I didn’t think there were ATVs on the island – or do the police mean an SUV?

    • 1minute says:

There was one marked SOLD outside Gorhams… It was also mark, not street legal.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Good question. What is an ATV doing on the road? Why would anyone import one?

Actually the side by side type of ATV, equipped with street tires, would be a good vehicle for Bermudas roads. They are about the size, some smaller than, an A class vehicle & most have a top speed of only 30mph or so.

    • Whad up says:

I saw a blue one on sale outside Gorhams a few weeks ago. I noticed it had smoother street type tires on it as oppossed to the nobby tires you normally see on ATVs and Motocross bikes. I thought to myself, where would someone ride an ATV in Bermuda with street type tires? Now I know. I hope these two young men recover quickly.

  2. Coli says:

My prayers to the young man’s family.

  3. Sigh says:

It was the ATV outside Gorhams. It had street tyres on it and from what I remember the sign said it was a 250cc

  4. james S says:

Unlicenced and uninsured as they are not allowed on the road. the MIF takes another hit. Should not have been on the road.

    • observer says:

Please! Some of the people already driving cars, trucks/vans & SUV’s shouldn’t be on the road when they get in their flip mode and let’s not mention most people already riding bikes…

  5. STAiNED_PARADiSE says:

hmmm….wonder if it was the one that was on sale at gorhams….ive seen a green one sitting outside there for sale for sometime now….

  6. Honesty says:

ATV’s are on island! One was in Bermuda Day Parade a few years ago! However, not meant to be on road.

    • What Next says:

The one that you saw in the Bermuda Parade only run’s at our South Side Race Track not on any BDA roads…… The one that has been seen outside of Gorhams is only one of the three that was brought in and was going to try and be put on our local roads which did not happen. No compareson in the one seen in the BDA Day Parade and the one that has been seen out Gorhams.

  7. I got 2 says:

I have 2 atv’s n ride them all the time! Get well soon fellaz! Maybe we can set de trend! Cause when rode responsible they are safe modes of transport!

  8. TheOne says:

i think the only thing that matters is if the person will push thru or not. Sheesh *prayers*

  9. Tired Mum says:

@I got 2. I’m afraid the evidence rather goes against you if there only three of these on the island (if ‘What Next’ is correct) and this has happened. I personally would not like to see these on our streets, and don’t feel they would add anything to our already crazy roads.

  10. underwriter says:

The M.I.F. will not take a hit as this is something that will be outright excluded from coverage. I underwrote a company that sells these things and they are meant for outback/country riding not flatter main road terrain. The tires themselves you can look at the treads and know for sure that you are asking for an accident if you think of riding on flat roads. They should only be used on a field or on places like the dirt track at SSide. No trend should be set for Bermuda as they are not as safe as you think and I pray this boy gets well. Crashing is just one of the MANY issues that this type of vehicle has including gas tank explosion due to overheating, gear jams and brake failure, and steering issues etc etc. They also have the ones for kids, power wheels, yes these are it. So parents be cautious of even buying these for your kiddies.

  11. Ron De Corner says:

ATVs are not dangerous – just the fools who ride them. I saw the one at Gorhams – only 250 cc not that powerful. Obviously a fool riding it.

  12. Not Surprised says:

ATV’s have been hear for sometime for private use. Nothing new. the one at Gorhams, with those wheels and tires compromises it’s integrity. Not what it’s built for. And I’m sorry it is not meant for the road. Irresponsible riding….really not surprised this has happened. A joy ride gone terrible wrong….smh

  13. first time says:

I left gorhams at 445 yesterday, just as a young man rode away on the atv marked sold that had been sitting outside the store. He hit the throttle and went flying over the speedbumps. I’m not sure if it was him, but seems likely. I hope the rider and passenger recover quickly and completely.

  14. Negatives says:

Wow really bermuda??? a story comes out about a young man in ICU and instead of wishing him well you decide to focus on the negatives in the story……that is kind of sad……all i can do is shake my head

    • observer says:

Well what made this story? ATV rider hits pole… Rider should not have had the ATV on the road. And 23 yrs old at that. Way pass his cut azz yrs.

  15. Ron De Corner says:

I saw the ATV outside Gorhams and it had street tyres on it so wasn’t ever meant for off road. Of course it wasn’t meant for on road either as it had no lights or other safety stuff. 250cc water cooled single cylinder. It looked quite heavy so cannot have been that powerful. But in the hands of a fool of course it would be very dangerous. Someone in these hard times obviously had loads of extra cash to waste on something he could only ever use on his driveway. Very sad – I hope for a recovery and a good lesson learned.

  16. Sigh says:

Sorry that a young boy is in ICU but come on!! Aside from not being street legal with lights etc, it was a 250cc!! Did he have a special permit to transport? Did gorhams staff check this before letting him go on it? Why would you sell an ATV (ALL TERRAIN vehicle) with street tyres?? Ridiculous!!

    • Tommy Chong says:

Young Boy!?!?! A 23 Year old is not a boy. From talking to someone who saw them purchase the ATV they didn’t even wait to get instructions from gorhams staff they just sped off after onto the road. These guys were a bunch of thug wannabes & I feel little to no sympathy for them just happy no one innocent got hurt. Like the old saying goes, “You walk like a duck, talk like a duck & quack like a duck than you are a duck.”

  17. dirty red says:

I feel that it isn’t the vehicle that is the problem. We have regular bikes on the island that shouldn’t be on the road. We have legal vehicles period with people controling them who shouldn’t the ATV isn’t a bad choice for the island its just what you do with it and if you abuse the privilege of having it on the island and in your possession. It is clear the person who had possession abused their privilege by 1 putting it on the road 2 having a passenger. I’ve seen dirt bikes on the road with dirt tires totally not legal……. You can’t blame the vehicle its the person who makes the decision. Any vehicle is dangerous its not what you do its how you do it (prayers out to the families)

  18. Bean says:

All that $$$ that ATV was going for and guys Write it off Are You SERIOUS!!! Mmmm Mmmm… The Recession isn’t hitting everybody…

  19. Sad says:

Prayers with this young man in ICU and the other young man. To his family and friends prayers for you all…. praying for a full recovery.

  20. Triangle Drifter says:

Actually ATVs such as these http://www.polarisindustries.com/en-us/polaris-defense/2012/Electric/Polaris-EV-LSV/Pages/Overview.aspx would make great vehicles for Bermuda. They are small, slow compared to cars, small engines don’t burn as much gas, & how often do you see a car being used to carry more than 2 people?

The Gorhams type is really intended as a single rider high performance ATV, not suitable for road use even with street tires.

On Elbow Cay, Bahamas, about half the size of Bermuda, most people get around in gas golf carts. Max speed of these things is 15mph. There are a few bikes like here & a few small cars. No public transport. Visitors rent golf carts.

Works for them. Could work here too.

  21. jt says:

It looked brand new – except for the fact it was totalled. Drove by before the emergency vehicles got there – didn’t see any helments around either, but could be wrong on that.

  22. Tommy Chong says:

What has happened to all the Bermuda laws that limited the types of vehicles allowed in Bermuda? OOOOH I remember now!!! We have a minister who cares more about getting licenses for his massive construction vehicles than road safety. This is what hook ups down at tcd does to our island.

  23. Triangle Drifter says:

Darwinism at its best. Thinning the herd.

  24. Common Sense says:

There is no doubt that this vehicle was both unlicensed and uninsured, and that the purchaser would have been strongly advised by Gorham’s that it was not for use on public roads. I sincerely hope that these two young men make a complete recovery, but I also sincerely hope that if it is the driver-owner who took a reckless chance on driving this vehicle on the roads then he should be required to meet the cost of his hospital stay and all medical bills. He clearly has money to burn and we, the taxpayers, should not be liable for his foolishness.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Paying for others stupidity & irresponsibility gets old real quick.

That type of an ATV is a land bound jetski. Nothing wrong with the machine as such but it does attract a certain type individual to abuse it.
