Saltus Launch Investigation Into Former Teacher

March 23, 2018

Saltus Grammar School said they were recently “made aware of allegations of inappropriate behaviour by a male teacher employed by the school in the 1970s,” and has “launched a formal investigation into the matter. ”

“The allegations included touching students in a sexual manner and exhibiting what we now understand to be grooming behavior. The school has not found anything on record in terms of complaints about the teacher at the time, but is continuing to investigate. The teacher left Saltus and Bermuda many decades ago,” the school said.

“In light of these allegations, Saltus has engaged the services of T&M Protection Resources, a US-based firm with expertise in this area, and has launched a formal investigation into the matter. The appropriate Bermuda authorities have been informed and will continue to work with the school throughout this process.”

According to school Head, Deryn Lavell, “While it is difficult to respond to allegations from so long ago, we have no reason to doubt these individuals and it is our intention to open our doors to this conversation.

“Society is transforming and there is growing awareness that abuse, no matter when it occurred, should not remain in the shadows. We are grateful to those who came forward and we have invited anyone with information that may be helpful to the investigation, to contact T&M in confidence.

“In order to protect the privacy of those involved, and as we are at the beginning of our investigation, there are no further details that can be shared at this time. However, we intend to communicate the results of the investigation as soon as they are available.”
