Lunch Wagon Moves Due To America’s Cup

October 14, 2015

A food truck normally stationed on Albuoy’s Point in Hamilton was apparently told to move due to the upcoming America’s Cup event, prompting much discussion across social media.

The initial update from the company said, “Please be advised Cann Da Licious has been advised by CoH that we are unable to open this week due to the Americas Cup. We apologize and look forward to seeing you when we re-open.”

The status update from the company prompted a number of replies, including one from the Corporation of Hamilton [CoH] which responded saying: “Hi all, we appreciate your concern for Cann Da Licious and want to share with you how it all works.

“The America’s Cup Event Authority has leased all of Front Street, including Albouy’s Point where Cann Da Licious operates from, for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series this week.

“The ACBDA made a public call for all local vendors and concession stands to apply for space inside the Americas Cup Village – any business was eligible to apply. The selection process was not done by the City but we are happy that so many Bermudian businesses have been selected to participate.”

Cann Da Licious then responded on the same thread, saying, “Thank you for all of the support. Many of your concerns were raised by us. We were extended an olive branch by CoH for reparations. All of your comments have been encouraging to say the least. Bermuda we must continue to support our fellow Bermudians in whatever sector. Change must start with us.”

When asked by Bernews for  comment, the City of Hamilton said, “The City of Hamilton sympathises with Vernal Cann, owner of Cann Da Licious and has been direct communication with him. Initially, Mr. Cann was asked to move from Albuoy’s Point for the three days of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series event.

“He understood this was a condition of his lease. However, it became necessary to close off Albuoy’s Point earlier, thus asking him to move for the week rather than three days. As of today, the City has secured Cann-da-licious a temporary vendor location in Wesley Square Park.

“This temporary lease is valid until Wednesday October 21, 2015 or upon the availability of his original location in Albuoy’s Point. We will be sure to share this information on our social media and other channels to help ensure the public is aware of his temporary location change.”

  1. Strike fund says:

The least that CoH could have done was remind existing vendors of the conditions of the lease before licenses solely for the AC had to be applied for.

If they did do this then vendors affected can have little complaints or consciously chose not to be a part of it.

The extra four days is not acceptable, however. There is undoubtedly extra footfall in that spot this week and I doubt the makeshift new spot will be as profitable.

    • 32n64 says:

Why? If you’re party to an agreement or have legal commitments (rent, payroll tax, social insurance, salaries) why is it necessary to remind people of their obligations?

      • Lisa Talbot says:

it was not a reminder at all it was oh by the way we told u 3 days but now its 7. that is the problem

  2. Vulcan Trash Cleaner says:

The America’s Cup Event Authority should cough up towards this Vendor’s business loss!

    • mosquitos of the sea says:

Why is that? There was a very public notification period for vendors to register. If they didn’t do this then that is too bad.

    • Toleratate says:

      Go lay down….. Really????

    • Food Bank says:

While it is unfortunate that she cant operate in her normal location, ITS A TRUCK, ON WHEELS, Roll it somewhere else and open there. The same social media that was used to let the customers know that they were closed could have been told to say “We are temporarily moving” !

    • Ian says:

what the COH doesn’t mention is that participation in the AC village comes with a $600 price tag!

      • Me, Me, Me, I,I, I says:

So, everything comes with a price. Is it free to hold a booth at Cupmatch!

        • Ian says:

Why should someone already on a full time lease have to pay that to continue being in the area they’ve already paid for? Get over yourself with that “they’re all a bunch of self-centered, entitled idiots…” mentality

          • mf87 says:

Why Ian, when they are acting like a bunch of self-centred entitled idiots

        • Pete says:

No You have to Pay, for a stall, pay to get thru the gate to watch the game, crown and anchor. what`s the whining all about , you gladly pay there!

  3. watching says:

Perhaps a food truck doesn’t fit the aesthetics that the America’s cup is trying to portray of dear old Bermuda.

This government, this corporation, and this America’s cup mentality, is really bothersome.

    • Blel says:

Can’t you read? The truck didn’t apply for a license.

I just walked by the ferry terminal and guess what…Smokin’ Barrel is still there! I guess they applied for a license.

      • Onion Juice says:

Hey Dipstick, the initial time was 3 days which they agreed too then it was discovered that they had to close down Albuoy’s Point earlier then the INITIAL date that they agreed too and LONGER.
So he already has a lease to operate there since summer and now you want him to RE-APPLY and pay the $600 fee !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So much for our $77 million, this is worst then getting on the Base when they were here, all you needed was to be with someone who worked on the Base.

        • Me, Me, Me, I,I, I says:

Read the lease Ian. I trust it says that on a rare occasion they may be asked to move. The only thing I will say is that they be given a prorated discount for the day or two that they are normally open.

        • Me, Me, Me, I,I, I says:

Your poor thing Onion Juice. What did you already spend your cut of the $800 million? Need more? Try working instead of whining.

      • Ian says:

Actually smokin barrel was asked to move as well by tomorrow. I had quite an interesting chat w one of their staff about how the COH handled their situation. Sad because it’s these guys livelihoods, they fit quite well into the scene and you’re making them step aside for the billionaire boys clubs’ lil party

        • Me, Me, Me, I,I, I says:

Its a mobile wagon Ian! If the message that they are closed was able to get out there. Certainly they can send a message to say. We will be temporarily located at ________. Do they even open on Saturdays and Sundays?

I live in Somerset and know that once every two years I will be inconvenienced at Cupmatch. Im also inconvenienced at May 24th and you know what I F’N live with it. Do I go to the game. …sometimes for an hour or two? However, I know that I (like my neighbours) have to give a little and plan accordingly because it is for the betterment of the country as a whole.

Give a little and stop TAKING.

          • Ian says:

Does that change the fact the COH should have given him ample notice considering in the absence of that he has no reason to expect he would have to move?

          • islandgal says:

So at Cup Match & May 24th you move out of your house? I think not.

          • Old Buck says:

How are you inconvenienced at Cupmatch? Are you asked to move?

    • mosquitos of the sea says:

You sir are a troll. The AC has been very accommodating.

      • Ian says:

This stuff is not the ACs fault. It’s the COHs poor management of their FULLTIME leaseholders Interests

    • Diablo says:

Perhaps he failed to apply for a license.

Why is smokin barrel still in place of your conspiracy theory was true?

59 local vendors were able to secure licenses from the AECA for the three days. Anything to say bout them?

Why do some think that opportunities should simply be given and not earned?

My wife attended an AECA town hall on Somerset earlier in the summer to get a better understanding on what opportunities were available. She learned about it via the news

After the session she applied for a license and provided the AECA with her business and product plan.

No less than 1 week later she was contacted to advise her that her application had been accepted. She now has a vendor license for the 3 days.

She doesn’t know anyone on the AECA before you make your usual assinine assumptions. She simply took the initiiative on her own, works hard and her reward was the opportunity she was offered.

If she sat around and complained how this event would bring no benefit to her then she would have had nothing to complain about. Life is about working for your own and not expecting someone to drop success into your lap.

      • Ian says:

Smokin barrel has to move by tomorrow… Learned that from the horses mouth today. Well one if their staff anyway…

      • islandgal says:

I know of people that tried to fit into this Ac’s event as vendors. DENIED, DENIED & DENIED.

    • Toleratate says:

All I can say is “WOW”…
      SMH

    • CUP YES says:

what a daft comment, your attitude and mentality is the bother.

    • No laughing matter says:

You all know very well that AC is not going to have no beat up, tired looking food trucks on-site selling steakums all night. Let’s be real and creative folks, come on now…

      • Discern says:

High and Mighty! Some of them had to start out small even if their businesses were tired looking and beaten up. That is why they are established now! Some of the best foods come out of these businesses. Don’t judge a book by its cover, and don’t knock the small man! Cann-da-licious you will have your turn! Remain humble and allow God to take you to the top!

      • islandgal says:

Like the hotel worker who said years ago,”We want no hamburger & hot dog people.” Yeah right!! Americas Cup is about all of us.

  4. Just a matter of time says:

It would be interesting to know:

    1) If there was ample communication given to Cann Da Licious as an existing paying leaseholder to the CoH prior to the ACBDA taking it over as a heads up courtesy to move or apply for a lease spot during the events.

    2) How was this ‘public call’ for all vendors and concession stands to apply for space done? Was it say a one time ad in the newspaper which many do not read from start to finish on a daily (like me)? This could easily be missed if that was the case. (Hence my comment in point #1)

    3) What was the ‘selection process’ conducted by the ACBDA (and not the CoH)?

As a popular vendor, it’s hard to believe that Cann Da Licious would not have been interested in providing their services during this particular event. Now they are offered another location that may not be so prime. There are definitely some gaps in this story.

    • mosquitos of the sea says:

There was plenty of notice for vendor enrollment. The room was packed with business people from all sectors.

      • Ian says:

that doesn’t necessarily translate to plenty of notice given to the full time leaseholders who should not have to anticipate being kicked off of property they are leasing FULL TIME

        • Me, Me, Me, I,I, I says:

They are portable / mobile lunch wagons. How much of a problem is it to move temporarily?

          • Ian says:

Between the sarcasm in your alias and what it implies of which segment of the community you represent, I don’t expect you to feel any differently.

          • Lisa Talbot says:

there is the problem of not enough spots in the city to manage the wattage for electricity that food trucks require.

        • jt says:

They should if it is a condition of their lease.
O.J. has been barking about this forever. One would expect that the owners have known longer than him. Plenty of time to apply as an AC vendor or decide on your relocation strategy.

    • Legalgal says:

      I think you forgot 4)

      4) whether the ACBDA and/or visited the vendor to wipe his bum and spoon feed him.

      Really?

Sadly he failed to act. Finished.

  5. aceboy says:

The COH did not say they couldn’t open…that is an erroneous statement. They asked that the food truck be MOVED. Not closed. Closing would be the decision of the owner.

    • Onion Juice says:

Funny thing is the City don’t have no say along Front Street for a week.

    • Ian says:

Yeah great show of support to the bermudian business owners that are there year round. “You pay for this space but Get the hell out of here until these other guys are done… Btw they’ll let you in their party for 600 bucks”. Poor management by COH. Not ACBDAs fault

      • jt says:

What are you suggesting the CoH should have done?
Why not apply for the AC licence and look to profit from the additional traffic? Plenty of others have.

        • Ian says:

Uhh let’s see… Let the guy run his frickin business considering there are no food concessions set up at albuoys perhaps during the event…. Or how about better communication of the fact he would have to move on the basis he has no natural reason to suspect he would have to otherwise. Or how about providing a alternative location off the bat as part of the request to move instead of acting decent simply as a result of mounting public pressures. Starting to makes sense to you yet???

          • jt says:

It’s a condition in the lease. Shouldn’t he know that? I bet he did. Is the provision of an alternate location a condition of the lease?
Read the post regarding requirements for AC food vendors. Perhaps he didn’t want to comply? But I speculate, just like you do regarding food vendor locations. It may also be that they have plans for Albouys that don’t include food vendors.

  6. Clarke l Jones says:

Maybe they will make more money at Wesley Square Park for the next 8-10 days.
Life is full of sweet and sour grapes.

  7. Terry says:

How long has this food truck been there.

  8. Izzypop says:

The call had been put out for quite a while to apply to be a part of Americas cup. All they had to do was apply as everyone else seems to have done. It’s easier to make a fuss then do want was required. But I am glad they have another spot to work out of .

    • Onion Juice says:

Hey Dipstick, they already established an initial 3 day closure which they agreed to, then they flipped the script and told them that they have to close earlier then they agreed and closed much longer.

    • Ian says:

In the absence of ample notice, Why would a person who is already there by leasehold expect to have to be amongst those looking to get access

      • jt says:

What does the lease say about notice times? You don’t know so don’t speculate on what is ample.

      • mf87 says:

because THE LAW. And also THE LEASE.

  9. Serious says:

Well then, I don’t normally post comments but I can’t believe people sit here and actually complain about this sorta thing, they had the chance to apply for a space and understood the terms abiding to their lease. The extra few days might prove as an inconvience but that goes back to applying for the space which I’m sure they were aware of. They’ve also gotten another spot for the time being for all of you loyal customers who love to get food from there! So tell me again, why are you complaining???

    • Onion Juice says:

Now I have an idea how the Tuckers Town Land Grab took place.

      • Good Smoke says:

your are a pure pathological dreamer of the greater universe oh so informed and deluded one.

      • mf87 says:

You, Sir, are a racist. This race is “white” according to you, this whole event is for “white”, you are the one sitting on the fence complaining instead of improving your ownlife.

good luck buddy, you’ll need it!

    • Ian says:

In the absence of proper communications from COH, Why would they think to apply for space when they already lease it.

  10. blazer says:

why should they have to apply? are they not there anyway? im lost

    • Ian says:

Ding ding ding ding!!!! We have a thinker folks!

    • jt says:

It’s a condition of their lease that they can be asked to move temporarily. The question seems to be how much notice they received. It would be interesting to know the time frames and if there is something in the lease pertaining to a notice period. They signed the lease, they should know. If actions were taken counter to the lease arrangement they (and O.J.) have a valid case.
Still can’t figure out why they wouldn’t have applied for the AC license.

  11. Coffee says:

Can Da Licious should have benefitted fully by the largess of the AC without the indignation of being asked to apply , reapply or relocated … Period ! I’m sure that city taxes do come with the business lease , as does a tax structure come with any restaurant or food merchant in the direct AC ‘village.’

This situation kind of sums up why this event may , in all honesty , get a lukewarm reception from the locals who will not in any tangible way benefit from this Alladins Chest of baubles and charms .

  12. Ed Case says:

Most of Bermuda had never heard about this lunch wagon until now. This incident is far from bad for them but rather the best piece of advertising ever. So stop moaning people. Can delicious benefits from AC after all. Will Famous ever be able to live this down?

    • Onion Juice says:

Hey Dipstick, you may have a point but it’s the principle of the matter. So we are at the point where we just open up without dignity for the dollar.

      • Ed Case says:

dipstick that’s funny. Get on with your homework to school tomorrow. One day you might get to high school

  13. Why says:

It’s funny how so many people seem upset, but yet Mr. Cann sounds very calm about this situation. He still got a license to do business elsewhere and that was very accommodating of the CoH.

    • Onion Juice says:

Well when you have to depend on CoH for prime space, that’s the wise thing to do, but CoH have NO SAY along Front Street for a week.

    • Sickofantz says:

I agree with you Why. The Cann Poeple seem perfectly happy with this. I bet they have known ever since they started their business at albuoys in the summer that they would have to move. Some people (the always angry onions just love making a fuss about nothing).

  14. Enough People Enough says:

Does this island moan about everything. For goodness sakes, the owner of Cann Da Licious is not complaining as much as you all. Enough people Enough.

  15. NT says:

Disgusting. They get to break any and all rules for this rich mans event. Sickening.

    • Max Head Room says:

Something stinks here! Oh wait it’s only Onion Juice.

      As you were.

      • Onion Juice says:

You called? Since you did, lets all remember that at least $100 million has to be generated(including the BTA gift club) before we start seeing ANY form of profit celebrating.

        • Sickofantz says:

I agree with you Why. The Cann Poeple seem perfectly happy with this. I bet they have known ever since they started their business at albuoys in the summer that they would have to move. Some people (the always angry onions just love making a fuss about nothing).

        • NT says:

Me? What are you trying to say Max? Anyway, ask San Francisco how much they made off of this…go ahead. Billionaires coming here to play with their toys while making US move out their way. Seriously think about how absurd it is to kick a food truck (the little man hustling) off the street so you and your billionaire buddies can have the land for yourself to do whatever it is they’ll be doing. This actually sounds quite familiar to me. Same old thing just a different year and era!

How much are they going to be donating to local schools? Charities? People here are poor and looking for jobs but we’re supposed to be excited because some billionaires are here for a couple years to race their boats? And if we’re lucky we can serve them some delicious meals at restaurants and be grateful to make $500 a week doing it! Maybe we can take some pictures with their new BWM hybrids they get to drive while it’s banned for us! Sounds fun.

          • Spit Bouy says:

            Entitlement Alert!!!

@ NT, How much do you give to local schools and charities? How much time do you donate; don’t bother we can guess the amount!

So who do you want to come here and spend money and provide employment; let me guess, poor homeless people right? LMAO

        • jt says:

          Lie.

    • mf87 says:

Unbelievable. let me guess, its the OBAs fault?

  16. Know thethe Facts says:

@mosquitos of the sea…..they didn’t want to apply because they already PAY for a spot there….they were simply asking to be relocated…know the facts!!! Always someone who THINKS they know who speak/write the loudest!

  17. No Longer A Member says:

I am curtain he knew. There were at least 200 people at the food vendors meeting which was on a Thursday at the Church of God on Dundonald Street. If we know the personality, then we would know the complaint. Typical nonsense. Same with this Marine and Ports situation???? Couldn’t this meeting wait until Monday after the America’s Cup? The President of the BIU would be seen as a better man, but unfortunately, negative, negative, negative. I am certain this would not be going on if their beloved hate party was in power. Sad people, you are only doing this to yourselves as all will suffer when people with money just say it is enough.

    • Onion Juice says:

So how many were picked out of the 200, how were they picked and who picked them?

      • Ed Case says:

What difference does it make? In your small mind do you think everyone gets every job they apply for. Your momma tell you that? Hahaha

      • No Longer A Member says:

The last time I saw the sheet, there were 26 food vendors. We were not picked we just had to meet the standards and pay the fee. The industry standards have been raised due to the professionalism required and this being a world event seen everywhere. So we were told high standards will have to met. So some decided to move forward and some chose not to. their choice. the person that ran this was Mr. Chris Garland, the head of the Chamber of Commerce’s restaurant division representing the America’s Cup. When you attend you will notice several changes from just doing it at Cup Match or Harbor Nights, hygiene will be regulated, food temperatures will be regulated, barriers between the propane tanks and stalls must have a fire wall separating incase of gas leaks, must be inspected and signed off by the authority. All debris has to have its correct compartments and removed correctly. Replenishing stocks only at certain times. The list was huge but doable if your professional and love your trade. There will be various cuisines as well representing a cross section of the islands people. You will enjoy, I can see this being a great event, a taste of what is to come. So lets be positive and do all we can to showcase Bermuda, our Island home… XOXO

  18. Navin Johnson says:

I work right around the corner from Albouys Point and have never seen this truck…Smoking Barrel has been there for a few years….. And s the truck open on Saturday and Sunday? So what is the real economic loss …they get free publicity when they move back..

  19. Coffee says:

Unfortunately the ACBDC doesn’t know , or is incapable of showing goodwill to the small and established entrepreneur .

    • Ian says:

it’s not a fault of the ACBDAs

      • Tolerate says:

You’ll have to talk louder Ian (I think this is like the fourth time you said it).
You see, people like OJ and Coffee will milk this to the end and IGNORE facts in an effort to demonize and bring ACBDA into a bad light because we ALL know who looks good if Bermuda pulls this off.
        And they can’t allow that…..
        SMH

        • Ian says:

I’m not making this a political issue. But on that note I feel it will take a bit more than Americas cup to get the masses feeling more optimistic about the islands future.

      • Onion Juice says:

Oh really, its like SAGE making decisions and recommendations for the Government. Try again.

    • i guess that would be you and the crying onion. big time business tycoons?

    • jt says:

      Proof.

  20. my view says:

I did not know about this lunch wagon. Now I do and lots of others, so guess what happens when they reopen in that location .lots of new business. They will be the winners in the end albeit they may not feel that way right now. That said, some one ,not sure who should compensate them for lost of business if there is a proven lost.

    • Coffee says:

But for now he’ll have to settle for , and poach the customers that usually support Degraff’s lunch wagon . SMDH !

    • Onion Juice says:

They have the best juiciest burgers around.

  21. Widget says:

This is a photo opt for the world to see. Don’t you think we look better under a tent then in a lunch wagon.

  22. Wow says:

OMG! From what I understand here, COH told him to move not close. So, why is everyone going ballistic about this??

  23. james says:

lets see who really goes to the bank monday

  24. bluebird says:

Nobody owes YOU anything and nobody is going to give you anything.
soon you will have to learn to “WORK” for what you get.

  25. bermy onion says:

I think he’s been placed in a better spot! If anything he’s gotten free publicity & I & my husband never knew there was a lunch wagon at Albuoy’s Point until now . . . Rarely go around there since the bank moved!

  26. stunned... says:

having read some of these posts, i sure hope that no-one from the AC35 committee is reading and noting that Bermudians have no trouble in biting the hands that feed them…ungrateful lot.

    • Spit Bouy says:

      @ Stunned,

Don’t forget Hate Radio and other talk shows, entitled pathetic whiners.

However I bet they AC folks have heard similar in other destinations, though the massive entitlement attitude of too many here no doubt will have them shaking their heads. I say leave the moaners and whiners to shout at the sky and get on with things with the Bermudians, residents and visitors who are happy to participate and enjoy. I will.
