  1. Things happen so fast hope the passenger/s is alright. a life is more valuable then a vehicle.

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

Things happen so fast???? We are talking about BDA – where the supposed “speed limit” is ONLY 20 MPH!!! This was a definite case of one of the following…

      Texting?
      Speeding?
      Gross inattention?
      Under-the-influence?

They would NOT last 5 minutes on an Interstate highway in the USA!!!

  2. Rhonda Neil says:

Prayer going out that no one was seriously hurt… but damn these bermuda walls and poles that keep jumping in the road…

    • Danielle says:

You are sick. Not the time for your corny jokes.

      • Douglas Dewar says:

There is one thing that the majority of people understand, and that is humor, but some will never understand, and I feel sorry for them.
If you cannot see the the humor in life, you will die miserably.
Laughing has been scientifically proven to extend life, now I’m not saying that you laugh at situations that create hardship, or injury, but the idea of someone driving along a road with no other traffic and suddenly a pole appears from nowhere is funny.

        • Longtail says:

TCD should never have allowed Poles on the road. Bermudians only please!

          • Jus Sayin says:

That pole was in the trees and trees and that corner is wide. No way you can hit that pole unless You are drunk or lose control.

            • Justice! says:

              Jus Sayin,

Just watch when those dumbbells call for road widening to make de road more safer.

        • Justice! says:

          Douglas Dewar,

Sometimes even laughter can become no laughing matter. It has been said that too much laughter (30 minutes of it) can prove fatal–a heart attack or asphyxiation.

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

How do Bermuda drivers do it? The road is plenty wide there. Having something like a medical emergency while driving is understandable but they are rare.

I spent the day ‘drifting’ across over 350 miles of western US highway today. No crashes seen. Only 1 highway cop seen all day. No stupidity seen on the road though there were a few yapping away on their cellphones at 70mph.

How far can you drive in Bermuda without seeing some act of driving insanity?

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

@Triangle Drifter… I’d love to put half these “clowns” on a major US Interstate – like the 405 or 410 or I-10 and I-15 going through LA which both have 6 lanes of traffic in either direction!!!

I drove a *Big Truck* for a year around the States – so I have seen-it-all!!!

      • Triangle Drifter says:

I don’t know how Bermudians survive driving rental cars around the world. BTW, yes there are some very good concientious Bermudian drivers who have not had a crash in decades. There is a reason for those records.

Over 120,000 miles in the past 8 years here driving US & Canadian highways, most of them driving a vehicle 55′ long weighing over 20,000# driving everything from the East Coast mega cities to the wilds of Alaska & every state & province inbetween.

Only one accident. Weather caused. High wind, a mountain pass & a high profile vehicle are a bad mix. Getting that crash free record was not hard when 100% of ones attention is devoted to driving when on the road & not messing with cellphones.

        • MAKE MY DAY says:

I used to drive for *Trism* out of Joplin MO – moving military equipment around on a 55′ flatbed!!! Think they filed for chapter 13 recently!!

They also operated TSMT (Hazmat ops) moving ALL the dangerous stuff around the country for the US Gov’t… explosives – nuclear waste etc!!!

      • Ride says:

I’ve always found it easier driving on the open US highways then in Bermuda. The highways are fairly straight, mostly flat, gentle turns, camber in the correct direction and grade, have very good surfaces, great on and off ramps; they are a real pleasure.

Compare that to the narrow, variable lane width, undulating, sharp turns and chicanes, unintuitive camber, variable surface conditions, hidden drives and blind road entries and exits; they are very unforgiving.

There really is not comparing driving on a US highway to driving in Bermuda. Its not an apples to apples comparison.

Speed is the real killer here because of the of the roads. That’s why we all need to slow down. There is little margin for error and this is easily forgotten.

        Ride

    • coolin' says:

stop yappin bie! it dont take a lot of skill to drive in a straight line. The day we let american tourists drive is the day you’ll start seeing cars driven overboard.

      • Justice! says:

        coolin,

De day they allow tourists to drive on our roads is de day I will start walking on de water.

  5. bornb says:

Those with negative comments are heartless…. not knowing the cause of the accident and you can blurt out such nonsense. Tasteless cruel disgusting…. count your blessings because you never know if you or your loved one will be in this predicament!!!! Cant beleive you guys.gals !!!

  6. Family Man says:

    Greaseballs on the road?

  7. P says:

Oh please,we have some really piss poor drivers here!!! No one indicates..people pull out right in front of you expecting you to slow down for them..halt the flow of traffic because they need to talk to their “bredrens”…piss poor…put all these drivers here in a real car and put em on the auto bahn or a highway..half of them wouldn’t make it back alive..

    • Lone Wolf says:

I have to agree with P. I don’t know the circumstances of this particular accident. For all we know, a cat could have ran out in front of the driver, startling them and causing them to instinctively swerve to avoid it and resulting with the collision with the pole. It happens!

However, in general, Bermuda has the worst driving I have ever seen in my life. Anywhere. In addition to the habits P outlined, we also have people ignoring the ‘right of way’ when a vehicle is stopped in the road for whatever reasons. It seems that here, the vehicles in the blocked lane have the right of way and the people in the clear lane have to stop to let them through.

It also seems people here really want to switch over to driving on the right hand side of the road like they do in America. I can’t remember the last time I saw a vehicle coming towards me in the opposite direction that was in their OWN lane. And that is on the straight roads. I go around every corner expecting to see some fool on a bike overtaking or just simply in my lane for no reason at all. Cars too.

And then you have the Taxis that are bipolar. They are either driving a 2 kph in front of you or they are right on your rear bumper trying to drive at 102 kph. Or they are stopping or making U turns anywhere they please.

I could go on and on but nobody really cares.

      • Justice! says:

        Lone Wolf,

Let’s not forget to mention those persons who pull over anywhere and at anytime the second their cellphones ring.

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

I’d like to see them on a major US H/Way (Interstate) dealing with ALL the 18 “wheeler’s” (Big trucks) as we call them over here – doing 80 MPH!!

      • Straight up says:

OMG! Driving in the States is fricking easy. Big wide roads, signs everywhere to show you where to go, groves on the side of the right lane to alert you if you swerve to far off road, and even the smaller roads have pullover or stand by lanes. I’ve been driving on the US roads every year for over 2 decades. Travelling down I-95 on cruise control is a breeze. All one has to do is signal to change lanes. Try that in BDA with our tight, winding, big pot hole roads. Car mirrors are only inches apart as the vehicle pass. Sitting on the passenger side, one can pick cherries and draw on walls. Despite the accidents, Bermudians in general know how to drive.

        • MAKE MY DAY says:

Easy HUH??? Car crashes KILL between 35,000 – 40,000 people every year in the States!!! Want to re-think your comment???

          • Straight up says:

Perhaps you should re-think!! No one is disputing the high number of accidents that occur in the US, Bda and everywhere else. My response was to your initial comment where you make it seem as though locals would not be able to handle driving down a US highway at 80 mph. All I’m saying is that I find maneuvering on Bda’s little messed up roads far more difficult.

        • Triangle Drifter says:

Easy huh? Can see that you have not spent much time in the lefthand seat, have not been on county roads which are barely wider than Bermudas, with no shoulder, tarmac then ditch on the side & the speed is 60mph. I guess you have never experienced a 5 mile downgrade & fading brakes, never dealt with ice, never dealt with wind across the open plains, never had rain so hard that wipers cannot keep up & there is noplace to get off the road, never had wipers freeze & become useless with chunks of ice in them, never had a tire blowout at 60, never hit a diesel spill at 60.

Yeah, driving is real tough in Bermuda. The only real hazards are other drivers.

      • drivadontstopatall says:

Make my day you have repeated yourself bout highways like 4 times…shut up…driving stateside is easy pickings…I’m 27 and I’ve drove from Alabama to Miami with no incident so stop putting all Bermudians in the same damn category…I promise you I can drive better then you in Bermuda and in America.

    • Justice! says:

      P

Don’t forget those who overtake a long line of vehicles at high speed on blind corners when the roads are wet. I look for them on the stretch.

  8. Jo Blo says:

  11. Road Runner says:

Lucky he missed the red Round De Island Seagull Race boat, race is next month.

  12. MAKE MY DAY says:

They must have been flying around that corner to knock a BELCO pole down like that – and the car almost in the water – down on the beach!!

They are “lucky” the electric wires did not land on the car and ignite it!! Electricity and gasoline do NOT mix very well!!

    Texting?
    Speeding?
    Gross inattention?
    Under-the-influence?

Take your pick… I guarantee it will be one-of-the-above!!!

  13. Truth is killin' me... says:

Too many enablers on the island feeling sorry for the ones breaking the law! You all should be feeling sorry for the hard working people of Sandy’s that had to wait till 5am in the morning to get power restored. Some of them who were seniors that had to sit in the dark all night!!

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

Well Stated – as there are a lot of Low Information people posting on these “blogs”!!!

  14. Worried in Sandys... says:

    Just missed my seagull! phew…

  15. HEY DIS BIE HERE says:

The female driver “The female driver apparently sustained relatively minor injuries……….and this explains it all..lol females cannot drive in Bermuda

    • Triangle Drifter says:

You had better hope no female knows who you are. None for you for a long time. You need to learn when to keep your fingers still.

  16. Joonya says:

S***! Its a good thing that was not during the day, where people may have been sunning on those 2 beach loungers! They woulda been F*&^ed!!

  17. Tracey0073 says:

I am only a visitor to Bermuda and have been for the last 12 years…but what I have seen compared to the UK is the lack of public transport for a night out. I have friends there that I stay with …and have to say I have never seen so much drink driving…in the UK most of us are too scared to drink and drive, but in Bermuda it seems to be normal.

  18. Mr Happy says:

It is amazing to see so many defending this person.

The only reasons this can legitimately happen are:
    1) Medical emergency, or
    2) A person suddenly appearing in the road, or
    3) An oncoming car suddenly veering into their lane and leaving after they’ve caused the accident

If the above did not occur, it is the result of the driver doing something illegal. Simple as that.

Hopefully it’s a wake-up call for this person, and they straighten up & fly right from now on.
