a piece and take about 15 minutes all in.
Quick Google search will reveal that this is not a uniquely Bermudian problem, and that it happens from time to time across the globe.
Flu vaccine takes a long while to make and vaccine makers don’t like having to dispose of unsold goods, so if a nasty flu goes around and there’s a rush for the vaccine there is a shortage. Without fail.

Really…with the amount of press that the “flu” has been getting..did you think only 3 (being sarcastic) people were going to show up.. ..no sense getting defensive it would have made sense to order in abundance than too order too little….and for “the love of Jesus”….this is NOT a political issue so don’t make it out to be…everything doesn’t have to be political…….oh its OBA’s fault, it’s PLP’s fault….how about that the REAL FACT is that insufficient vaccines were ordered. …IJS……

I was at a flu shot clinic before the “epidemic” broke out. You could have heard a pin drop. It’s not a case of ordering enough – it’s judging demand and not getting saddled with shots you can’t use. Once CNN and FOX news get their hands on the “epidemic” (albeit a bad season), demand goes up. They can’t predict that and do what they can with what they ordered for expected demand.
Thank God! The less MSG, formaldehyde, aluminum and mercury people get injected with the better.
