BFRS Respond To Alarm Activation At BELCO

[Updated] Fire crews responded after receiving a call that the fire alarm at BELCO has been activated and it “was discovered that a faulty pull station was activated causing the extinguisher agent to dump into the switching room.”

A BFRS spokesperson said, “At 10:20am this morning Bermuda Fire Dispatch received an alarm activation at BELCO.

“Fire crews responded with five appliances and 12 firefighters.On arrival Fire crews noted smoke in a switching room but no sign of any fire.

“After investigation it was discovered that a faulty pull station was activated causing the extinguisher agent to dump into the switching room.

“All power has been restored to the switching room.”

Update 5.20pm: A BELCO spokesperson said, “Shortly after 10am this morning an alarm was activated in the East Power Plant Switching Room at Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited [BELCO].

“While the incident is currently under investigation, an initial assessment points to the activation of a fire suppression system which released fire retardant into the switching room. There was no smoke or fire present at any time. As a precaution, the power to the switch board was immediately transferred to an alternative switch board.

“As a fire alarm had been triggered, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service were automatically notified and attended the site of the alarm. There was never any threat to personnel or to power supply. The incident remains under investigation and operations continue as normal.”
