A spokesperson said, “It would be remiss of the Bermuda Public Services Union not to officially recognise the immeasurable contribution that Sister LaVerne Furbert has made to Bermuda’s labour movement.

“She leaves behind an extensive and impactful legacy for us to honour and celebrate.

“As an active stalwart for trade unionism, Sis. Furbert was always on the frontline advocating for workers’ rights and labour. Many would know, however, that her contributions extended far beyond the walls of the Bermuda Industrial Union

“As a Senator for the Progressive Labour Party, Sis. Furbert demonstrated her leadership skills and her deep and unwavering commitment to progressing Bermuda.

“She also wrote extensively for “The Workers Voice” about not only on the many exploits of the BIU but also on activities and contributions to the labour movement by other Unions. The BPSU also acknowledges Sis. Furbert’s extensive work on advancing women’s rights in Bermuda and her hosting of the BIU’s Annual International Women’s Day Tea.

“Sis. Furbert held a special place in her heart for Bermuda’s youth and had a passion for ensuring the development of Bermuda’s future leaders. She provided unending support and encouragement for the young trade unionist across the Bermuda Trade Union Congress and had a major impact and influence on a number of BPSU’s Officers, both past and present.

“Devoted mother and grandmother, staunch labour advocate, tireless protector of the disadvantaged and true champion of Bermuda’s youth; Sis. Furbert will be deeply and forever missed by all those who knew her.

“The Executive, General Council and Secretariat of the BPSU extends their deepest condolences to her family and loved ones; with her passing, Bermuda has lost one of its true matriarchs.

“Go in peace, Sis. LaVerne Furbert, your work here is done.”
