Construction of the Acute Care Wing was financed partly via the Bermuda Hospitals Board’s “Why It Matters” campaign, which sought donations from businesses and members of the public in order to see the project brought to life, with over $31 million raised so far.

So that’s what a 290 million dollar wing on a hospital looks like!

    • RME says:

To be fair. You must consider that the price is not just for the brick and mortar or furniture. All of that equipment is NOT cheap!

      • non political says:

Fair? If the past administration was in place, fairness would not be an option. Wonderful job to the pass administration. Giving credit where it is due!

    • Keith says:

In Canada this would be 350 million easy….

  2. DB says:

Very nice, too bad they going to have a stressed out and low morale staff working there. We are tired of or jobs being threaten and the more for least non-sense. BHB has no money we are told this a few times a month.

  3. Bermy Guy says:

    290 million r u sure????

  4. Mumbojumbo says:

I’m just going to come out and say it,,,,have you lot devised a system or uv light sanitation yet?….A SIMPLE LIGHT SWITCH YOU TURN ON FOR A FEW MINUTES A DAY IN STERIL ENVIROENTS AFTER REGULAR CLEANING AND STERILISATION ,run your air conditioned air through the loght as well,(where you might need to). Also when and if you treat mersa, you should utilise pure oxygen, iron lung increased atmospheres to slow progress…..oh yes….uv light for the bacteria……got that?….good….now go do something useful….put these things in place!

    • Time Shall Tell says:

You wait until the construction is complete to bring forward your brain storm?

    And befor surgery!

  6. Cost over $430M. Then rent paid to builder $2.5M/month for 30 years ($900M) Plus running costs. Simply put this single public/private PLP development is going to turn Bermuda into a 3 3rd World country because we no longer have young healthy tax base to support the massive costs to run this monstrosity. OBA should have shut this project down they day after they were elected and quickly put out an RFP like they did for Grand Atlantic….

photo ops are always good to detract from the real problems which should be highlighted when given an update, there should be split screens of before and after to explain exactly what was”fixed” to justify hundreds of millions of dollars in changes.. Problems still exist with lack of surgeons, specialist, and CARE most of all including lowering the number of persons being flown away..

  8. Quinton Berkley Butterfield says:

Even though this went over budget (as most projects do), today I feel proud to be Bermudian, and to be in a country that puts time and effort to improve the standards for its people. I hope that the healthcare provided in this new facility helps our country(wo)men enjoy wonderful, healthy and fulfilling lives and meets our needs when we are sick. Bravo Bermuda, we should all be proud!! :)

I think it stunning!! it looks great!! :)

  10. Bermuda Hospitals Board Public Relations says:

The design and construction related cost of the new Acute Care Wing ($247 million) was announced in February 2011 and formed part of the calculation of Bermuda Hospitals Board’s monthly payments to Paget Health Services. These monthly payment amounts have not changed. Much like when you buy a house, all the money is not paid in one lump sum. The first payment – $40million, was made at the substantial completion of the building in June 2014. This was in accordance with the contract between Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) and Paget Health Services. BHB will make the subsequent monthly payments to Paget Health Services, in accordance with the contract, over the next thirty years much like a homeowner would pay a mortgage. However it is important to note that a distinct advantage of the contract is that the payments include maintenance of the facility – a feature not found in mortgage agreements.

Stop complaining and make a difference. If your job is being threatened do something about it. You have two well paid unions associated with the hospital. Do you even work at the hospital? What’s amazing to me is that a lot of staff complain, but in reality you get at least 4 weeks paid sick leave (which many abuse), you have not had to take a pay cut (yet), you have not had to take furlough days, you get two paid coffee breaks,125 days of maternity leave, paid vacation, health insurance , a pension plan etc….. Stop complaining and arrive to work on time, ensure that patients get their meals and pain medications on time, ask your patients how they are feeling and act like you care when they answer, direct your patients to resources that can assist them with getting better…be patient focused, show them why they matter. I actually work at the hospital and I recognized that some of us actually care for our patients, but we can do much better when we work as a team and have the same patient focused outcome. Learn your organizations vision and apply it!!! Use your SET (customer service training). Be there for the right reason and not show up just for a paycheck. If you are not happy, make a difference or leave.
