May 28, 2012

18-year-old Berkeley Institute student Trae Trott walked away with a $5,000 education award after winning last night’s [May 27] Alpha Beautillion held at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium.

Hosted by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the event saw five accomplished young men competing for a chance to boost their education funds. Each entrant wins money to put towards their further education, with $5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second, $2,000 for third and $1,000 for fourth and fifth place.

Winner Trae Trott:

The young men competed in four categories including introduction, oratorical, talent and Q&A. The other entrants were 16-year-old Aaron Phillips from Warwick Academy, 18-year-old Khaivon Castro from CedarBridge Academy, 16-year-old Torrae Wainwright from Saltus Grammar School, and 18-year-old Zachary Nzabalinda from Bermuda Institute.

All the young men take part in a six month program, with activities this year including weekly volunteer work at Matilda Smith Rest Home, Youth Library and Dellwood Math Attack Program. In addition, all five young men are flown to the Fraternity’s Leadership Development Conference in New York.

Senator Rabain and winner Trae Trott below:

Senator Diallo Rabain said the program has been taking place for eleven years and is “near and dear” to the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, while winner Trae Trott thanked God and his family for his success.

Alpha Phi Alpha is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for Black University students and was founded in 1906 at Cornell University in New York, with the local chapter being founded in Bermuda in 1950.
