2015 Bermuda Day Race To Begin In St George

May 14, 2014

The Bermuda Half Marathon Derby Committee announced that the 2015 Appleby Bermuda Half Marathon route will be modified to begin in St. George’s.

The new route for next year — which has been officially measured and certified as a half marathon — will journey out of St. George’s, along North Shore, up Middle Road/Flatt’s Hill, down Lane Hill onto Front Street and into Hamilton along the standard route in the City, finishing at Bernard’s Park.

Bermuda Half Marathon Derby Committee President, Dr. Gina Tucker noted, “After many years of deliberation and countless requests from east end residents, we are excited to have the race come from the east next year. Most residents are unaware of the fact that the race started and/or finished in St. Georges or St. David’s for many years.

“This change will have us reignite this tradition of having the Derby start in the east. Coinciding with the Cup Match tradition, the route will alternate starting in the east and west providing a new challenge for our participants while also giving east-end residents the opportunity to enjoy watching the race from their back yards.”

This year, the Appleby Bermuda Half Marathon will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Appleby’s sponsorship of the race, a financial contribution that totals $350,000.

Dr. Tucker stated, “The success of this event would not have been possible without the appreciative support of Appleby as they have provided significant financial and volunteer support over the past 10 years. Thank you Appleby.”

This year’s race — which will take place on May 26th — will begin from Somerset and head along Somerset Road, Middle Road, Burnt House Hill, Harbour Road and into Hamilton.

The registration deadline for this year is this Friday, 16 May 2014 and the late registration deadline is Friday, 23 May 2014.

Registration after this point can only take place at the number pick-up at Appleby, Church Street Entrance, on Saturday, 23 May from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For complete registration details, go to www.bermudamarathon.bm

  1. watching says:

I get the point but I don’t like it.

    • Dreamcatcher says:

You sound like a two year old who doesn’t like broccoli.

    • Hurricane says:

@ watching, if you don’t get it, just watch.

  2. Dreamcatcher says:

This should make the race very interesting for all recurring participants. Change of scenery is a plus!

  3. Your joking says:

Not sure I like this….As a runner and ran the race last year (which is an awesome experience)..I would like to judge my performance on the route I ran the previous year. Which I will not be able to do in 2015…so at the moment I am not a fan but time will tell I guess

    • RME says:

Try it, you might like it :)

    • Hurricane says:

@ Your joking, as a former runner I understand completely what you are saying. However, we have to understand that this race is about more than us and our individual performances but rather all the runners and community. Good luck and enjoy!

  4. mixitup says:

Just rotate it every year. I know the west-enders are not liking this.

    • Just like cup match, I think it would be a great idea to alternate each year. I won’t mind going east to watch the race but it would be more effective if we had every other year to watch from the west were I live.

Either way it is really not a big deal but more advantageous for the participants.

  5. HEY DIS BIE HERE says:

man it should have been along harrington sound rd then up knapkon hill all the way down to point finger then cross Johnny Barns then all the way to the finish

  6. RME says:

I didn’t like the idea at first but now that I see there is a historical context and the fact that it will be alternated year to year, I can see the point.
However, I’d rather see major changes made after consultation with runners not residents from a certain area.

  7. not a runner says:

I think this is a brilliant idea…ever heard of the Comrades Marathon?

It is the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon race. The direction of the race alternates each year between the “up” run and the “down” run. The field is capped at 18,000 runners, and entrants hail from more than 60 countries. In every event since 1988, over 10,000 runners have reached the finish.

  8. soul jah says:

Thats good.A change is as good rest. Now if we can bring back the easter parade and on bermuda day have a carnival.

  9. KarmaGotEm says:

We also need to look at starting the parade on the Square in St. George and ending at #1 Gate Field as well. This will also help to generate business in the East End. Come on Ministers from the East weigh in with your thoughts? And before all you negative people start, it is only fair to share the wealth. The West Enders have the cruise ships all summer long!

    • I heart 441 says:

Start the 24th of May parade in St. Geo and end all the way in town! Question, will you be participating in the parade or in a lawn chair sippin on something in the shade watching the parade?… you see where im going with this right.

      • Isee says:

… ending at #1 gate field. What did you read @I heart 441??

        • I heart 441 says:

You are right, I misread it. Still not a good idea though. Im all for finding ways to impact St. Geo economical as well to.

  10. RM says:

It was like that when I was a child. Every other year it was in St. Georges and we would get up and go watch the runners as they left the town of St. George. Then it changed to having it every year from the West End because they said the causeway was a problem. I think alternating it is good just like how cupmatch alternates each year.

  11. DA says:

How to they plan on managing the traffic needing to go across the causeway to the airport in the morning? #nightmare

    • Hmmm says:

      Single lane, DUH !!!!

    • M & M says:

Just like they have been managing it from the West. No brainer, everyone use caution, care and curtesy. They will be out of that area within 10 minutes I’m sure.

  12. Amen says:

This is a great idea, St Geo needs as much traffic as possible. They should also rotate the Catlin End to End/Middle to end. This would be amazing. We can all set up camps along the airport stretch to cheer on the walkers. There is also plenty parking, ferry services, vendors etc.

  13. Hmmm says:

For those who run it once, they will now run it twice. It’s a great change and a historically relevant one.

There should be no consulation with runners EVER !!! You are either up for the challenge or you are not.

Runners will have so many differing opinions on the course, on modifications, on the length and steepness of hills, on start times, on the walkers, on the relay, on elite group start, on age group starts etc etc etc. Giant bag of egos and worms open canned if you ask the runners.

  14. M & M says:

I’m loving this idea and I’m a from the West end, able to do a 2 minute walk to see the runners. Change is GREAT and it presents a new challenge for them. I solute anyone who runs this race as I am not a runner. Best of luck to you all!

  15. Somebody's momma says:

I live in the West and have no problem with this. I normally go to the finish line.

  16. My Dad was a runner says:

Thanks for the article it just jogged my memory. I remember my Dad running in a race coming from St. Georges way must have been a 24th of May. History interesting

  17. Wtf says:

Yeeeessssi I don’t have to race in the morning to go west, love that change.

  18. DJ19 says:

Love this as a runner who said four times in May 24th is enough I might just do it again to see what the other route is like. love variety. have been saying for years it should alternate. Great move. for other runners concerned about time. your 1/2 marathon time is your 1/2 marathon time regardless of route.

  19. SMH says:

Koodos for Dr.Gina Tucker and her team for making the change! Looking forward to next year.

  20. Meb says:

I hope that there will be a ferry there in the morning!

  21. jt says:

But it’s uphill from St. Georges.
