Man Tells Court He Is “Too Old” To Go To Jail

October 19, 2015

Appearing in Magistrates Court  a 62-year-old man pleaded guilty to stealing a handmade leather shoulder bag valued at $24.99 from the Fair Trade Shop in Dockyard’s Clocktower Mall, with the Court hearing he gave the bag to his girlfriend.

The Crown Prosecutor told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that on June 9th of this year shop staff had seen Randy Thompson outside the Mall with the bag which still had a price tag attached.

On checking CCTV, they identified Mr Thompson and noted that Mr Thompson had removed the bag from the display and left without paying.

Police were contacted, and Mr Thompson was located, arrested, and questioned.

On questioning, Mr Thompson admitted, to police, that he had stolen the bag and then given it to his girlfriend.

Asked to explain his actions, Mr Thompson told the Magistrate that: “I apologize. Stealing is stealing.”

Referring to his past record, which extended back decades but which also showed no convictions for the past few years, Mr Thompson responded to the Magistrate’s suggestion of a jail sentence that he was “too old” to do prison now.

Mr Thompson counter suggested that, instead, he should get a “stern reprimand”.

After ascertaining that Mr Thompson might have access to funds provided by working, the Magistrate ordered that he make restitution of $24.99 through the Court and that he also pay a fine of $200.
