Photos: Dellwood Students Return On ‘Spirit’

Bermuda Sloop Foundation hosted their school year’s first end-of-voyage certificate ceremony at Albouy’s Point yesterday [Oct 4], with the Spirit of Bermuda arriving with a group of students from Dellwood Middle School onboard.

A spokesperson said, “These Dellwood students have helmed, hauled, coiled, scrubbed, and sailed their way to victory, overcoming hurdles since the voyage onset with inclement weather and some unproductive behaviour.

“By Tuesday afternoon, the group had fully ‘switched on’, having succumbed to the call of the sea during the offshore sail to Castle Harbour, where they toured Nonsuch Island with Senior Conservation Officer, Jeremy Madeiros.

“Wednesday’s sail led to St. George’s Harbour for snorkelling and nature walk activities at Cooper’s Island with a Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences team. Today, the students will put their new training to the test and take command of Spirit on her return sail to the Great Sound.

“As an endorsed part of the M3 experience, our “Sailing a Bermuda Sloop” curriculum incorporates STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics] education with navigation, seamanship, character education as well as Bermuda history, geography and ecology through experiential learning.”

Their Education & Programmes Manager summarises that, “The Spirit formula is powerful yet simple: we remove students from their comfort zones, empower them with real-life problem solving, and keep their minds and bodies active. The professional crew perform magic each and every day aboard.

“My hope is that each student will have encountered his own potential for greatness during the voyage. This school year is very exciting because the entire M3 population in the BPSS – about 380 students, accompanied by 54 teachers – will experience our Middle School Programme. We’re marching toward our vision of the Spirit Experience being a Rite of Passage for all public school students aged 13-14.”
