Paget Sub Post Office To Close On May 29th

April 24, 2015

The Bermuda Post Office [BPO] said that it will be closing the Paget Sub Post Office on Friday, May 29, 2015.

“There will be no redundancies as a result of this decision and the four employees who currently work at the Paget Post Office will be relocated and/or redeployed elsewhere,” the statement said.

“The post boxes will continue to be serviced until the end of their contracts, on December 31, 2015, but customers who wish to rent boxes elsewhere are welcome to do so at any of the remaining locations. Home delivery to all residents in Paget and throughout the entire island will continue.

“This decision is part of the BPO’s strategy of streamlining operations to make the department more efficient and effective.

“Over the past four years, the BPO has reduced its staffing level by 35% or 82 positions; from 232 to 150. The BPO has also cut its budget deficit from 10 million dollars in 2010 to 7 million dollars in 2015.

“The BPO is focused on revenue generation and becoming a more innovative, customer focused and sustainable postal service.

“The BPO apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause customers and Paget post box renters. We also wish to thank our staff for their hard work, dedication and support and to thank the public for supporting the BPO for over 200 years. For further information, please call the BPO at 297-7893.”

Some of the employees that remain are not focused on customer service. The rules change each time I visit, depending on who serves me.

Mrs Cannonier at GPO in Hamilton was one of the best postal workers I have ever encountered. Disappointed to learn she was relocated, but such is life.

Can say I’ve always have had a lovely experience when visiting the Crawl, Warwick and Southampton offices.

  2. Mockingjay says:

A sign of outsourcing and privatize.

    • Casual Observer says:

How did/do you feel about the outsourcing of the TCD examination facility?

Or the outsourcing of the recycling pick-up?

Or the outsourcing of numerous airport functions?

Or the privatization of St. George’s golf course?

Or the attempted sale of Ocean View golf course?

I could go on if you wish…

        Nice smackdown.
        mockingly taking lix.

        • hmmm says:

I think the PLP and the Union are taking Bermudians for a ride. Say one thing but do another…How gullable have we become to these two groups ?????????

      • jt says:

Kunta thinks he’s got it all figured out.

      • Kangoocar says:

@casual observer, trust me when I tell you that you will only hear “tree frogs ” from the mockinjay camp on that one???

    • hmmm says:

So Mockingjay, you are for privatisation, if not please comment on the below……

From 2011 Burt speech as Junior Minister:

Sen Burt went on: “It will surprise no one when I say that governments are not known to be the most efficient organisations.

“It is my hope that, as the Government looks to open up the budget process and looks to medium-term planning, that we take a serious look at what government services may be able to be provided by the private sector in a more efficient manner.

“It is my belief that, as this Government considers all of the available options, there may be room for some government services to be privatised.”

      • Mockingjay says:

Correct, he said SOME, with U.B.P/oba its ALL.

        • hmmm says:

Apparently Burt said candidates for privatisation could include public transport, postal services, waste collection, waste treatment, water and recycling.

Please can you show me where the OBA have said to privatise it all. Prove it.

        • No Longer A Member says:

Last Monday, the Vista Point at Horseshoe Bay was started at 9:30 am and completed at 6 pm…. Completed… Completed… It was done by a private company. If it was Government workers it would have taken two weeks. Sad, but privatize is the only way to go. Bye the way Mockingjay, I am no longer a member of your party due to the nonsense that happened under there watch, and I was part of not standing up and expressing the bad behavior.

    • Onion says:

…which in this case started under the PLP.

    • filobedo21 says:

And the need to reduce costs and waste. I’ve had great service at the Paget Post Office in the past. I wish the staff the very best in the future.

  3. Loquatz says:

Wow, there goes my final reason to use the bermuda mail.

  4. Trulytruly says:

Just doing what has to be done bit by bit. I never go to the post office at all. I hardly get any snail Mail apart from govt bills. Dodo comes to mind. Times really have changed. At least they are trying to adapt a little. Keep going.

  5. hmmm says:

Is that correct a budget deficit of $7million?????? I would have thought that $7m would be the total budget. A $7m deficit is shocking !

“BPO has also cut its budget deficit from 10 million dollars in 2010 to 7 million dollars in 2015.”

    • Lois Frederick says:

Been draining big money for years now. Tens of millions. At least they are losing less! Keep it up!

  6. PBanks says:

Had some pretty poor customer service experiences from that particular post office this year, so probably won’t miss that aspect of things.

  7. swing voter says:

change is good. no job loss is good. just keep trimming the fat

  8. hard at work says:

Oh how I wish I hadn’t just had 500 business cards printed with my Paget P.O. Box number on them! Thanks for the warning BPO. Wonder if we’ll have to go into Hamilton to pick up packages now. What a nightmare that will be!

    • Mockingjay says:

And when you go Hamilton to get your mail your gonna have to pay to PARK.
      See the pattern.

      • hmmm says:

COH get the parking fees, not the Govt.

      • High road says:

Yes the pattern of a responsible government trying to save us

      • Hair says:

Who pays to park now a days?????????????

      • hard at work says:

Ya that too. Sucks for businesses that are not located in Hamilton!

  9. Longtail says:

Driving to the Warwick or Devonshire PO to collect mail is not really a viable alternative for Paget residents and businesses using the present PO boxes…. hopefully the manpower costs for additional mail deliveries made necessary by this change have been taken into account!

    • Lois Frederick says:

Why is it not viable? It’s only 5 minutes to Devonshire Post office from Paget Post office.

  10. tom cooke says:

If it wasn’t for Christmas cards… I would never use the post office.. all I get are bank statements and other bills that keep the BPO going…

  11. bibbla says:

If all the sub post office are being shut, maybe they could get rid of some of the surplus 60 foot of sidewalk at the Hamilton post office, place the bikes elsewhere and start enforcing the 15 minute restriction.
I can’t even use the post office even if I wanted to as there is never any parking available.

  12. Hair says:

Aww man, I use that one all the time, it’s a great post office, and the staff is so accommodating. Will be a miss!!!

  13. Political Prisoner says:

This is what we need to focus on…

“Over the past four years, the BPO has reduced its staffing level by 35% or 82 positions; from 232 to 150. The BPO has also cut its budget deficit from 10 million dollars in 2010 to 7 million dollars in 2015.

“The BPO is focused on revenue generation and becoming a more innovative, customer focused and sustainable postal service.

Good job BPO…please continue to reduce your costs.

  14. Just thinking says:

Wouldn’t it be wise, though, to continue to service BOXES at those sub post office locations, to allow people to keep their BOX numbers? Having to change box numbers to another sub post office (which may end up being closed with little warning) is ridiculous. Come on BPO. Think outside the box. Close the service, but continue with those boxes! At this rate there won’t be enough boxes island-wide to service everyone who has them!

  15. Terry says:

And when everything is privatized you will have more Unions and splinter Unions and more *****ing and moaning about salaries and benefits et al.

Careful what you wish for. Government will save millions but where will it go.

    Shalom.

  16. Transparency says:

Sell these unused govt buildings whilst they are in condition to sell.
